C'Hawk Trailer Winches NFG

Call me stupid, but whenever I can- I float on along side the dock, then winch the rest of the way onto the trailer. I hate powering on and avoid it whenever I can. I also attach the safty cable to the bow before pulling out of the water just for my peace of mind.

Sorry to see that on the c hawks... never had a problem with my old eagle, just not a fan of my fiberglass fenders or the verticle box sections holding up the bunks (no drains, that I can see). I've been debating on which trailer to go with whenever the time comes. If I ever get another eagle it will have steel fenders.

Sounds like you have to be gentle with that sooperboat. Is she a delicate flower ???

If you can find a well stocked hardware store they will hav heavy duty fender washers that are about 3x the thickness of regular ones but I would follow JT's advice and get the drill out.

John

I did drill 2 holes and add bolts in the corners and kept the 2 in the center as well. I have lock washers under the nuts. I agree on the washers under the bolt heads.

my trailer is a float on. if the trailer is not deep enough the front of the vee will scrap on the trailer. o 1972 trailer you got to love them.

The ramp here is pretty steep but I can still float the boat on without an issue. It helps that there is a dock right next to the ramp so I don't have to get wet when doing it alone.

I cringe when I see someone powering up at "my" ramp. Its created quite a hole with a big pile of gravel behind it over the years. Not to mention props are expensive.

You must be one strong sob to bend up a winch pulling only 2".

Well its not hard when chawk didnt mount it correctly. The whole thing would twist when any torque was applied. Eventually the gears didnt even mesh because the frame got twisted so bad. The new winch is effortless to use with one hand. Chawk should pay me for my consultation time for telling them the correct way to mount a winch. I charge $100 per hour with a 2 hour minimum thats pretty cheap considering what I will do to cost them as much business as I can. They told me they have never had a complaint like this. Doesnt look like it from what I see in this thread. I have no tolerance for incompetence and for a mfgr to not even own up for their lackluster effort is just plain carelessness. Its no wonder this country cant mfgr anything thats worth a **** anymore. :pissed::brickwall::mad::yell:

c-hawk trailer winches

To whoever posted the remarks about lack of engineering on c-hawks winches. Let's start with the basics, the winch should be capable of 50% of the wboats total weight, and a 1200# winch is more than enough. These are drive on trailers and the winch is a glorified tie down so for a $100.00 an hour,2hr. minimum I will gladly teach you how to load your boat. This is my second C-Hawk and these guys know what they are doing and I'm totaly satisfied and would recommend them to my freinds.

Vision, I think you're missing jg's point. Attaching a stamped steel winch with just two bolts is not a very smart way to do it. I think the quality of the winch is questionable at best and the decision to attach it like that is simply a bad idea. I would expect at least 3 bolts (with two of the three being side by side and in the front) if not 4 holding it on with washers under the bolt head and the nut.

 First post and gonna start teaching!
The trailers are nice but they don't make the junk winches there using. They not only need to upgrade there winch but have enough COMMON sense to bolt it on correctly.

FYI einstein your calculation is missing one important factor, the grade of the ramp. There is a ratio formula used for this and the greater the incline the more force is exerted on the winch. Your figures will work if the boat is on a flat surface but where I boat the ramps are inclined. And FYI I do drive my boat on within 2" of the rubber then crank it the rest of the way, forgive me if I dont like ramming my boat into the stop like a moron. And after all of the boats I've had with trailers I have never replaced a winch......ever!!!
The point is the winch was mounted wrong and the quality of it was lackluster at best and I can say the same of the trailer jack it's another POS and will need replacing in the near future as well.
If a company wants to be known for a quality product then produce one and dont cop out on the extras and blame another mfgr for the issue. For another $40 they could have put on a acceptable winch and for another $1 an hour someone who knows how to mount it correctly. As an organization you are judged on your final product by the consumer.
IMO C-hawk has quality control issues and apparantly bean counters that dont know quality components, this is all a refelction on c-hawk as a whole.

Probably a c-hawk employee. If so..... very scary:confused:
Heck I've given him enough info to justify a raise.

You also say there jacks are junk too, well becuase there from the same company. They also used the wrong axels on their trailers for a while that held water. Turned into a rust issue. They told their customers to drill holes in them and blamed every one but themselves. They need to stand behind the products they choose to use on their trailers. Cutting corners is gonna bite em in the azz sooner or later. But they sure are pretty trailers lol

Yea I noticed the jack was from the same mfgr and "made right here in china" as well. If my axel had those issues they would have definitly gotten an invoice from me and a good case of hemroids after I drove up to buckeye land to jam it up their A$$ sideways with no lube !!!
But maybe after looking at the nice paint & pinstriping for a while it would change my mind................NOT !!!!!:pissed:
