1975 V-Mate II Restore

Here are some pictures of old props that came with the V-Mate. One is a 25 pitch bronze three blade and the other is a damaged 19 pitch aluminum three blade. The other two props are 17 and 21 pitch aluminum three bladed which are currently on the motors.

I removed some more rotted core while standing on my head today. It has to be the best thing to do when not watching football...NOT! Anyways, it had to be done and here are some pictures of the core removed and hopefully I will have it replaced later this week.

I can see where that would be a little tight . Im so glad mine is a open bow lol . But just think of the finished project & the day you get to launch her for the 1st time. Your doing great and you've came along way from that day you brought her home . :thumb:

glad you posted the pics of the clamps in action; lost all mine and couldn't post on my blog. those things can pinch the snot out of ya!

your resto thread is well done; read thru the whole thing and is inspiring. Makes me want to pull my Enforcer out in spite of the rain and cold weather:thumb:

I got lucky, mine was nice and solid under the dash and forward. Thank god! Doing a floor up front was enough of a beotch with the sanding of the fiberglass!

Thanks for the compliments. Maybe I should re-read my thread so I can get motivated again. After the holidays I will get cracking on it again.

I don't know...I haven't worked on it for sometime now. I can get my garage heated up to 80 degrees but I like to have things hotter when glassing. I'll have this boat on the water by summer's end!!!

Have you started making any seats yet? If not, be sure to let me know when you plan to start that so I can come up to help and learn.

I haven't yet . it won't be till it warms up more so I can get to mine . or unless I figure something else out before hand . but I will let you know soon as I come up with something

Okay, my apologies for not working on my boat as of late. I will be pulling it out within the next few weeks hopefully so I can get back at it. I still need to order some more glassing materials from Mertons or US Composites. Since I'm going to be doing some cosmetics like rebuilding my spashwell and patching the dash, I'll be switching over to poly resin. I'll finish up the core repair and inner hull glassing with epoxy so hopefully everything that I've planned in my head works out.

For a little motivation today, I decided to hit a Mercury dealer to see about some supplies and end up purchasing way more then I probably needed. I went ahead and bought some gear lube, storage seal, lots of 2 stroke oil, a waterpump kit and a carb kit. I was surprised they even had the kits in stock. The goal is to start the (newer) motor to see what I have and replace what's necessary. What ever I don't use will be used for the other motor. All in all a pretty productive day for the mechanical side of things.

The weather has been getting warmer and I'm getting my motivation going again. I ordered some fiberglassing materials last Friday from U.S. Composites to finish up the last of the core repair. I also ordered poly resin which I haven't worked much with but it will be exciting. I bought some CSM and Woven Roven to rebuild the spashwell, fabricate a solid fiberglass windshield and to patch unwanted holes such as in the dash and around inside the interior.

Shopping list was:
3 gallons of epoxy
2 gallons of poly
2 containers of cabosil
1 container of 3M Glass bubbles
3 yards of WR
9 yards of CSM

Also, I've been tinkering with the old outboard and I think I'm going to try and get it started later this week. I'll keep everyone posted on how that goes and hope to report back with good news.

Additionally, I think my wife and I have decided on the color scheme of the boat (for now). It's a secret right now but it will be painted with Imron and the base color will be white.

Sounds awesome, cant wait to see it. Im keeping close eye on you since I'll be doing my V-Mate1 and there is so much useful information here. I have been out with it a few times now working the bugs out. Had a cylinder way down on compression but some seafoam and mystery oil and its up to the point it actually runs on that cylinder now..Going to try to run down to the hydo bowl (Eastwood Lake) here in the next week or so and run it a bit.

Be sure to let me know when you do your run. If you like, I could meet you over there to check your boat out. You're also more then welcome to swing by to see mine and what you will be looking forward to. I'm in Union/Englewood area.

Your not really that far from me at all then, My daughter works at Jacks in Englewood. Right now its just a matter of checking over the hull better because I am still getting water somewhere and I cant figure out where. There are no visible cracks or anything noticable. The motor is just so so, I was running it on muffs tonight and finaly got it running to where its actually firing on all 3 cylinders. Old used boats are a pain but I just know it will be worth it in the end...

I pulled the motor out today with great anticipation for a positive outcome. I pumped the bulb and gas came gushing out of the middle carb. After wiping up all the gas, I decided to go ahead and turn it over to no avail. The starter just spins but doesn't engage the flywheel? The motor isn't frozen as I can turn the flywheel and it did turn over last year when I bought it.

The wires to what I think is the stator seem to be in terrible condition. I did my best to tape those wires but will probably need replaced.

Update: Now I just get a click when I turn the key and the battery is charged?

I was able to get the starter to work again and it's engaging the flywheel. Got it to crank over but not firing. Gas is just coming out of the carbs when I pump the bulb so I don't think that's a good sign. At least I can do a compression test now.
