Help with 115 Evinrude

I had a problem like that before and it was a defective spark plug.I would check every thing as Jim says also.

Up underneath the flywheel is the stator and underneath it is the timer/trigger. I think Johnson/Evinrude calls it the timer. Does your motor have one power pack . The timer gets a signal from a magnet attached to the center of the flywheel as it rotates to cause the power pack to send a signal to the correct coil at the correct time to produce a spark. The stator is under there too and uses magnets attached to the outer underside of the flywheel to produce power for the ignition system and also for the charging system. These magnets can not be loose or cracked or missing pieces. look at the wires from the timer to make sure they have not become bare and are making contact to ground. The ignition system produces some pretty high voltage even at cranking speed, like 150 volts or more at the orange wires from the power pack while connected to the coils. What plugs are installed and what are they gapped at?

Hi. Two power.packs. Plugs are the champions the marine store gave me for it. I didn't set gap. Just visually made sure all four plugs were the same.

I am going to get new plugs tomorrow to see if that helps and rule them out.

How do the plugs look? take a picture and post them up with the cyl. number each came out of. whats the plug number?

Somewhere In the outback of my thoughts, I seem to remember that these motors were sensitive to having the Manufacturers recommended plug gapped at the recommended specs?

:thumb:on the hole in question....check the mounting area for the coil and make sure the ground is good and clean!Where the coil mounts.

Okay, plugs in use are QL77JC4.

In order from left to right:
Bottom Port
Top Port
Top Starboard
Bottom Starboard

Looks like top starboard is reading the most lean, and it is the only I am having issues with.

These plugs have been run six or seven times out. So about three hours on them.

Thoughts?

Just checked it all over. It is very clean. Good contact. I went out again just now and played with it. Still top starboard cyl shutting down after about ten minutes. I swapped the plug and wire from the bottom to the top and vice versa. The top still wouldn't fire the timing light with the known good plug/wire.

I checked all the wiring that feeds the power pack, wiggled it around and stuff and the top still did nothing.

More ideas? I really appreciate all the help guys. :)

where the power pack wires connect on the junction block (theres ring connectors) take one screw out at a time and clean or replce connectors. one at a time so you dont get them mixed up...good luck!

I am not sure what you mean. The power pack has two wires which each go to a coil. One top, on bottom. It also has two harness wires that plug in to other harness plugs on the outboard. Also one wire which grounds to one of the mounting bolts. I do t see anything with ring terminals.

Yes it runs fantastic for the first ten minutes. The like a light switch the one hole shuts off. If I idle for a bit, it turns back on. It's like an immediate change. As if it were on a switch and someone flicked it on and off.

The thing that looks like a bus bar? What you said makes perfect sense now. Thank you! So what is that thing? Do the wires from the timer go to this first and then the coil? I will check it out in the next hour.

Thank you very much for the suggestion

yes a buss bar.. be sure to disconect battery first! do one at a time till all is good and clean. the ground wire on the mount may be an add on. Bill Gore here on the forum is very knowlegeable about these engines..You may want to pick his brain also!
