Ummm..... (Coughs)too late...

Depends on what I can find. Been trying to find a 300XS under $10k....225HP will be smallest I'll go though. I know I'll run a trophy + for one of my props though!

um well 300 wow, are you trying to see if you can make light speed :rof:
I thought you could only go with 250 max on the Starflites???

No, some starflites and starliners had the 250hp plates on them cause they ran out of 300hp plates or something. The factory will send you a 300hp plate if you call them, they are rated for it. I have incurable need for speed... 300XS would be awesome! Might settle for a 225 this year though. Still looking.... prob only get 85ish with a 300, high 70's maybe 80 with 250....75 w/225. What's going on yours?

I like the way you think...go big or go home:bigthumb:

Someone did last year. He is or at least was a regular here but I can't remember who it was. He redid the bottom and added a pad. He finished it near the end of the summer and didn't really have a chance to gather much data as far as MPH improvement. I would love to do something like that to mine but hopefully I'll never have to tear into the bottom of it. :)

As far as go big or go home, I doubt anyone has ever said "I really wish I put a 250XS on instead of a 300XS.

John

OPSDAVE added a pad when he redid his starflite... I'm going to look it over, see if I might want to do it as well, but don't know if it's worth the extra work.

If gas keeps going up, I might just put a 50hp 4 stroke on it!

Forget that, electric trolling motor for the win! :)

I would bet that either of those XS powerplants are better on fuel than my old 200
OMC. Better than a old 200 Merc I'd bet too.

Question, what gel can I use to roll on inside without a primer and will adhere to the epoxy?

Not a restorer just try and read a lot of these great threads.

I was under the impression that if one uses Epoxy you can't use gelcoat. And I thought that gelcoat was poly based.

This is off of http://www.uscomposites.com/faq_epoxy.html

27. Can I put polyester gelcoat or polyester resin over epoxy?

There are conflicting opinions on this subject. We DO NOT recommend applying a polyester gelcoat over epoxy. The polyester based resins/gelcoats do not offer great bonding strength to the epoxy. Instead of gelcoat or polyester we recommend using an epoxy or urethane based primer and paint to finish your epoxy made part. Some industry leaders for these type of finishes include Interlux, Pettit and AwlGrip.

"conflicting" :eyecrazy:

Yeah, I'm probably going to use an epoxy instead of gel on the inside. I still want to gel coat the boat even though I used epoxy for repair areas. Duratec makes some good products that are supposed to work very well and give you the option to put poly over epoxy with a good primer.

What it came with a 81 225 blackmax, its a good starting point, next winter I will overhaul it and SOUP it up, outboard are so expensive, oh and what is this pad everyone is talking about? is it like a keel protector or something?

The "pad" is a flat spot on the bottom of the hull. The newer Pulsare's have a 6" pad, vs the flites true V bottom. If you can drive em and have the power, you can get up on the pad and fly... less boat in water/wetted hull = faster.

Josh,

When I first got my Starflite I had only 2 weeks to get it ready for my vacation. That meant replacing the bad floor with a temporary one. Also the bottom of the hull had several deep gouges in the bottom that I epoxied with thickened West System to keep water away from the exposed glass. When I prepped the hull for the resto I removed all the epoxy I had applied, made resin/glass repairs and finished with marine grade putty before applying my gel. I was instructed not to apply the gel over epoxy. No evidence that it would not stick, but caution was expressed strongly.

Badbk I'm just wondering how many layers of fiber glass did you use on the outside of your transom before the knees and stringer

Only one is the simple answer. I coated the transom in 60/40 resin/acetone mix, let that dry, then glassed it in one complete layer on each side. Putting it in, I had a layer of glass on the outer transom skin w/cab mix between it and the transom. Tabbed it in with 3 overlapping layers. With the stringers/floor it has probably another 2-3 layers of complete coverage tying everything in. Solid. Ready for a 300xs if I can find one! I used a lot of cabosil to filet all the edges giving the fiberglass better angles to properly adhere w/no bubbles.

Slowly but surely... floor is now in too.

I doubled up the knees to make them 1.5" also. Transom/knees/floor tied in is solid as a rock.

Still have a bit more glassing to do in a few spots, but just about done glassing floor/transom areas. Yay!

To date I have used 8 gallons of resin, holy crap! That's with the new lipless splashwell work, coating all wood with a 60/40 mix of resin/acetone - then en capsuling with glass. Stringers, flooring, transom, you name it, ain't no water getting in anywhere!

I still have to do my custom molded windscreen.. ugh. I am also filling all the old rubrail/screw holes, looks like swiss cheese! I'll be ordering some poly resin to do that with because of my gel coating plans, plus it doesn't need the strength the floor/transom does.

After I get my poly and plug the bottom half screw holes I'll be flipping it and getting the bottom ready for gel coating along with refurbing the trailer. Hope to flip this week.
