Headliner repair (Warranty Coverage Thread)

So lets see some pictures of the boat, and the cracks.

Kip has the pictures they were sent from Dave @ lake and trail and kip or mike never responded to him and then checkmate sent Lake and Trail a letter saying they are not a dealer any more because they haven't ordered anything. Also I bought this boat in Jun 2007 brand new from Lake and Trail! So has i am and Lake and Trail this boat was purchased NEW!! so I should have warranty.

The old Checkmate warranty used to be (as I remember it), one year bow to stern, and 10 years on the hull itself. I believe the warranty was transferrable to one subsequent owner.

The warranty on the hull was actually increased from five to ten years in the mid 90's, again, from what I remember. I'll try to look through my brochures when I get home and see if I can figure out in what model year the warranty was improved.

From what I'm reading here via third party reports...

It would seem (to me at least) that the argument being put forth here by the new ownership, is that all the warranties from the Comb's era of Checkmate are NOT the responsibility of Doug Smith or Checkmate Marine. And I would assume the legal basis for this position is, that Checkmate Marine only purchased the assets of the old Checkmate and it is therefore a separate corporation and legal entity.

Perhaps I've got it all wrong I dunno...

So if that's the case, (I would guess) if you own a "Checkmate Marine, Doug Smith era" Checkmate, you're covered by the new company's warranty. If you own a Comb's era Checkmate, than you're not covered by a warranty - or at least by one that Doug Smith and Checkmate Marine are responsible for.

So it would seem that Smith is taking the position that anything Checkmate Marine does is on a "good-will-gesture" basis only, but have no legal responsibility to do so.

Perhaps I'm off track, but that seems to be what I'm reading.

Some kind of official company statement by one or both of the parties of Checkmate Marine and the old Checkmate company might be in order here.

People deserve to know the true facts and they should hear them first hand.

You are right Chris! Doug is respossible for his own boats (I see the point) why would he pay to fix somebody else's work? I'll call Dave. Y at lake and Trail tomorrow and get him to post the pictures and he can put his 2 cents in has a dealer.

You can defend (CHECKMATE MARINE) if you want, but the way I see it.They handled this poorly.I work in service and I know the need to put these small fires out in a hurry before this happens. You can't make every customer happy, but you should at least try. When its all said and done word of mouth can kill a company. You can do a million good things and nobody notices, but screw up once and the world will know.I don't recommend telling customers to pound sand it's not to good for business:sssh:

I second that. A Headliner cost is much easier to swallow than letting this
problem go on like this.

you know...all the B/S aside from a warranty standpoint.....it's the right thing to do ! plain and simple !!! I run my own business's now for over 20 years and sometimes you just need to do the right thing....the bad taste left in many mouths will haunt you to no end...

I understand that by Doug buying Checkmate he only will warranty boats he has buildt since he took ownership...he wouldn't want to get sued for someone else's work. If a transom were to break or some other problem on a boat that was made previous to his buying the company, it's out of his control. Why would he pay for something he had no control over. He should not have too. My question is...what about those who bought 2006 and under if they have a 10year warranty on a hull (and as a customer, I bought the warranty) will Mr Combs back it up his product? I'm guessing no why should he ... he has his money and retired! My brand new 2006 Checkmate has huge cracks in the transom and i have to chase Mr. Combs down to see if he will pay for it? lol this will be fun!
and by the way Doug Smith WILL NOT WARRANT ANY 2006, 2005 and older i have talked to him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is that the black/blue pulsare 2000 w/250 hp from lake and trail???
