Exhaust Tuner - TO do or NOT

I redid the post with a different heading hoping to get some input. I have a 2.5L 175 merc, carbed. and I have the same year 200 tuner. I was going to put in my 175 merc. Do I have to jet different, or is it pretty much put it on and go? Thanks!
 
i'm pretty sure you'll have to rejet - you are changing the exhaust flow - you don't want to run lean and cook the motor.
 
If you have the stock jetting you won't need to change for the 200 tuner. I had a 200 tuner in mine and changed to the 2.4l bridgeport tuner. If I were you I would go for the bridgeport tuner.

200 tuner won't do much...there are several other things that would help the motor, and if youre going to change tuners you might as well get a G force or something that works better than a 200 stocker
 
For the mid 90's 2.5L V-6 Mercury had two tuners. To keeep it simple a long and a short one. I know the 150 had the long one, and I know the 200 had the short one. I'm honestly not sure about the 175. The length's were around 7.5" for the short and 13.5" for the long.

The short one will definitely give you a little more power on top end, however you will sacrifice some low end pulling power. Is the diffrence noticable...Yes. Is it like going up 25hp and a whole new motor...No. If you do change it the jetting is probably fine, but I would go up one size and try it and you can always jet down.

G-Force tuners will break off it time, seen it 5 - 6 times.

It really depends on what is important to you for power band and how comfortable you are in "tuning" your motor.
 
A good economical combo is a Bob's tuner and a set of Boyesen reeds. My 1997 200efi with those 2 items and a Bob's nose cone ran 79 gps on a 2100 long deck! I can get you the Bob's tuner for $75+shipping and the price of the reeds depends on which ones your motor takes. boatman
 
Forget the G-Force tuner! Yes, they break at the flange. You can install the 200 tuner you have and it will be better than the long one you have now. If you want better than that the 2.4L Bridgeport tuner is about as good as it gets. They work great on the 175 2.5L carb or EFI. I have one. The reeds will make it idle slightly better but, I have yet to see where they made a power differance that could be felt. The fiber reeds do give you some peace of mind in the fact that if one breaks it won't ruin a mota. If you are running stock RPMs this isn't much of a worry. I had Boysen Power reeds in mine and took them out and installed rubber coated reed blocks from a 240 Sport Jet.

If you want the most bang for the buck. Shave the heads and set the timing up. Depending what you do and how much you go you will need to run higher octane gas. THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE WITH CARE. You can make a lot of expensive parts into scrap if you don't know what you are doing.
