A little help if you have a minute..

I am going to go out on a limb here.. I have been called rude, arrogant and a few other things before, so what the hell. I think this guy is full of B.S. He posted in #27 on 5/16 that he just ordered the engine from Mercury. Then in post # 33 on 5/18 , not only did the engine get delivered from Mercury, but was installed and running. All this in just 2 days. Took me longer than that to get a T-Shirt delivered from Merc. Unless the engine was delivered next day service or picked up from Mercury, how is this possible? Getting it delivered in that time would be next to impossible, let alone the installation. Dont forget about switching from big block to small block. Then we never heard from him again.

If I am wrong, I will be very surprised and I owe this guy an apology.

I don't know what planet your marina guys are on...not this one I don't think, you are talking about having to change everything !!! all of your acc. mounts, exhaust, engine mounts..all differnt....and yes you can buy a brand new 454 marine engine right now.....just bought 2 !!!! Rob
 
OK, it's been years now so the motor has had time to break in and I really want to know what the numbers are on the GPS. Please.
 
I did some research and this is what I found. The guy is selling the boat at the present moment and he posted some numbers. I copied and pasted from his ad thread. Need to reprop..low 50's @ 4200 now with the small block.


So guys for ****s and giggles can the numbers he posted be improved on with prop or exhaust improvements?

Remove prop from small block and put onto big block, and walah, 63 mph.
Probably, maybe freshen up that eight year old tank of fuel too, heh heh.

True but I'm convinced the 383 propped correctly will come within a mph or 2 of that boat anchor stock 454 that was previously in it. I'm not partial to either BB or SB but I will say that the stock 454 was and still is a joke and the punch line would be a SB powering the same boat keeping up with that 454 all day long.:D
 
And now, from a bit of scripture, "From the 'Book Of Jim', Chapter on 'High Speed, Low Drag', and I quote, "There is no replacement for displacement".

On the lighter side, our old friend and petroleum genius 'The Flame' has a 383 ish small block in that old Donzi of his and it hasn't come apart yet. On the other hand though, he also has that boat anchor 427 in an ancient Impala SS that Mrs. Jim used to spank the Nuclear Honda crowd around here. Come to think of it, it's nearly Christmas, and that very car should be back in my garage for it's annual tune up and leg stretch, while the Flame takes his vacation down in Old Mex. This year the Boy Racers have been spouting the praises of a small (displacement) Japanese made all wheel drive wonder. They do become rather quiet when I remind them of a certain past loss that they suffered at the hands of a high heeled driver of a certain old boat anchor powered Chevy.

Very interesting Jim I have to say but comparing a 4 banger with a 427 is like comparing apples to oranges. I will say I've had my fare share of both 358 and BB dirt modified' and I've been to a 100 lap feature on a 1/2 mile track watch a guy with his 358 come from mid pack against all BB's finish 4th. Now the only reason he ran the 358 was due to mechanical issues with his BB car but needed to run the race for the points. I believe he surprised quite a few people that night including himself. I know everyone loves their BB' and I know the saying no replacement for displacement but I'm afraid in SOME cases the "Mighty Mouse" will run with the "Rat".:bigthumb:
 
Shortbus, I know you are new around here. We generally enjoy the wordsmithing and story telling of Jim in a more passive manner, where the read is the pleasure. You have done no wrong...just enjoy the ride.:)

I enjoyed his story and yes I'm new to this forum and new to Checkmate boats. I have no doubts that there are a great group of folks on here and look forward to learning quite a bit. :cheers:
 
I don't know, concerning apples and oranges, they are both round, the same size, colored, grow from a tree, can be peeled, can be eaten, turned into a drink, or dehydrated, or so it goes. They seem pretty similar to me. I would agree on the (small) 4 cyl vs (BIG) v8 thing. In point of fact, I struggled to get that very point across to the speed racers in my neighborhood, especially after their glorious leader condemed the 'boat anchor' engine in the old Impala that I look after when a good friend of mine goes on vacation south of the border (he has a life long love affair with the machine and never lets it get too far away from him). I guess you kind of had to be there, but the racer x crowd actually thought that the engine needed a tune up as it sat there loping away. I Quietly, but firmly, voiced my opinion on the theory of displacement. They eagerly extolled the virtues of the small high revving turbo charged, variable valve timed, multi cammed, injected, NOS'ed, little beast that they sport around in. I smiled a smile born of years of experience, and with malice aforethought, I suggested a small contest of acceleration might settle the question. They agreed and stipulated that there should be some money involved. I had fleeting visions of Benjamins in my head. Unfortunatly, I was caught red handed, so to speak, right at the starting line (Mrs Jim was supposed to be Christmas shopping, but turns up out of nowhere). she mentioned that it might go less than satisfactory, for me, if I continued with the race but actually took over the driving duties when some mention of age was brought up by Mr boy racer. I think you might not be surprised to learn that she was first across the line, well over the 120 mph mark. She grabbed the prize money too. This year, it looks like the engine size has increased and I'm hearing statements containing terms like water boxer, NOS, turbo, wastgate, all wheel drive, and such. My money is on a 53 year old vehicle with a big block nestled under the hood. I might mention that it is chained down tight to keep it in place when in combat.
 
Oh yeah, I should also mention that We just nursed her all the way from Seattle down to here, with no overdrive. We used side streets and the old highway to keep speeds down. The Flame (The guy that owns the car ) (he works in the petroleum field as a chemist type) has already called three times to check on his baby. I haven't even been underneath the car yet. I wonder what Fuel knows about Gear Vendors Overdrives?
 
Oh happy day. I crawled underneath and quickly found a loose connector at the overdrive solenoid. Not really sure how/why it came off but she's a workin again. Of course I immediately checked in with the nervous owner of the car. He is much relieved. The opponent is a Subaru sedan. It says wrx on the back. It doesn't seem to be a slouch. Sounds funny, almost like it has a miss, but goes like a scalded rabbit. Negotiations on lane choice and day and time are underway.
