Fuel leak out of top of tank

DropTop5.0

Well-known member
I filled my tank right to the top this time and headed to the river. When I got there I had probably a half pint of fuel in the bilge.

It appears to be coming from the top of the tank around the black circular thing. Is this the sending unit? Is this a gasket to something like black RTV? Any advice on how to fix it?

I also had a problem with my trim switch at the helm. It works on the motor but not the helm. I have not chased the wires yet but if there's any advice I'll take it. Thanks.

Yup, that's the sending unit. Embibe cool beverage, remove sending unit, clean sealing surfaces, reassemble with new gasket. Observe proprietary safety concerning gasoline.

What Jim said.
If its the same trim switch as mine they wear out. Mine started only going down and then I would have to hit the trailer to lift. cheap and easy to replace.

If you cannot locate the gasket just go to auto parts store and buy sheet of gasket material and cut a new one. Just make sure material is rated for gasoline exposure.

They also have screws made for replacing the sending unit. They have a small rubber gasket and sealant already on them. They work great, you could probably just use the old ones with sealant but why worry the new ones are cheap.

And, by the way... Don't know if you're gonna be sleeping in your boat..
but quite a few of us are going to to be sleeping in our boats next to your
boat.
Would Loooove to see your fuel issues resolved.
How can we be of assistance?:rof::poke::devil:

Okay, I ordered a gasket and a "No Smoking" sign. It's only 68 gallons of 93 octane.

I'm not sure why my boat is set up like this but I trim up my motors using the switches below that are the same as my tabs. It works and I don't know any better but I'm sure there is something out there much cooler.

My problem was the port switch was not working. I can't really trim the motors up much anyways so when I water tested it I just put the motor where I wanted it with the switch on the motor.

Yesterday I dug out my meters and testing probe and I was determined that I was going to find my issue. I measured voltage at the switch good on the stbd and bad on the port. I should have realized its not the switch but I haven't done this in a long time.:brickwall: I changed leads to rule out the switch. Switch tested fine. I check the wires at the motor, all check out fine. I start tracing the wire back from the switch and then I find my problem.

I'm such an idiot.:brickwall::brickwall::brickwall:

If you're looking for an alternative to the dash switches maybe a dual turn signal switch set up? Instead of one for trim and one for jack plate you can do both trim.

Yeah, I'm pretty proud of that one. I was ready to get the oscilloscope out and and analyze some Ngates and all sorts of stuff. All I could do is laugh.

This is your beer of choice, correct?

Not sure if this would be an alternative, BUT, could you use one rocker switch to control both trim motors at the same time? Once you get both motors sync'd for identical start position then both motors will have the same trim up/down position at all times. ?????

Since I don't own a boat with twin motors I have no idea if it would work.
I know it was a slow process to get my sending switch adjusted to work decently with the gauge for trim position. Getting two to show the exact same position would be a royal PITA.

JUST ASKING if it is a possibility.

If the current requirement draws too much amperage a control solenoid could be put in place to handle the total load without melting the rocker switch.

Don't Shoot! Anything could be possible.

I wouldn't hook both trim pumps to the same switch. You can have two brand new identical pumps and they wouldn't run the same speed. You need to leave them separate. Now, what would be good is to have single switch on throttle to run both for speed and leave one on dash for fine tuning of individuals.
