Engine Hatch Actuator ('91 - 251)

I'm looking for information on the engine hatch actuator....where it attaches to the engine hatch. I'm not sure this was ever in place correctly when I bought the boat. I kinda left it the way it was and it worked fine. Well...now it works most times, and sometimes doesn't. That's the first problem. The second problem is I want to know the correct way this attaches to the engine hatch...if anyone has a pic that would be great. Also, does attaching it correctly prevent the hatch from being lifted if the actuator does not work?

This is how mine is. Hope it helps.
I always wondered what would happen if the actuator failed. It's just a worm drive and no way to get the hatch open.

I dont have a quick pic to send but I can tell you. Its centered and mine seems to be kinda rare haveing a quick release pull if it fails. Mine studarded a bit once and I could not get it right. I ended up doing away with all old wires and rewiring and have been good since. I'll look for pics. There probaly still on here somewhere.
 
looks like you have the main parts so thats good. I'll find the pics of what it should look like.
Ok found them quicker then I thought heres a few let me know if you need some with it apart.

Sim's Enforcer 230 has a nice release on his hatch lift. If the battery goes dead you just pull a cable and it releases the piston from the mount.
 
aj, I also have a 251 and mine is now mounted just like Budmans but I can
see where it used to be mounted in the center and probably was moved
over to clear the taller Dart intake and Holley carb.
I have seen them mounted in various locations, pretty much what ever
works for your application. Also never use a bolt on the cylinder where
it bolts to the deck lid, this way when your battery or hatch cylinder fails
you can take the vent or air inlet off the side in the rear and reach in the
engine compartment with a coat hanger or something to pull the pin.
Any way this is what I did when mine failed.

Anyway, I have some questions based on Keith's pics. First does it appear the metal piece in my pic is bent? Second what does the small rod above the actuator rod do?? Keith do you have any pics like your third one posted, but straight on?? Apart in order would be awesome.
 
In the second pick if you look to the left you see a red cable. Do you have that? Thats a cable that runs from behind your seat up into the hatch and attaches to the release. You pull the cable and it releases the ram. I can get some more detailed pics for you tommorow.

You know I was never a cat person. Always had dogs growing up. Then....had our own house..no pets and a stray cat showed up. That was the coolest old cat ever...dog like too. She would lay down by the gill while you grilled, never leave the yard, and was the most friendly cat I'd ever met. She passed away and I was crushed. So...went to the humane society and got another cat a year later......this one has no respect for personal space. ;)
 
It runs from behind the front bolester under the gunnel. If I confused you. You have the main parts. So the rest is just hardware store stuff.

Tried to reach the "hardware store" today for a new sunpad skin. All I got was ringing off the hook.

Maybe try emailing them. I would hope if nobody is around to answer the phone they would atleast be monitoring the emails.
