Terrible boating accident in Long Island

I hate to here of any boating accidents. It sounded by the article that the driver was driving very fast at night in a tricky shallow area. To take a forty foot boat and stick it 100 yards from the water line and throw seven people out of the boat means he was flying.

He was flying and being wreckless to say the least. With the arguements that are being made for speed limits and the overall bad sentiment for performance boaters it is accidents like this that make all in the performance boat field suffer.
As much as I feel terrible about this accident I have to believe that the operator of this boat was either over confident of his knowledge of this waterway or the other that causes most accidents boat or not.

Sounds like a case of too much money, too little brains, a lack of respect for speed at night, and trying to show off to the 3 couples on board:irked:. I hate to hear about these accidents...the next thing you know somebody will be tring to sue Global Marine for building the boat!! Prayers for all the families involved!!

Wow - some conclusion jumping going on here huh?

I guarantee you there was no showing off.

I'm not jumping to conclusions, but with everything I've read on S&F, Offshore Only and the released news articles; going way to fast for conditions played an obvious role in this accident. Driving fast at night in a narrow waterway spells disaster...

We all have are opinions I just feel sorry for the passengers. I would really like to here your side of the story'

Throwing 7 people out of a 40 foot boat at night while driving threw a tricky shallow area and launching the boat 100 yards from the water line sounds very reckless to me.

i agree, but we weren't there.... hopefully reaper can shine some light on it, cause it sounds like he has first hand knowlege of the events and how they unraveled..

Gotta say i have the same take on it, its not rocket science......Go ahead reaper what happened?

I grew up in East Rockaway (where they towed the boat to police impound) and used to boat around where our Hustler friend got in trouble. Speaking from personal experience the area can be pretty tricky. Can't even tell you how many times we got into trouble in those waters.
Thank G-d we had a healthy respect for the water and didn't have a 100 mph boat or I might not be writing this right now.

I have boated on the South Shore of NYC and Long Island my whole life, my brother and Dad still boat there today, to say you have to be cautious is an overstatement as you should in all waterways. Two things that happened here is why I think along with the sympathies there have been some negitive responses. First of all this accident happened at 7;30 pm, now I dont care who you are or how long you have been navigating the same waters, once the sun goes down and it is pitch black out. For this reason alone you should show extra caution. Number 2 the people in this boat were thrown up to 150 feet, guy's, this person, this boat was flying. Anyone who travels at those speeds at night no matter what the waterway has no regard for himself never mind the passengers he is responsible for. We all grieve the loss of life but the operator of this boat may he rest in peace but he made a terrible mistake.:(
I would love to hear from the Reaper if he is from the area. Maybe he can enlighten us on something all of us have not heard concerning this whole tragedy.

Sim -I live in well my parents live in the rockaways. I don't believe because you know those water would you ever dare to go any kind of speed at that time of night unless it was sumertime and the sun was still up.

my prayers go out to the lives lost!!!!!

BUT how do you know it was your boat? and if it was then what was it, year, power, ect.....

not trying to rob this awefull thread but you have posted some b*llchit on this site and wanna clear this up.....;)
what speeds did it run when you owned it also?

sorry "check this" but i wonder why you would own a 40' "offshore" boat or a hustler and downsize to a 21' pulasare:eyecrazy:

again my heart goes out to the families of the lives that were lost again!!!!!!!!!

No matter what our opinions on speed vs proper care and attention while driving, this is tragic. I hope the families of these individuals are able to support each other as they deal with their loss.

Ross, I hope this thread does not turn into another verbal battle between Mate owners.:brickwall: please stop poke'n Check. It's no fun watching you guys fight in these forms. I don't know anyone here, except by these forms but I hope I could get along with you all if I was able to meet you.

I can't help it, I was wondering how fast the poor driver might have been going to put the boat 100yds into the marsh. I'm thinking that 40 footer is a lot of kinetic energy to stop, and around 30mph should to do the trick?

Rob

It was close to if not a full moon too. I love boating under a full moon, but this just sounds like a fatal momentary lapse of judgement. Can't say it couldn't happen to me, but I hope not.

RIP to the victims and the families. :(

It is amazing I start a thread on what is a very tragic event. Why I will even dignify you stupid post with a answer is beyond me.
1 When I said I owned this boat --I meant that I owned a hustler. Not only did I own one but I happen to know the owner of global marine pretty well. At the time I was retired and lived in Miami where you boat year round and laying out that kind of coin was not only very feasable but ejoyable in that climate.
2 What B/S did I post on this site?? Pick the thread or the post just do not do it on this thread it is way to serious for your nonsense, then you can post your dopey pictures along with it.
3 Not only do I know the boat - I believe that boat in the accident. It was a 40 foot Fiore model with twin diesels. I could be wrong so I will defer to your expertise.
4 I have boated in these same waters as long as I could walk!! Do you know these waters?? Where do you live??
4 Do you know what boatssssss I own now other then my C/M??
My checkmate sits in front of my summer home where I boat about 25 to 30 hrs a year alot of coin for that time. Must I REPORT ALL THE BOATS I own at the present time to you?? This is a checkmate site is it not.
5 I will tell you what -- Do you notice I do not post on your threads at least in the last two weeks, why don't you stay off my threads as I do yours.
You are a sorry case:(
I WILL ALSO TELL YOU MY 21 IS SOLD AND I will be ordering a C/M if fact I was on the phone with Randy my dealer and Linda and Kip from the factory yeaterday but I promise before I drop anywhere between another 50 to 75k I will check with you first. What a putz!!

No, you thought that you were going to trap me in someway shape or form. I do not have to prove anything to the likes of someone like you.

Wow, did you ever think that just maybe there might be a few on this site. People who have worked hard and done well for themselves. Did you ever say to yourself that people who maybe have a few bucks do not run to spend it on the most expensive boat. Maybe thier priorties are putting a child thru college and raising a couple of other children. I feel sorry for you. What a bitter person you are and to bring your nonsense up again on a thread like this. Shame on you.

When I buy another boat I will be sure to report to the site investigator (you)

I'M OUT.....

Thank you the first thing you have said that makes any sense at all.

I think this thread is getting out of control. We're usually a peaceful group of guys here...and these accidents tear at our emotions because they effect the sport we love. I was not there...I can only come to conclusions based upon the media. I'm sorry for the loss of life (and a great boat) but the bottom line is; going too fast for conditions along with the consumption of alcohol (under investigation) is what probably caused this accident. I hope someone can prove otherwise...maybe mechanical failure...or just driver error...whatever the cause, it's a tradjic event that none of us ever want happen....
