CHECKMATE OWNERS RALLY 2015

Yep, I missed last year, which was unavoidable, but hopefully I will not miss another!! Cant wait to see everyone!

Take care Dave, and can't wait to see your boat.

Chuck

We are all booked for Wens.- Mon. For now. Might stay longer or run down to Nashville Mon. and Tues.then home. We are excited for this Checkmate invasion!!!:cheers::banana:

I have a 79 Checkmate Jet. My travel distance is limited so wondered which locations on Cumberland you folks would be gathering other than Grider?

76 Falls is where the Checkmate houseboat stays anchored all weekend. Also Guffey Creek is usually where we raft up a day or 2. With approx 30 members , there are people going all different directions and running the boats. Also some go to Harmon or run to Burnside .

Hello everyone,

First off, Grider’s overall docking area is HUGE. At this time of year, there are more houseboats at the dock than I had ever seen in my life. As my stopover back from Florida, I checked in to Grider Hill. I figure I would post my thoughts for everyone’s benefit, as well as my own for the future when I return in July. I will post pictures when I get a chance as well.

When I got here, I was met by friendly staff and a pretty empty parking lot. It looks like the lake is still working off the thaw from the snow a couple weeks ago. The water looks like it is maybe 6 feet too high at the moment and there is a high water mark probably 3 feet higher. Their restaurant was not open yet for the season, but it looks like it will be a decent place to eat. I am staying in a lower-level lodge room and I will probably be booking the same thing tomorrow for July if it is available. The room was very clean. It has a TV, heater, AC, bathroom with Shower/Toilet/Sink, separate closet, mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker.

The lodge rooms are within a stone’s throw of the docking area. The Sassafras rooms are just behind them. Outside of the lodge rooms there is ample parking for vehicles. There are signs all over the place that let you know not to bring your boat in front of these rooms. Just follow them, because I would say there’s a good chance you will run into trouble getting out of the tight parking lot in front of the rooms. Within sight of the lodge complex there are quite a few places for vehicles with boat trailers as well as the launch. At the trailer parking area there is a large ramp with enough space to turn around any boat I have ever seen.

The 734 is a little curvy and narrower than I thought it would be, particularly if you are bringing a large boat and truck, but every corner was clearly marked. Initially I came in from 127 on the west side of the 734. I am going to say the south side from 127/90/734 junction is probably more straight-forward, as you can go straight at the Y split turn.
As far as local stores, there are 2 corner/general stores within a walk or maybe a 3-minute drive. There is a gas station at the 127/734/90 junction, less than 10 minutes away with a built-in Hunts pizza and the usual gas station amenities. The nearest town is Albany, about 15m away following 127 south. If you are going to Albany and accidentally take the 127-bypass south, just make a left to go east into town. Albany has a couple grocery stores, a hardware store, a marina, a motel, a few gas stations, some family restaurants and a half dozen fast food restaurants.

Post-stay:
They mentioned that they are getting pretty full on the multiple occupancy rooms. I booked my room and they mentioned that I would be guaranteed a slip that would be assigned to me for the duration of my stay. There is limited parking on site for attached-trailers, with a nearby gravel lot and slightly further grass lot for additional overflow. As security watches the sites, they have never had any issues with theft.

I hope this helps someone out.

There's only one thing guaranteed at Grider Hill and that's that nothing is guaranteed...especially a covered slip guaranteed by the resort staff...they seem to have a lack of communication between the resort staff and the dock staff...good luck see you in July!

That goes for just about every marina on the lake when it comes to transient slips, its usually first come first serve. I've had the same problems at Conley & Jamestown unless you are a annual slip renter then you get that option. It must be a common theme between marinas on this lake. However Grider is giving 15% off for all rally goers on slips, rooms & houseboats.

That was supposed to be the case last year as well, but when I mentioned it, they looked at me like I had two heads.
