HELP, Need Max Speed by Tomorrow

Member
I have a Lond Bow 1998 Pulsare with a 225 Merc EFI, 6" jack plate ajusted almost all the way up and I'm running a 25" Tempest Plus. At max speed the boat will run over 80 (at 5800 RPM) but I haven't ran with a GPS yet. I've been talking with the guys at work with the Bass Boats and they don't think the boat is very fast, so today I made a handsshake bet of $100.00 that it will run over 70mph. These guys are running bass boats 18-20ft with 200 MECRS. Tomorrow we are taking it out with a GPS. Any tricks to gain a mile an hour or so? (removing anything for weight??) I want to make sure it really shows the fisherman up!! Thanks

Well I wouldn't go out with a full tank of Gas. 70 MPH sounds about right because JW ran about 70 in his, so it should be close. If you take a passenger it might help to have them sit on the back seat. It does in mine. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Pffff

70, jw had the promax and solid mounds, 70 is hard to get if you dont know how to drive the boat, let jw do the run than you are sure that you get the 100 buks

The tank is reading between 1/2 and 3/4 now. I just put a fresh coat of wax on the last half of the hull hoping to slick it up a bit. I took out my spare stainless prop under the back seat and thought about taking out the cover for the ski storage since it is up in the front and feels like it is around 15lbs or so, but I left it. I will probalby have a passenger but I noticed if I'm in the boat by myself it tends to chine walk. If there is someone in the passenger seat it rides real smooth on top end. Will the chine walk hurt the speed and any other ideas? Thanks!

JW also had a bowrider with a cover for the front. Typically I think the long decks are still a bit faster. But he also had a promax, so like I said, it will probably be close. But good luck regardless!

Yep, all of the above. Get all the weight out. Anchor and anything else thats not tied down.
Run the gas out till your down to 1/4 tank or so.
Now for the speed trick. Get the wax off the bottom of the back half of the boat. THis will slow you down. Take some 220 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the pad going forward and back.
This will help the hull unstick from the water.
Chine will slow the boat down a bit, but can be driven threw with practice. JW was getting 72-73 with his boat. 10" of set back. Ran great.
Good luck to you.

Well, I'm a $100.00 richer. The guy forgot the GPS and wanted to wait until tomorrow but I got a hold of a guy with a new Radar Gun That races Motocycles. We got out there after sundown and it was getting hard to see. I didn't get the gas ran down(it was reading between 1/2 and 3/4), and we wheren't on the part of the lake with long staight runs, but my first pass I ran 72mph on radar and bouncing from 78-80+ on the speedo. My second pass they said they couldn't read the radar gun because of the darkness but the speedo was steady over 80. I want to take it back out in a few days with the gas ran down and on a long stretch and see the max speed, but thats just for myself. The important thing is that I ran over 70mph and won the bet. Thanks for the imput. I'll let you know what is does the next time out with less gas!

YOU GUY ARE GETTING ME ALL EXCITED. I PURCHASED MY 2100 PULSARE LONG DECK LAST MONTH AND AM IN THE PROCESS OF SELLING MY SPECTRA SO I CAN PURCHASE A MOTOR FOR THE PULSARE. KEEP POSTING YOUR SPEED NUMBERS. I WAS ALSO THINKING ABOUT A MID 90'S 225 PROMAX, HOWEVER I JUST MIGHT GO ALL OUR AND GET A NEW 2.5EFI WITH A 20" MID.

Best motors for the Pulsare are the heavy ones. Go for a 250 or 300 3.0 liter, the Pulsare loves the transom weight. My 1995 Promax 2.5 225 horse with a 23" Tempest went to 73.5 mph on GPS at 6500 rpms with the bow cover installed and 10" of setback. I was always wishing for a 3 liter 225 or 250 (better yet, a 300X!) I've always been a Merc man, but that new Yamaha 300 HDPI is very nice.........

You were running 6500 RPM? You know I'm runnig the 225EFI. Isn't max RPM 6000. Does the Promax have a higher RPM? I'm going to try totake mine out by this weekend and see how it runs on GPS. How far can I push the motor safely?

Be careful! Don't over rev that sucker, nothing ruins your day more than a blown mota!

I sometimes check this page for maximum RPM's. But I'm not too sure how accurate it is, and they also don't always mention the years of the motors. I would get a definitive answer from Merc or a good technician with the proper answer to avoid going over the red line.

Anyway, here is that link for what it's worth.

Thanks for the site. It says 5000-5800. I'm runnig 5800 now. I've got a buddy runnig a 250 that told me to move up to a bigger prop to keep it around 5500. He suggested a Tempest 27". What do you think. My motor is a 1999 with around 95 hours. Thanks

I BOUGHT A 1995 MERC 225 EFI (XRI) FOR MY PULSARE. SHOULD HAVE IT RIGGED BY MONDAY AND HOPEFULLY IN THE WATER BY FRIDAY!!! SHOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT KIND OF SPEED NUMBERS BY 3.0 BLOCK WILL DO COMPARED TO ALL THE 225 PROMAX PULSARES.

What kind of prop are you going to run? Do you have a jackplate on it? Good luck and keep us posted. I should be able to get out on the water this weekend and see how mine will run on GPS and less fuel.

I'M RUNNING A BOB'S HYDRAULIC JACK PLATE WITH 5.5" OF SETBACK. I'M ALSO INSTALLING SPAECERS BETWEEN THE MOTOR AND JACKPLATE FOR A TWOFOLD PURPOSE; MORE SETBACK AND MY FRONT STEERING RAM WON'T HIT THE HULL WHEN TRIMMED UP!! PROP REMAINS UNKNOWN. I HAVE A THREE BLADE STAINLESS THAT HAS BEEN REWORKED. SAT IN MY GARAGE FOR YEARS. I NEED TO HAVE A PROP SHOP PUT A PITCH METER ON IT. IT DOES LOOK TO BE ABOUT A 26 OR 27.

Hey guys..

Keep in mind that that is the factory recommended "CONSERVITIVE" rpm range... mainly so warrentee can be issued and idiots don't blow them up by running wide open all day long. Most stock motors will spin 500 more than stock (as long as its short peroids of time) with no "real" concern but a few things to consider:

#1. Stock motor power bands tend to drop off after the top "recommended" RPM range... so modified motors (reeds, velocity stacks, tuners, relieved exhausts, etc.) can pull more RPM and make more power. We all know that more power and more RPM equals more speed!

#2. Stock oil injection can get a bit scary going high rpm...I don't trust and notice that ALL factory race motors run pre-mix at 40:1 with good oil for a reason. If you plan on running it hard or at higher than stock RPM...loose the injection and pre-mix!

3. Some of the newer motors (mainly EFI) have factory rev limiters built in...you can't over-rev it!

Given that, I wouldn't be afraid to run past that max recommended RPM a little bit as long as the motor is in good shape... 99% of outboard "blow-ups" are from overheating, oil injection failing, or fuel ratio running too lean...RARELY ever RPM related!!! Jim.

I'll keep you posted on the GPS speed when I can get to the lake. We have had alot of rain the last week. The lake has gone up 10ft and there is submerged log warnings. I'm going to stay off the lake for a couple of weeks. I hit a submerged log in my 14ft mate about 13-14 yrs ago and I don't want to take a chance with the pulsare.
