JUPITER PULSARE

OK BOARD MEMBERS, HERE'S A TECH QUESTION FOR YOU. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MERC 3 LITRE 225 XRI AND A MERC 3 LITRE 225 EFI? IS IT ONLY A NAME CHANGE OR ARE THERE INTERNAL OR UPGRADED CHANGES MADE TO THE XRI.

A bit of a guess here but, I believe that the XRI was what merc refered to as an EFI engine. I think then that you may be looking at 2 engines one model year apart (which could mean that one was built the last week of may the other built the first week of june. (we are already getting 2005 product). Get me serial numbers and maybe i can find something out.

Jupiter Pulsare: I belive that the XRi is part of the Mercury XR models, that is High Performance models. Mercury designates their hi-performance models as "XR" the "i" is just for Fuel Injection. Years ago Mercury introduced the 150HP XRs, the XR2, then XR4, then the XR6 (it is carburated and they still make it). These engines were designed for high performance applications, BASS boating, etc. The EFI engines are just the electronic fuel injected engines for every day or "standard" applications. I am not sure what internal components are different between the XRi than the EFI, maybe none, the difference might be in the way they tune the engine. I believe the 225XRi should be pumping around 235 - 245 HP from the factory. We have to remember that sometime back all outboard manufacturers chaged the way they measure HP, some were measuring HP at the block and others where measuring at the prop. Today, all manufacturers measure HP at the prop shaft. Try to talk to a Mercury technician to find out if the HP rating on your engine is at the prop or at the block.

I'M GOING TO RESEARCH NADA. IF THEY LIST BOTH THE EFI AND XRI MOTORS IN THE SAME YEAR I WOULD GUESS THAT THERE MUST BE SOME DIFFERNCES!!!

No difference. Just Merc's old way of referring to EFI. If you look at a new shop manual the cover refers to them as an EFI the specs. inside all say XRI. This is not true with the xr2, xr4, xr6 as these were more of the Bass motors. All of which were carb. motors. For instance, a 1988 150 was a 2.0l block with a standard large hub gear case. The xr4 was a 2.4L block with a small hub gear case and some what low water pickups.
