Roll and Tip method using interlux Brightside paint

just to give you a heads up you may not want to wet sand by hand and buff, i painted my check the same red, i started hand sanding with 2000 and couldn't get the shine and color back. i bought this kit from 3m that goes on a da and is 3000 grit but kind of spongy. if i get over to the shop i will get the kit name and part #. it was the only thing that saved me from having to paint all over again.

this is what i used to finish to get my paint smooth with out a haze and shiny. you might want to try it. i bought a trizac kit with a couple of different types and different grits. it came with the adapter for my da and everything you could need. only thing was it was a promotional deal.

Thanks for the info, can you go into more detail of what you had to do? I got the shine to come back but I worked my azz off.:(

i didn't wet sand my whole boat, only where i had a couple of dry spots. where i really needed to cut i used an 800 foam trizac and wet sanded right before the finish was perfect, then i put the 3000 foam trizac pad and wet sanded it to my finish. with the trizac kit you don't need to hand sand anymore. if you have a body and paint store somewhere near you stop in and ask about a 3m trizac kit. it comes with 240, 400, 600, 800, 1000,and 1200 wet sanding papers for your da, it also comes with 800 and 3000 foam sanding pads. it comes with the adapter to mount it on your da and a soft pad for non flat areas. i will look and see if i have the part # somewhere. it takes alot of arm work out of it and gives you ten times better finish. i watched a guy use it on a black polyurethane finish with no clear. the finish was destroyed when he first got it. when he was done it looked like it was sprayed to a perfect flat finish. he only made about 3 or 4 passes with the buffer.

also, if your boat looks as good as your pics, my hats off to you, i tried rolling and tipping and it looked terrible, no where near as nice as yours. boat really looks good. good choice of color.

I've got a few screw ups that I need to repair but overall it looks just like the pictures in person. Thanks!!!

looks like ill have to try that trizac stuff.... not quite getting the finish I want painting, the hull so sun damaged, i sanded my arse off and still got rough patches even with using 3 coats of epox primer, sanding between every coat, but black makes it jump out, grrrrr... i think some wet sanding and elbow grease, and the trizac kit i can get it to look pretty decent.....

The trizac papers work great. I buy them in 12" diameter for my big random orbit polisher that I use on the Corian. It can bring the Corian up to a mirror finish. For small tops I buy the 6" disc's.

Wonderful stuff. You MUST use plenty of water with trizacs. If they get dry they will burn the surface rather than polish it.

When I used the epoxy primer, I was told to apply 2 or 3 coats within an hour of each other and then there was no sanding between coats for a higher buildup. You are removing too much of the primer by sanding between each coat and loosing too much time with the painting process.

Brian, time to chime in here if you have used the epoxy type primer. You
will have better info than I.

I remember learning on the real stuff, DP40!!! It had lead in it so the EPA (cack suckas ) said for some reason lead is bad for us so they came out with this garbage stuff DP40LF (lead free).
On to subject. I apply 3 wet coats and block sand with 220-320 then top coat with 2K primer, block that and primer again wet sanding it to paint. Most of the time I just use the 2K primer then seal it before painting. Its all in what your going over and every application is different.

As for sanding between coats, to each their own. By doing 3 coats then sanding, there is more material to work with at one time.

by looking at that picture your finish came out great. i don't mind a little orange peal, it doesn't have to be perfectly flat. that looks great, i sprayed my boat and it looks as good as yours. excellent job and congrats.
