525 header issues

Man it's easy to get lost in all of the 525 header related info online! I wish it were as easy as just switching to a different header. Well it could be but this boat has silent choice which my friend wants to keep so he can close it in the marinas. Sure he could run straight out and use external mufflers but then it's too quite and the motor would have to be pulled to remove the Y pipe. Mercury doesnt like the switch because it relocates the mixing point closer to the tubes so when the water splashes off the switch flapper it can run down the back two tubes into the cylinders. Many builders/ mechanics support this theory. But some including the factory that built this boat say "if it were going to happen it would have by now. We've built hundreds of boats with this set up for years" :brickwall: at this point we are trying to find a system that will include a switch option and not have a chance of reversion. Not sure if it is even possible. Oh boats are fun....

"you're friend" understands that boats cost lots of money to run and maintain and that buying a boat is usually the cheapest part of the whole deal. Stuff is gonna break the 525 is a high performance motor granted the least in mercs blue series why worry so much about the headers eventually any brand will leak if you run em hard enough if "he" is so paranoid pull em off every season and send em to cmi have em gone through pull the plugs every time check for condensation any real performance boater spends twice as much time working on their rig as running it
If you don't believe me just ask around there is no simple fix around just a lot of work cause if there was merc would have already made millions off of it:D

You're absolutely right jazzy! "he" is a bit paranoid and it's about time for "him" to just make move :)

Interesting, I have not seen to many 525's with silent choice.

I didn't know there were many boats with that setup. What kind of boat is your "friend" looking at?

HD

Is that what Mercruiser, Merc Racing, CMI, Dana, Stainless, Eddie Marine, etc. recommend?

Dont know what they recommend, I just see what all the big boys post on OSO and see what they are doing. I watch and read their post all the time, most of your big twins from 35 foot plus are run in salt. And it always starts with the exhaust when the boats start to have problems.

I'd buy that my headers have been repaired at least once also aluminum heads take a beating if they're not anodized in the water jackets
