Terrible boating accident in Long Island

Status
Not open for further replies.
I think this thread is getting out of control. We're usually a peaceful group of guys here...and these accidents tear at our emotions because they effect the sport we love. I was not there...I can only come to conclusions based upon the media. I'm sorry for the loss of life (and a great boat) but the bottom line is; going too fast for conditions along with the consumption of alcohol (under investigation) is what probably caused this accident. I hope someone can prove otherwise...maybe mechanical failure...or just driver error...whatever the cause, it's a tradjic event that none of us ever want happen....

Come on JP, this thread is typical as of late! Peaceful? Not hardly!
Bash, accuse, threaten. The juvenile posts by a select few are the
reason I am just about bored enough to stop visiting this site. It seems
like some of these people are on the site around the clock and thus
their life revolves around a website?? Again, it's not the majority, it's
a few that seem to post just to post instead of actually having a
legitimate take or valid input. Also typical is that a few rotten bananas
ruin it for the whole bunch. I'm cool with a good debate but the crap
that goes on here sometimes is ridiculous junior high babble!!

Regardless of why it happened, there are people with broken hearts
from this tragedy and our thoughts and prayers for the family should
supercede the negative opinions of they with small IQ's.

This is a copy of a P/M that I sent to Chris requesting that this thread be closed.

Chris
Can you please tell these gentleman to stop posting on my threads and I promise I will do the same. How ever this got out of hand or who's fault it is -- I do not know. As the administrator I am requesting that you lock my thread ( terrible boat accident) I would love for this nonsense to stop.

Anthony, your thread started out as a good thread and an eye opener for all of us. These incidents make us more aware of how lethal a boat can be when mistakes happen. The thread should stay open for all who want to share their sympathy for the families involved and for those that may have constructive critisizem. It's only the direct attact on thread posters and name calling that we don't need at Checkmate-boats.com.......:thumb:

I'm with you Jup so maybe someone can start a thread as long as it is mine, for some reason this stuff happens and I am tired of it. I love the site, because for the most it deals with one kind of boat and there are no ego's here.:thumb:

My heart also goes out to the families of this accident. I was just checking for any updated news and I see that this thread turned into a typical thread of late. (bashing, accusing, etc.) How sad!

I used to love to get on here, but not lately. Chris just sent me a reminder for my paid subscription expiration. I must be honest, I do not think I am going to renew.

This was very tragic, being a retired firefighter ive always hated accidents. but as you were saying about your subscription Ive heard the same comment on both sides of the fence. hang in there.

You know, I'm getting tired of being a free baby sitter.

I love it when people post stuff here, on what is a free message board acting like I'm some bitch that owes the world a free web site and explanations for this and that.

Newsflash! - my patience for this crap is wearing thin!

Whatever I do, someone is bound to PM me telling me how wrong I am.

If we moderate then someone cries foul. If we don't moderate then someone cries that we should do something.

I can't flippin' win!

Last week the big deal seem to revolve around how we should allow racist crap on here - now today we have this thread.

In last week's debacle, (when people starting threatening each other with violence amongst other things), I decided to close the thread. And in closing it I more or less mentioned that I was also personally offended by the racist element of the thread as my wife "isn't white". I would have thought some might have thought a little about that.

But shortly after that, to me at least, it seemed that some here decided to subtly make their feelings known that they disagreed with what I did.

Yes, I saw the avatars with racial undertones. Can I mention that they were uploaded for free, on my dime, to the server that I pay for? How would that make you feel if you were me?

Yes, I also saw the subtle little shots that were posted.

But the bottom line is, in the end, I've gotten used to having crap shot my way no matter what I do, so most of it I just ignore.

But just to let you know, the truth is, I had about a dozen or so PM's, some from very long time members of this site, suggesting or asking me to do something about that thread. Some of the requests ranged from locking the thread, to removing it, to banning some of the people involved in it, or all of those and more.

And I relay that story to you as one example.

I don't think some of you realize that there is a silent majority here that feels much differently than some of you. It's not just me, it's a bunch of people. And many of these folks simply don't want to get involved in some big confrontation, so they make their feelings known privately.

The bottom line here, at least from where I sit, is that lately there seems to be a small group of people here, that seem to participate on this site like they have some right to entitlement. But what I wonder is, entitlement to what?

I'm sorry to point this out, but the deal here is that you have someone in me, that has worked their butt off for years to put this site together on your behalf at no cost to you. Every day I spend hours upon hours answering PM's, helping people with their accounts, administrating the site, etc. etc. etc.

But what do I owe anyone?

So perhaps a little respect once in a while for your felllow members, the site's policies and for me, might be a little nicer approach then posting crap, fighting with each other and then telling me how to fix the problems that I didn't start or cause.

drewman, Please continue to support the site. Chris does a great job and there's only been a few bad vibes throughout the history of this site. Usually they dwindle away and the site remains positive, informative and upbeat. I've been a subscriber in the past and will be again in the future (money's been tight as I was unemployed for a while)..don't let a few bad posts ruin a good home for Checkmate fans. And Chris, you have my utmost respect for running a really clean site and giving us a place to hang our hat! Steve

It is amazing I start a thread on what is a very tragic event. Why I will even dignify you stupid post with a answer is beyond me.
1 When I said I owned this boat --I meant that I owned a hustler. Not only did I own one but I happen to know the owner of global marine pretty well. At the time I was retired and lived in Miami where you boat year round and laying out that kind of coin was not only very feasable but ejoyable in that climate.
2 What B/S did I post on this site?? Pick the thread or the post just do not do it on this thread it is way to serious for your nonsense, then you can post your dopey pictures along with it.
3 Not only do I know the boat - I believe that boat in the accident. It was a 40 foot Fiore model with twin diesels. I could be wrong so I will defer to your expertise.
4 I have boated in these same waters as long as I could walk!! Do you know these waters?? Where do you live??
4 Do you know what boatssssss I own now other then my C/M??
My checkmate sits in front of my summer home where I boat about 25 to 30 hrs a year alot of coin for that time. Must I REPORT ALL THE BOATS I own at the present time to you?? This is a checkmate site is it not.
5 I will tell you what -- Do you notice I do not post on your threads at least in the last two weeks, why don't you stay off my threads as I do yours.
You are a sorry case:(
I WILL ALSO TELL YOU MY 21 IS SOLD AND I will be ordering a C/M if fact I was on the phone with Randy my dealer and Linda and Kip from the factory yeaterday but I promise before I drop anywhere between another 50 to 75k I will check with you first. What a putz!!
Check This,

Could you please clarify what your relationship to this boat is, since this seems to be the contentious issue here.

In your first post, it is not totally clear but you posted...

"Erie for me, it is a boat I use to own."

So, you are stating what?

You used to own this specific boat?

You used to own this specific model?

You used to own a Hustler?

What's the deal?

Please clarify so we can put this to rest somehow.

Actually, I really don't know how you feel. Let me know via whatever manner you are most comfortable with.

I'm trying to make things right by everyone involved.

The not so infrequent bantering, bickering and eye-poking that goes on around here tells me a few things (other than the fact that as a group we have a sense of humor and like to play).

1. We are a highly diverse, opinionated and passionate group of people who feel free to share openly.
2. By and large we are fairly tolerant of, if not in agreement with each other about some fundamental areas because we are united by the fact that we all share a love for water, speed and Checkmates in particular.

Personally, I've found myself pretty offended by some of the things that go on around here, particularly those founded in hatred but I recognize that when you hang out at what is essentially a Nascar-like forum you should probably try to not be too thin skinned when some drunk spills beer down your back.

Lately there's been too much beer spilling and not enough Nascar.
Things have started to get really mean spirited due to a few personality clashes and it's really taking away from the spirit of this forum.

I don't mean to point fingers at anyone but I am finding that at the heart of this is ego, competition and one-upsmanship. I, for one am tired of all the boastfulness.
I am equally tired of people who are so personally offended by braggarts that they take it upon themselves to knock them down a peg.

It gets tiring, stressfull and it's sad to see. I really don't care which one of you Bozo's has a bigger pecker.
So Knock it off!!! Clowns.

I thought you were requesting that as the administrator that...."I lock your thread"...?

Now you're posting updates...

-Chris
I continued the updates because and another member asked me to do so.
My Hustler was a 1999 Hustler Sling shot. I purchaced the boat in Semtember of 1999 from a broker in Fort Lauderdale. When I said it was an Erie feeling because like a Checkmate Hustler has a good family of owners to. If this accident happened with any other kind of custom boat -- even checkmate alot of people may have felt the same way. If you should need any futher information do not be afraid to ask.
At least the membership is increasing here but not the paid members.
Sim you started off with a wonderful thread then you ruined it by putting your self on our level with the Bozo's clown remark. So what makes you different then us??

I appreciate the clarification.

So if what you say is true, then I can appreciate why you got testy over having your integrity questioned.

However....

All members, yourself included, need to respond in appropriate, measured and reasonable ways to one another. And I don't believe you have done that on a number of occasions here since your arrival. If you have indeed been trying to do that, then I will say to you, that it is certainly not coming across that way, or coming through that way in your posts on many occasions.

And because of that, you have now gotten under the skin of a number of members here, which is evidenced by some of the responses seen in this thread and others. Hopefully you would agree, that the escalation of that situation, from a common sense point of view, simply can't bode well for your future enjoyment of the site - nor for enjoyment of the other members of the site either.

So what I would therefore ask you to do in the future, is to cut your fellow members here some slack, before you pull out your "keyboard cannon" and let it rip. I've seen you do that on a few too many occasions now and that's part of the problem here in this thread, I believe.

I guess some would call it overkill but I just sum it up like this...

You don't need a AK-47 to go duck hunting....

Know what I mean?

Regards,

-Chris

There have been similar accidents at night where I boat at Lake Havasu. People driving their Boats going 100 MPH at night, one guy hit the bridge pillar and killed himself and 3 others, Another hit the rocks in the bend of the river he never made the turn killed one. And many more during the day and night.
All put their life in the hands of the driver as these passengers did. 1st rule of boating is the safety of your passengers come first. Going a 100 mph at night is not considering or having any regard to their safety. 100 mph is not safe during the day if conditions aren't right. Perfect example, Steve Coulobe Owner of HTM boats killed him self and 3-others aboard in a 30' HTM when he flipped his boat during the day on Lake Castaic. In excess of 100 MPH on a lake that enforces a 35 MPH speed limit. If my memory serves me right it was about 6 1/2 years ago. That incident started nation wide controversy on boat safety of high performance boats.
I give my sympathy to the victims and their families.
