CHECKMATE FASTER than BAJA PROOF

Big Red

Well-known member
Well I have the proof that Checkmate makes a hole lot faster hull than Baja. This is no BS and who ever challenges this better have proof to back it up.

I have to pictures below The Checkmate is a 300 Convincor with a factory installed 525 merc the boat runs 80 mph GPS

The second pic is a photo of a 26 foot Baja not including the swim platform I think. It does not matter anyway the Checkmate is at least 2 foot longer. The Baja has a factory installed 600SC merc and it runs 81 gps.

So here it is Combs is faster then Smith Ha Ha rock.gif

That's saying something, when you can get a single in a 30' V to hit 80mph. Very nice! Now where was this little get together that we all missed?

Remember though, the 300 is really a 28' boat without the platform. But yes, still 2ft longer than that Baja.

It was last fall at a toys for tots fun run we did. Checkmate stopped by going to FL for the power boat mag. test. This Saturday I stopped by the guys house that owns the Baja and got the real speed numbers. I heard it was around 80 but was not sure. He said the Baja had a hard time tring to carry the hull. He also complimented many times how good my boat and SCT's boat carried the hull threw the water.

I just thought that was good info it takes a 600SC to get a 26 foot baja to hit 80 and it only takes a 525 in a 28 foot Checkmate to hit 80. These two boats where factory built boats.

The guys Baja is not a lazy boat it can hit those high numbers all day long any day.

I ran against that Baja last fall at our LKN Fun RUN. The owner is a great guy and the boat runs a solid 80 mph. I remember I had to lean on the throttles to get buy him. I always thought he ran a 525SCI instead of a 600SCI. I agree that I'm surprised the boat isn't faster with the 600. It's still a nice boat though (for a Baja)!

Here is a pic of it next to my old wore out 96 mate

that 300 convincor is a local here on the potomac river where i run, he's a maryland state delegate (hints the colors of the boat, colors of maryland flag) the boat does run 80 mph. he also has an open bow 270 with those colors in the flag graphics. i ran a 24 outlaw with a 540 ci.(from what i was told) in it at the poker run last weekend, and wooped its a$$. it felt great.

well, i must disagree to a lower HP point. and yes i have proof.

i have a 26 ZT 2003 it has a 375hp 496 mag boat is rated at 4,000 pounds runs a 4 blade 22p with 2 people and 1/2 tank or less the boat went 60 mph best ever!!! i did a bblades prop (which isnt tuned in yet) and went 61.6
i put a 3 blade 23 p on and went 59.x i put a lab 23 on and went 58.x
this was tested by my GPM on my boat, and a hand held i bring with me on my snomobile. and temps where in the 60's for every test with water temps in the 50's

i was in FLA about 2 months ago where my father has a 25 outlaw 2005 with the same motor, 375 hp 496 boat is also bone stock with the same tips i put on my ZT, so these boats are the same (besides maybe the computer tune between 03 and 05) this boat with atleast 3/4 fuel and 4 people went 61.5, 61.7, 61.5, 61.3 on one day. then with less fuel and 2 people the next day i went 61.5 and 61.8
this boat runs a stock 23p had no props to test down there.
this said, the baja was faster all around stock for stock, or even with the prop on mine. the temps this was done in where mid 80's with high 70 low 80* water temps. gps used was the one on that boat backed up by the same handheld i used on mine.

gps was withing .2 mph between the 2 every single run on both boats

ive speed run my mate in every condition possable, every temp possable, every time of the day possable etc etc etc, and it just isnt as fast.
i hate to say it, but this is my test.

keep in mind my 26 and the out law are the same size pretty much, my buddys 25 outlaw tied next to mine, they are the same. but baja is rated at 4,600 pounds im rated at 4,000

never scaled either boat, but im guessing my mate is more then 4,000 pounds, im just going by book listed weight

Well NOYZEE I dont know the reason your boat wont run but 60 MPH. That must really suck getting out run by baja's all the time. But 60 mph is a average speed for any boat. Most of them are pushing water instead of riding on the pad. Maybe its more performance speed numbers that seperate the boats, than your average speed numbers.

Their is a pontoon down here that runs 60. Maybe your boat is water logged.

Your ZT260 should be running 66-68 gps with a 375hp 496....You should be able to turn a 23p Mirage Plus right around 5000rpms with that combo...

boats not water logged, we got it brand new and it has always run 70-72 on the speedo and the last 3 years 58-60 on gps.

that boat tested in 02 with a 425 hp and gps at 66 mph, im 50 hp less, and fully loaded for weekend trips, 2 anchores, 2 batterys etc etc. but my dads baja is loaded the same, he has 2 big heavy anchors tho, i have a small light one and an alum one. my boat spins a 23 right up to 4800 ish and hits the limmiter with the labbed 23. hits the limmiter with the 22 aswell but bblades did a 26 for me with custom cuts and it went allot better but under reved, he is doing me a 24 now. the boat runs very very wet the new 24 is going to be done up for a tad more bow lift, and labbed for the right rpm. im hoping to see a hard 62-63 mph loaded up.

but stock for stock the baja got me, my buddys 99 25 outlaw also got me, he had the 385 hp in his 25 and ran 63-64 with a lab 23 from bblades

i dont really care win or loose, i love both boats and i think once i get the prop right i'll be in good shape, butoh well. i just like going out and having a great time. and around here unless im well over 70 mph there arnt any smaller boats for me to play with anyway. im about the slowest, then after me is over 70, then a few of the 33-47's i go out with are 85-110 in any conditions, so for me to spend coin to go 70 is silly, i'll save that $$$$ and use it as a down payment for my next boat:devil:

ps, i also agree that maybe with real power in these boats they will be faster. i look at my boat all the time and just dont understand why she isnt faster, but again maybe with the prop i will pick up some, and im sure with more power and the right prop it would be a huge gain

here is my boat with the big motor 50 more HP. you know this test was done as dry as can be with one person and no gas with perfect conditions.

http://www.powerboattv.com/newboat/2002/02CheckmateZT260.asp

my boat has 10 gall fresh water with pump and hose, 2 batterys all the wiring, extra speakers including one 15" sub in the very nose cone, 2 600 watt amps, pleanty of gas, and extra person and 50 hp less.
anchores, coolers (with not much in them)

so what figure it has to be a few hundred pounds heavier then ther test boat?? that has to be 1-2 mph, then toss in the fact the prop doesnt turn the boat right at this time.
like i said, id be happy, fully loaded to see 62-63 and i bet empty 63-65 wouldnt be out of the question in perfect conditions.
but agin, do some tweeking to the baja, and lightin its load. wonder what would happen

Maybe your sound system is pulling a major draw on your ignition and your spark plugs are not firing all the fuel in the cylinders.
