Got the itch to grind on something...

Instigator

Well-known member
Haven't even started the 3.3 hydrid (FrankenRude III) on the Starliner and already have the itch for something new (Frank IV?).

Just started collecting parts but have a couple cool pieces that basically no longer exist.

Going old (-er) school on this one and been wanting to for a while.
All that know me know that all I mess with are white motors. (why not?)

I am liking more and more, the older era looper cowlings ('86' - 92) and will go w/that "look"on this one.
Not sure what block yet. 3.3 again.....?

Here's some of the unobtanium pieces I've already collected.

The lower unit is a very, very rare (only seen one other in person) Second Effort Hi Perf gear case. It has low water p/u's (never from the factory) and
it's not a nose cone.
The skeg is also 3 times the size of a stocker.

The intake is at least as rare. It does two things better than the stocker.
#1. It eliminates 95% of the BS bends, turns, curves going from the reeds to the rod slots.
Open a reed on this intake and you're looking at a rod cap!

#2. It uses two barrel cross flow carbs instead of the stock 1 barrel plastic carbs. I did the algebra and I think it equates to approx. 70% more venture area
So, six two barrels.

Also just bought (was due today but weather delayed it) an also very rare, Second Effort lightweight fiberglass cowling.

I'll cut down a factory 20" mid section and build it into a shorty.

Really had no vision (my driving force) on hulls other than thinking another Allison as I am a V bottom fan at heart.
Until writing this post......

Sticking w/old school, how about a '70's vintage 18/19' Checkmate w/string steer??
Could do it up old school like one of their old marathon race boats.
Can make 300 HP's blind folded and set up right that'd probably be good for low/mid '90's in a hull like that.

That, might be fun ;)

If there's interest, I'll post up updates on this thread.

Let me know what you think guys.

I go way for years and come back to see you are still building frankinrude. I remember the 1st one. This is going to be good.

Cool, thanks guys.
We'll have some fun then.

One of the great things about the JohnRudes is they are dirt cheap and easy/cheap to make big power with.
And on a heavy boat, nothing has the same torque.

Here's today care package.
About 9 lbs.

Now we start the search for a donor motor.

Likely end up being a couple different ones combined.
Kinda leaning towards the 3.3 liters just to get the free grunt.

The Pre '93 motors (3.0 and 2.7) had slower trim and can be retrofitted to the older era but think what would be better is to graft my older era cowling and lower pans to a '93 and up mid.

We shall see.

One thing for sure, way more to choose from in Fla than up here.
The good is the lack of salt up here so no bitching allowed.

Hey Gary sounds like a cool build. Finally got my 89' 225 down to a bare block. Fixing to grind on it. Any majic numbers would be appreciated. is your 2stokesonly website down Can't find it and I didn't take notes.

Excellent.

Yeah, I cancelled the site. Got tired of paying to give out free information.

On yours, gut the air box (re-jet of course), install 2.7 liter heads, widen the exhaust ports as far as you can go until you hit aluminum, raise them to 1.650" bellow deck surface, use the later era ('93 and up) head gaskets as they're .007" thinner and screw it together.
Done right you'll have 300 HP's and 7000 RPM for the price of a set of 2.5 pistons ;)

I'd add finger ports if your budget can support it. Figure $100. per hole and either new pistons or you'll have to drill yours.

If you're raising the motor (to take advantage of what you just built) you'll also want pin your prop shaft carrier.

Thanks for the info. I will let you know how it comes together. May try to squeeze in the finger ports, it looks like it will need bored.

Remember too, you can sub a '93+ block and get the finger ports for free.
Draw back is the exhaust runners are smaller internally but after running my 3.3 EFI (Frank II) I sure didn't notice it ;)

Everything on yours will bolt up. The trim is also 3 times the speed of yours.
That can also be grafted onto your mid though.

I looked at cutting up the one of the Starliner but it was too clean and worth too much.
It left for Michigan yesterday anyhow.

I thought about that but trying to find one close is like a needle in a haystack.

Normally, I buy complete, popped motors. Keep what you want, peddle the rest and end up w/your parts for free.

Was a really clean, complete '99 225 HO in Ky last fall for I think $1500.
Ports are already a 1/4" wider in those.

Another late Christmas delivery.

Thanks for the info. This will widen my search. I wasn't looking past 99' and 2000. What is the last year on motors that interchange. I picked up another crank with rods and Pistons off SnF. Mine had 3 bad journals where the rod sides groved the crank.

That was just a FYI for yah.

That'd give you 3.3 liters but would take some creative grinding/cutting to make it work.
If the crank was good, you could screw it into your parts, drop on the power head and get the newer gear case and trim.
Would also give you finger ports.

The yrs limits were different between Johnson and Evinrude.
I think Evin. went DI in '99 and Johnson never did. They cancelled that line before ever going DI.

Would have to verify everything though cuz a couple early of the early yrs of DI 200's were 2.6 liters then to 3.0's before going to 3.3's.

Just to keep us honest.

and I think the only other cool thing I have left is a pair of factory 8500 rpm boxes for the early ignition
