Bunk vs Roller

Hi All,

I have an 87 starflite that came with a roller trailer.

It will be on the trailer for 8 months (storage) and in the water the other four.

My question is this: Can I convert the trailer to a bunk trailer? and are there any diagrams/rules to follow on where to put the bunks?

Thanks

i think it would be less work if you put it on craigslist for trade..i think the roller maybe more in demand for heavier boats..

I've converted a few trailers from roller to bunk, no big deal if your handy.
You can buy universal mounts or make your own. I like to have 4 bunks under the boat, use 2x6 pressure treated and you can buy carpet for the bunks from "Overtons". look at some trailers and copy there placement. I like to keep the bunks as low as possible to keep the boat low, makes for esier loading & unloading.

Thanks

Thanks Guys,

I got a better look at it this weekend, the mounts that are on it look to be universal, and there is about 10' between them. Unfortunatly, there are only 2 sets which = 2 bunks. It looks like it will be a simple conversion to at least put the first 2 on, which is all I should need to start working.

I am assuming that the 2x6 is on edge, and not flat, correct? I was also thinking of beveling the 2x6 and bolting a beveled 2x4 to it to provide more support for the boat.
The only question I have is the step in the hull? Should I notch the bunks for the step or just let it ride on top.

Also, does it require special carpet? Why not Home Depot outdoor special.

Thanks

Pony depending on what size/length of boat most bunks are flat w/ the exception of jon boats which have the bunks on end. See the back of my trailer/boat. I've seen folks use outdoor carpet from lowes or home depot, it depends on you though. I would buy the one from overton's. Hope this helps.

The 2x6 would be flat. i had a look at my trailer. I have just 2 bunks. The other thing to make sure is that the bunks go past the transom a few inches. This keeps the weight off the hull at an edge.
I am sure there are a few people on here that have a similar hull on a bunk trailer that can help with placement.

Although i have a different boat (Pulse 170) here's a shot looking from the side.

Thanks CM, the pics are great. I'm going to stop at west marine tomorrow and see what they have for brackets. I was on the fence about this but after all I have read here, the trailer it is on it wrong. Lack of support, sits way to high, etc. The conversion should be fairly simple, as nuts and bolts with wood is very easy for me.....it is the fiberglass that I am going to have a problem with:sssh:
