Headliner repair (Warranty Coverage Thread)

Seamate

Member
The headliner in the bow of my 2007 2100 Pulsare has come unglued and fallen down. I live in NJ and I have been trying to find someone who can repair (re-glue) it for me.

I have had a number of marine upholstry shops turn me away because they say the job is too difficult (no room to work). Others have quoted me ridiculous prices ($1200 to $2000).

Does anyone know of a shop in New Jersey (Tri State area) who is not afraid to tackle this job?

I would appreciate any help! Thanks in advance.

what type of material ? carpet type ? most can be re-glued with 3M spray adhesive, carfully pull down, spray both, let tack for a couple of minutes then work back to the open side rolling out any wrinkles, hope this helps..Rob

Rob,

Sounds easy enough!

My problem is that the peripheral edge of the fabric is fastened behind a strip. This strip has to be removed in order to get to the backside of the fabric. Checkmate tells me that the only way to remove these strips is to remove the rubrail insert and then remove the screws which hold these strips in place.

Sounds like alot of work for me on a brand new 2007 boat!!!!!

Sounds like a warrantey issue. Have you talked to Checkmate about fixing it? I know I wouldn't hesitate, maybe you can work with the local Checkmate dealer out there.

No warranty on this boat and its a 07. I wan't to know why the dealer or factory won't cover this. Did it just fall down or did you do something to help it. Or did you get a smokin deal on the boat and don't want to stir nothing up.

this is a warranty issue, faulty workmanship - it is checkmate's responsibility to repair it. it may be cheaper to have a local shop do the work, and have checkmate pay the bill. get on the phone and get this resolved - do not take no for an answer.

i spent 10 years doing boat warranty - this is definatly a claim.

I agree...they should cover this no question....no way you can cause this...the adhesive just gave up for whatver reason, but pulling the rubrail insert and the screws is not that big of a deal if you have to...just needs to be warm to re-instal the insert....Rob

Warrantee

Thanks for all your comments and good advice. Let me give you some details.

I purchased my new 2007 2100 Pulsare / Chawk Trailer directly from Checkmate. I paid for the boat and picked it up at the factory in Nov 2006. I brought the boat home and had it rigged with a 300X.

I guess you could say, I purchased my boat from the Bill Combs Checkmate.

By the way, this is my 4th new Checkmate.

In April of 2007 ( The first warm day) the headliner came unglued and fell down. The boat was sitting on the trailer at the time.

I called the factory and was told that they would try to hook me up with a dealer to fix the headliner. The only local Checkmate dealer couldn't do the job. It was beyond their expertise.

I tried a number of marine upholstry shops, but I couldn't find anyone willing to fix it. Eventually I found two places who reluctantly agreed to do the repair. One place wanted $2000 the other $1200.

I contacted Checkmate again and explained my situation. I didn't think I should have to pay $1200 for this defect. In late July, Checkmate and I agreed that if they could not find one of their dealers to fix my boat, I would trailer the boat back to Ohio at the end of my boating season, and it would be repaired at the factory.

It is now mid October and the NEW CHECKMATE of Doug Smith does not feel as though they are responsible for this defect. They assure me that my 10 year hull warrantee would be honored (I am not so sure!), but this doesn't seem to be a big enough issue.

At this point I just want to get my boat fixed. I think they should pay the bill, but regardless I will get it fixed.

The NEW CHECKMATE needs to understand that it takes more than a few fancy stripes to make a company successful. Quality products and CUSTOMER SERVICE should be their number one priorities. Needless to say I am very disappointed in the NEW CHECKMATE.

Having said all that, anybody know of a good upholstry shop in New Jersey?

I will let you all know how this turns out. Thanks for all your advice!

WELL WELL, I LIKE TO HEAR SOME IMPUT ON THIS AND I KNOW SOME CHECKMATE EMPLOYEES ARE GOING TO READ THIS THREAD AND DEALERS. MY HEADLINNER HAS BEEN HANGING FOR 11 YEARS AND IT HAS NOT FALLEN DOWN.

COME ON FIX THE MANS HEADLINER OR PAY THE BILL THIS IS A LOYAL CHECKMATE OWNER.

i'd be makin em pay for transport too ! gas @ 3p/g ! coop n the bigrig ?lol anyway thats just wrong n where was checks new owner b4 here ?hmmm

I sold a new 24 Pulsare in May this year. He called me last month to tell me his headliner fell down too. He's supposed to bring it over for me to look at. Checkmate told him to call me. I'm not sure what to do till I see it.

Wildman what do you do about your warranty work that needs to be done on boats that where sold before the new owners took over and changed the name.

Actually I've never had a warrantee problem since then. This will be the first. Usually, if it's something small, I just got the parts from Checkmate and fixed it myself. I've never turned in a bill for labor. This headliner in the 24 will be the test. The owner only had it for two months.

Thank you for the reply WILDMAN I am glad somebody had the balls to say something. But I should have expected no less from you, since you ride wheelies across the lake at 100mph

i agree that checmate should have found someone to fix the boat in may

but to wait untill oct you should have got that in writing along with who pays transportation and lodging.

c.y.a. always

$1200 is not that far out of line for the amount of work involved

if it is fabric like in a car you will need new fabric

the old glue has to be removed first you cannot reglue glue.

i am not siding with the new owners just stating facts

i am on my third checkmate and i will buy another one again

Guys,

My letter went out last night. I also called Kip Combs to let him know what I wanted and to expect my letter. Doug Smith should have it by Wednesday.

I asked for reimbursement for the repair. The boat is going into a local shop this week.

Thanks for your support!!!

Joe

It will be interesting to see if you get warranty. We'll be watching this thread to see what happens. I also had the opportunity to buy a Checkmate from the factory, as I have no dealers close. I didn't end up doing it, one of the reasons was the distance I'd have to tow the boat back to the factory for warranty work (if any was needed).

Now the company is under new ownership, but more importantly, a new business name. I think when one business sells and the new business is a totally new company, the old warranties don't hold. I think that BRP did warranty the Johnson/Evinrude motors though. Very good of them. I have to believe that the CMate factory will warranty the boats sold in the last couple years.

If my headliner fell down, I'd tow it back to Bucyrus and let them fix it. Or better yet, I'd get rid of the headliner all together. None of my boats had one, and they all fall down eventually anyway...........

it was not an issue of checkmate fixing the boat

the issue was timing

ya'll are getting mad at checkmate for the owner of the boat not wanting to be put out this spring

at best it is only a 3 or 4 hour repair

if he had gone through a dealer in his area i am sure they would have been willing to get it done for him

i agree with jw if you are going to bypass the dealer network there are other prices to pay

there is no way a dealer can compete with the factory on price so service is what you pay the difference for

if the warranty period was to be extended then it should have been in writing.

it will be interesting to follow this

i have been in a new or used car dealer (family) most of my life

i hope they can come to an agreement
