71 mx-15 restoration and build

Sorry to hear about your back issues.
I feel yout pain, I have the exact same problem with my back but luckily has not bothered me for a few years now.

Looking at your build is really weired for me because its almost exactly what I am about to do with my MX build.

Mind you, I love your wooden floor section, may copy that if you don`t mind.

Thanks it sucks ! I was reading through your thread last night looks like your off to a good start. No I don't mind at all. I think its awesome you want to do it! That must mean i did something right on my boat if someone wants to copy me lol. If you have any questions on how I did it send me a pm.

I got a question may not matter I'm not sure. I have not been able to find anything on this. When I'm sanding the bottom of my boat. On the leading edge of the chines should they have a crisp sharp edge. Also the edge where the transom meets the bottom. I'm just wondering if there's any performance to be made here? I may be just over doing to here. Most of the edges on the chines are in rough shape so I'm going to have to build them back up. I know that it can't to sharp so the gel coat has something to stick to.

Should be sharp .....

Well I worked a little bit on the boat here and there filling holes and scratches on the bottom. The some more sanding. As my back would let me sand a little here and there. Something to do to keep me sane. So here's pictures of the boat with the body work done and washed down with a hose and a scotch brite pad. I had to do this to wash the epoxy so the primer would stick. 63D-C9873F3ACA71-5838-0000074ECF5AB1AF_zps8f13ae12.jpg

Today I sprayed the primer. I used DURATEC VINYL ESTER PRIMER. I called them and they told me that this is exactly what this stuff is used for as a barrier coat to go from epoxy to gel coat. It's mostly used for mold work or reworking but same idea. This stuff is exactly like mixing gel coat 2% hardener by volume of primer. So 1 pint (16oz) of primer to 1/8 ounces of hardener. I didn't know that I needed hardener for the primer so I thought I was sol this morning for spraying the primer. But lucky me it uses the same hardener as gel coat. Good thing I ordered extra of everything! I plan on making mistakes! Got to learn some how. I only mixed a pint at a time because the primer has a pot life of 10-15 min. I worked fast didn't want it to set off in the spray gun. I haven't got to go to harbor freight to stock up on the 10$ spray gun. I have a kinda cheep spray gun now and I didn't want to wait! So I sprayed fast and as soon as I was out I ran thinner through the gun to clean it before mixing up another pint of primer. Other then some bugs and a little run came out well.

Well it rained today so I wasn't able to work on the boat but here's a sneak peek of the mettle flake I went with. It's not an exact match witch I'm ok with it's really close to that was under the pin striping stickers on the boat.

And I thought I would add some silver for a little extra pop!!!!

Here's all the supplies I got to do the gel cote job. 2 gl of clear mattel flake gel cote. 1qt of styrene/thinner (thinking I may need more) hardener for the gel cote ( witch worked for the primer also) wax additive for the the last coat of gel coat. Makes it easer to buff. 1 lb of purpel .025 (bass boat size) mettle flake. 4 oz of silver .015 (stander size) I also got the Flake Buster II gun to shoot the flake .025 . And 1 gl of Durrateck Vinyl Ester Primer. The gel coat and every thing to go with it from http://www.uscomposites.com/index.html . All the mettle flake and the gun from http://www.tcpglobal.com/Customshop/ksflake.aspx . And the primer from http://www.merrittsupply.com/products/29055-duratec-vinyl-ester-primers.aspx

Well got the bottom of the boat gel coated today. A lot of time in taping. I used all my purple flake looks like I need more for the top. I used about 1-1/4 gl of gel probably will have to get more of that. I didn't get to do the last coat with wax yet it was getting late and temp was dropping. I think ill have to sand a bit to knock down some flake that's really standing up on edge. You can't really tell but there's silver flake over the white.
