Just bought a 1979 Checkmate Predictor

CheckmateSpeed

New member
Hey everyone this is my first post here. Im from Georgia and will probably have it on Lake Lanier.

This forum looks like just what i need because i m a member at zr2usa.com and the guys there are great.

Anyways i just bought a 1979 Checkmate Predictor for 200 bucks, The guy installed a merc 150 in place of the 125 that the dash plate says it has. I took it to my boat shop and they are working on getting the motor running for me. It does need a new deck but thats nothing. As far a uphostery im going to leave the original stuff and just rewrap everything in newer marine vynle. new carpet ect.

It is the same as the middle picture here even the same color:cheers.

Do you guys have an estimate of what mph i can hit with a 150merc on the back of this boat skeetin over some glass?

:welcome: I would say 65 to 70 G.P.S. no problem. 83PREDICTOR has a similar setup.Keep us posted on your progress.:bigthumb:

Welcome to the board. Your going to have a good time with the new boat. With some set-up you should be able to get close to 70 mph.

A new deck is nothing? hahaha... What do you mean? you need a NEW deck or the deck needs some touch up? A new deck would be a pretty big deal.
Do you have a 150 v6 or inline 6? Should be a good setup w/ either

Hey Man !........ I just bought a 1979 Checkmate as well. It is a 21 foot entertainer I think. Bow Rider. It has a nice running 235 johnson on it and new floor and perfect transom. Enterior is good. The jel coat is shot but it is a 79........ !

Anyway, I paid 1500 for her. Boat motor and trailer. Got her from a shop going out of business on Lanier. I live in Dawson County. I am working on a couple of projects to get some more ramps open on Lanier. One will probably be open next month at Charleston Park.

Most of the other guys here are north of us so we will not have a lot of company on Lanier.

Winter is the best time on the lake because no one is out here and that is especially true this year with record low water.

Hope to see you on the water, Kurt

I know that exit 16 is still launchin because a bass ficher told me. Thats Tidwell park off pilgrim mill road.

I am hoping to be out this weekend

as far as the deck is concern i have done a few in my day even though im 22. just a sheet of PT plywood and some glass... no big deal.

I am assuming the "deck" he is refering to, is what most refer to as the floor?

What ever you are redoing....Good Luck!

79's Unite:cheers I have a 79 trimate 2 needs a new floor and mine is also getting the 140 i6 gone through I got mine for $400. I just wish that 79 flyer had a picture of my boat.

Yes The tidwell ramp is open for now. . It sux pretty bad though and only has a foot to go before it is cloosed. And sense it is the only one of two ramps on the entire 690 miles of shore line open on Lanier, it can get crouded on weekends when the striper fishing is hot. Anyway, check the Hammonds Fishing web site for updates on the progresson extending the ramp at Charleston Park. If the water dropes any more that will be our only option ..kurt

Why don't you try taking your boat down to the old Highway 53 just over the bridge in Gainesville, right next to Martin Boat Docks? I work at Bolling Bridge Marine and that's where I launch my boats. Heard about Charleston, Hammond's bait and tackle is trying to raise money to reopen it. Tidwell should be open if we just get a little more rain.... Glad to hear about more checkmate guys in Georgia. Just purchased a V-mate 1 and am currently rebuilding an Evinrude Hustler for it. Thinking of purchasing two more boats which are "projects" a Eluder and Tri-mate.

Thanks for all the replies guy and yes it is awesome to have a few checkmate in the water at lanier.

Hopefully mine will be out of the shop for this weekend for its maiden voyage.

Maybe we can all get together and rideout on that lanier glass we have now.

and deck = floor and it isnt hard at all. if you need advice let me know and i can spit fom tips out to you.

Oh and i drive a BlaZeR2 4x4 and if worst come to worst then ill pop it in 4Lo and launch anywhere :sssh: :D.

Im looking forward to seeing some of you on Lanier this summer or even this winter because i know ill be out there cruisin.

Oh and i live in Alpharetta

Hey Hemi... are you a mechanic at Bolling Bridge? I have gotten busy and don't have time to work on my Mate and I want to get a few things done. I have been taking my boats to 1st Mate on hwy 306. Pretty good guys there..........

The Charleston ramp extension is under way. Hammonds web site has some photos of the work.

Are you launching on the old hwy 53 road bed?

Thanks, Kurt in Dawsonville......

Hey hmbuilt,

First mate is where I bought my V-mate! Bobby and the crew are great people! I used to be a mechanic down in Buford, I still do some things on the side. I'm the service manager at Bolling Bridge now. Love to see the boat. Also would like some of us get together on Lanier, would be pretty cool.:thumb:

Yeah I think the old hwy 53 is the way to go, if Martin Docks can still launch their work barges there, it should be ok, just be carefull out there, God only knows what kind of obstacles have appeared in the lake.

THANKS for all the replies guys.

My boat currently has a 19 pitch prop do you think i shoud upgrade to a 4 blade 20 or 21 pitch prop? to achieve my 70 mph goal?

Just got word from LANIER MARINE LIQUIDATORS that the Checkmate is up and running. going to scoop her up around 4:45 today
