251 prop help

Jammaster,
Still my advice is the same. Exception of adding something to the bootom of your boat. sorry that its the only thing I had wrong.
MkHammer

im just tring to help here. my 251 with trim ALL the way down with help of tabs, still had a slite porpuse. and with them up at wot it was worse. yes you are correct the 259, 270 , etc. only do it at 30-45 mph. wot they were fine.i tred all kinds of different props, 4 blade hydromotive, spinelli, old mach props, rev.4, and bravo's by no doubt the bravo is the best over all. im running a 26 bravo and around 5800 rpms. and depending how many people are on the boat a 28 pitched to a 29 at 5200 rpms. just got this prop 2 months ago. before that i ran the 26 for 4 years. my motor was built for it. also i run a stock bravo one drive with an upgraded prop shaft. and NEVER had any issues with. i inspect it ever other year and put syn. oil in it every year. this is just my $.02 of what i did, along with 6 other guys. and that was me on the other thread about the bead of silicone on the bottom. and what i did there, CAME STRAIGHT FROM BILL COMBS MOUTH HIMSELF 5 years ago!my buddy and i just improved on it. i can guarantee that tring different props on jammaster's 251 will not help the porpuse. been there done that. although the best prop for him would be a bravo 4 blade, probablly a 26. again just my $.02. and jammaster dont know if you have trim tabs or not, but if you dont, would you rather spend 1300.00-2000.00 or about $40.00, again just tring to help here. oh. and by the way my buddies have been dealing with for awhile now and they called checkmate after doug took over and they told him to put 300 pound of bagged sand in the nose and it will fix the problem. every one has their own opinion on this matter, which is fine, but this is the only thing that helped me, and others, and we thought we would share our findings and help others out.

It's a depressing thought to have to add silicone or some type of wedges under your boat or sand bages to your mate to make it ride right. I would consider a balast tank never sand bags. No matter who said it.

i agree 100%, but that is what they told us. ive been around checks my whole life, ive owned 4 of them and my family and friends have owned god only knows how many. and most of them have had this problem. I love checkmate, but my only thought is that if they have known about this issue, ( obviouslly have) instead of saying, put silicone on it, or put sand bags in the nose why havent they fixed the problem for good. i dont know if its a hull issue or if its a weight distribution issue,. and my buddy and i took it apon ourselves and fixed the problem.and why someone would actually listen, and add 300 pounds to their boat, is beyond me. bill combs told me that he used to do the silicone thing back in the day when he raced.

Sent you some pics of the spinelli prop I mentioned earlier. It's a 27 pitch (sorry if I mistook and said 28 before??). My understanding is that it was a custom prop made for a 25 or so convincor some years ago. the guy I got it from gave up and sold his boat after someone he knew had a bad accident (stuffed it hard, I think someone(s) died) and was getting rid of odds and ends from his garage. I don't have anything right now that I have any use for it. I also just changed gear ratios and am setting up a shorter drive with a taller gear than I have now so need to get some props to try in the 24-26 or so inch pitch range. I might be interested in a trade for a hydromotive (they run great shallow I ran a 24 yesterday on the old drive with the twller ratio upper on it. It's not going to be enough - especially if I pick up some rpms when I swap to the shorter drive)...

rambling aside, If there's a good chance it'll work and you would want it, I'd be inclined to ship it to you and let you try it. It's not doing any good gathering dust with mess of props I've somehow accumulated

Thanks tim I would love to trade but that hydro is my dads 100% perfect speed prop for his check that im loaning. He wouldnt sell it for anything. I would buy the spinelli for the right price. Tho I think i am gonna listen to mk and buy his 26 bravo when its up. for sale.......... boating in upstate ny is going fast so I prob will not know the outcome of this until spring.

And the convincor porpus has to be weight problem. I mean every pic of one in the water looks like the back is gonna sink or there is 3 big block chevys in it :surf:

no worries on my end. If I decide I need to clean house I can easily sell around here or even online if need be. ..and I won't have any prob finding hydromotives (or anything else for that matter). for very reasonable prices, etc... there were at least another half a dozen or so with the 24 I picked up last week. They've come stock on a lot of Fountains, etc...

Bravo props are great props - especially the merc labbed version (s). Look forward to hearing how it goes...

Throttleherapy I hear you , Sounds like the 251 has its own characteristics, And you know a prop make a huge difference the way any boat reacts. The right prop will help alot, I'm not saying it will cure everthing. I just have my own views on how to make changes.

agreed! i MIGHT have a brand new 26 pitch hydromotive for sale if anyone is interested. i used it ounce on my 251 and i blew it out getting on plane, and around turns, but it did lift the rear of the boat. just not sure if i want to sell it. my buddy wants to try it on his 270. but let me know if anyone interested and i will let you know.

jammaster, that is the characteristic of the boat my lays to the left. its a 89" beam, and with torque of the prop, it does lay to one side alittle at lower speeds., and if you bump the throttle up alittle and trim it just alittle it goes away. and actually my best top end speed was with the 26 hydro. 4 blade, but i didnt want to sacrifice my planing and turning with the blowing out. it ran 79.8 on gps. and to be honest with you i dont remember the rpm with that prop. but the best all around prop for me is the 26 bravo one. but i have not yet tried a stock 28 bravo one which i think will be a good prop for me, speed and rpm.

The reason a Checkmate does porpus is because its tring to get up on the pad and falls off. This is really a good thing for speed. If you ride along side a Checkmate when it does it you will see what I am talking about.

I think we can all agree it stops when you speed up into higher speeds. Look at a baja the same size and run along beside him at 60 mph. You will se most of the baja still in the water but a Checkmate will be over half way out.

mine did it all the way through wot. my buddies 253, 259/270, yes they stop when you speed up. but where we run its nice to run 30-35 mph and in joy the scenery, and not bounce down the river. aspecially(dont know if i spelled that right) when bayliners, rinkers, ebbtides, and other boats are riding straight as an arrow. just my opinion and $.02

Mine would do it worse with the 4 blade, because i tryed my boys 3 blade, and the boat stoped it almost all together, but i love the hole shot of the 4 blade..the 4 blade is alaways trying to lift the back of the boat out of the water....but however ive alaways been told that the right 3 blade is faster than a 4

Prop ?

I have an 88 convincor 251 with a mild 454 heads cam intake and CMIs with a 23 3 blade it runs 60mph at 5000 rpm but is miserable to get up on the water . I put checkmate 632 27 4 blade on it and made a huge difference cruised much better but launched incredibly hard it killed 1000 rpm at top speed but lost some mph i know it was too big but wanted to see what difference it would make. I am gonna try his 24 4 blade this weekend and see what happens. Im not gonna argue with you in his thread about his motor but i will say im a newbie to boating but i definitely AM a motor guy . Sounds like your just getting started to with your check so maybe this will help !

i dont mean pull. like push the right side into the water as you gas it around 30 or so
you should know what causes that, you have been around checkmates your hole life, and you know everything............Thrust me i have been in probably 10to15 convinsors or so,and its the prop,or whoever put the brovo on it didnt do it right...

wow stalker....for someone with such a bad ass 251 with no pics shouldnt worry about my boat. or you wish yours looked like mine...... i tell you what your b.s will catch up to you on here. like your 27p spinelli that turned into your trying to sell 32 bravo thats on your boat now!!! haha by the way its called a convincor if you have been on 15 you should at least know how to spell it.
