1977 Mercury 1500 (150hp) lags in speed

I have a 1977 17' V Mate with a 1977 Merc 150hp that won't run very fast. It's used to running speeds on the boat at 63mph. Now it takes off like a raped ape then slows down by itself to about 35mph and 4,000RPM at full throttle. I have replaced the fuel line, cleaned the fuel filter on the engine, cleaned out the bowls in each carb (3. The engine appears to be running fine. Not blowing smoke, not sputtering, starts right up, running on all cylinders. I can't figure it out. Any ideas are definately welcomed. Thank you.

What prop are you running? as far as the engine inline six cylinders have rotary reeds on the crank case #1-3-5 run leaner than the other cylinders. check your plugs to make shure the engine is getting enough fuel. a lean engine will blow up. and run great. even with a plugged carb. the plugs should be a nice chocolate color.

Sounds like something I've heard before, but I'm not sure what. illMATTic on here had some sort of problem that ended up being a clogged screen in the fuel pickup system in the tank. That may explain it all because it runs hard while there's fuel in the bowls but dies when it needs to draw from the tank.
