Maine Trailer Reg

This was brought up a few months ago but the thread didn't go anywhere. NY gave me a hard time trying to reg the trailer that came with my Liner so I just put the plate from my other boat trailer on it for the summer but now my other trailers are up for renewal at the end of the month and I'm going to give the Maine reg deal a shot. 5 years for any trailer is $90 through the site I'm going to use and NY wants almost that much for just one year on my big trailer. Its legal to do as long as you travel interstate with the trailer which I can do by driving 5 miles down the road in NJ. I'm going to send off the paperwork for the snowmobile trailer this weekend and will post the results here. I'm tired of getting screwed by the state as they have jacked their fees way up in the past year to cover the budget gaps so this might be an answer. If nothing else, I won't have to worry about the reg for 5 years and that alone is worth it. By the way, it is relatively easy to reg a trailer with lost or missing paperwork as well, NY wouldn't let me reg the boat trailer because I gave them an old title by accident and it didn't have the last owner's name on it. They basically would have said yes if I hadn't provided them with a title. :brickwall:

It's easy in ohio, no titles necc. if you don't have a current reg. then all you need to do is take it across a scale and get a weight slip for them to establish pricing.
 
Not here Dave. In NY if its over 1000lbs empty it needs a title like a car, if its under it gets a transferable registration. If you don't have the papers for a light one you have to fill out a couple of forms one of which needs to be signed by the seller explaining why they have no proof of ownership. Then you've gotta go in with a picture of the VIN and those papers. The seller of my boat filled out the papers and gave me the trailer title that the original owner signed over to the guy he got it from. All the numbers matched but since the trailer was never signed to the guy I bought it from they said they couldn't do it. The lady flat out told me that if I hadn't given her the title she could have done it. That was the last straw for me. Papers for the two snowmobile trailers are going out today and in the spring the jetski and boat trailers will be done.
 
man they really bend you over in NY! here in MN we can purchase lifetime registration for trailers at a fair price. i can't remember how much my last boat trailer was but my homemade 10'x6' utility trailer was only $100. now if they would just do the same for boats, cars, etc........
 
A BIG, FAT, F*#K YOU to NY and their outrageous fees:

I believe this year it would have been about $100 for my enclosed for one year and about $40 for my little 8x8 open for one year. I got those two plates in the mail today, $142.50 for the pair for 5 years reg and I didn't even have to leave my house except to put a check in the mailbox.

The people at MBI Trailer have my business from here on out.

Its not right to do, but I have the same tag for both my trailers(ski's and boat). There both load rite trailers so I should be ok. Just trying to save a little money and time lol. I use them so little screw the state.
 
We pay $48.00 a year here for all trailers, don't matter if it's a 8' utility trailer or a 30' camper, if you can't read the serial # on the trailer or have a title they just give you a new one to stick on.
 
Is it legl to register your trailer in a state where you don't reside? Did you give them an address for someone in maine or your ny address?
 
Dave, I gave them my NY address and according to the sites I've looked at it is legal as long as you travel interstate with it. Pretty much every time I use a trailer its going to cross state lines, NJ is less than 5 miles away and there's no riding for the quads in NY anywhere near me. The sites mentioned that Maine is like the #2 state for trailer registrations because its cheap and easy to do and if you look you'll notice that a lot of semi trailers are registered there.

John, if you lose the papers for a smaller trailer or the VIN gets worn off you can go through the process of registering it as homemade. If its a bigger one its pretty much impossible in NY.

Keith, I do the same thing, especially when I had my old boat since the VIN was worn off of that trailer . I was even going to have a buddy that does vinyl make up a "Karavan" sticker for the boat trailer so it'd really look convincing but that trailer is gone.
