gslingers boat is a 1997 ZT-280...I believe he's running a 7.4 mag.. but we'll let Greg give everyone a description of this one of a kind Checkmate. By the way Greg.. are you still doing the Ozarks in July? We may do the PRA run in Chicago over the 4th... keep in touch!

That boat makes it into my Elite Club of awesome boats with such members as JW's Pulsare... I love the graphics it has. You must e-mail the boat/motor/prop/speed/GPS-Speedo specs at Chris.Ellard9@sympatico.ca

Checkmates may not be the fastest boats on the water, but they are the nicest looking!

I'm running a 454 mag with 22 bravo 1 wot 65mph.
This spring I'm going to a couple of minor things to the motor to pep it alittle. My brother-in-law is a mercruiser tech. Rick, we decided to go over memorial weekend to the ozarks. So we will be heading to Chicago most likely over the fourth and going to milwaukee for the boat races in August. If some of you have never been to the lake of the ozark, it's a must go!!!! It is mardi gras on the water on the weekend and awesome boating during the week. There are ton's of cool bars and resturants to go to in boat. Party cove is like watching "Girls Gone Wild" in front of your face.

gslinger, is that the 385hp motor you have and is that 65 on gps or speedo. I am putting 320 ponies in my 240 and was told I should expect to get 65 on gps out of her. What do you plan to do to the motor? Next winter, when my warranty is over, i plan on putting a pro charger on. Also, I am going with silent choice, so I am running the exhaust open, i should not have any restrictions.

Yes it is 385hp. I'm just doing little thing like K&n flame arrestor, carb spacer, stub stack, getting my prop labbed, putting vents on, running mobil 1. These were all suggestions from a tech who works for mercruiser performance. I'm looking to do too much to the motor since my brother bought a boat bigger than mine so I will probably be upsizing either the end of this summer or next.
70 is speedo and my speedo is off by about 5 so it will run about 65 early season and 61/62 late summer. 62 is gps. From the hand full of people that I have talked to at mercury I should gain about 5-6 mph. The problem with my boat not haveing vents is I'm not getting enough air to the motor, so when it gets warm up here I lose some performance. You will love the zt hull The ride is awesome and solid.

I agree about the vents, I wonder how C-mate gets away without venting the bilge area. This is a dumb question, but I thought the 454 mag was EFI, am I wrong? The reason why I asked is because you mentioned the carb spacer.
Are you going to upsize to another C-mate?

Thanks for the info gslinger... It is now up in the top speed threads... Also, Thanks for asking GPS or Speedo for me, it makes my life alot easier when someone helps me along the way...

there is a vent at the rear, but there are 2 problems with this 1) the blower hose run to this vent and 2) the vent curls downward so you are not getting air in unless your driving backwards! I think that my top speed go down and handle the waves might be tough! I have talked to checkmate about it and the basically told the more air I can get down there the better(aka poor design on their behalf) I'm going to take a look at what Rick has to offer and if I don't think that it will work I will have some fabricated by friend of my brother in law. As far as what I will step into for my next boat not sure. I'm going to keep my options open. I really like the AT 32, my wife wants to take a look at a sonic. But Rick might give me a hell of a deal checkmate and that will be my next boat.

If you took a rest

We'd all get lost around here. Half of us wouldn't have a clue about any unknown boats... You should get payed to work here... LOL

Chris pays the bills for us to post here. That sounds weird on his part but it is well worth it. And if Chris was real real desperate and couldn't pay for the site, we, as good citizens would help him, I think... Thanks for a great forum Chris!!!!

No offence to Checkmate, but that is just dumb, everyone knows an enginge has to breathe to produce power.

Who knows what happened then...

I am glad my 240 wil have side vents, I am trying to come up with a way to get more air in too, although it is tough to come up with too many ideas until I see the boat.

I just went on checkmate website and it looks like the new zt280 has the same deck as the zt260 that I looked at at Rick's place. The took the curve out and made the edges a little sharper to accomadate the vents. My boat doesn't have a windsheild either. I thought about a new hatch on, but the wife put a end to getting rid of her sunpad!

Sounds like a great candidate for a good old-fashioned high-rise tunnel ram...............
So you lose the center of the hatch/sunpad area, you gain a really wicked looking scoop!!

1995 2100BR/1995 225 Promax/23" Tempest

But than she can only invite on friend along to lay out on the sunpad in bikini. because I have a bikini rule: If your female and on our boat you have to wear a bikini(and be able to wear a bikini, you know what I'm talking about)

I just came back from Checkmate on Friday Morning ( I could have wrote a movie about the trip home) and we talked about the vent problem with Mike, Bill, and Kip.. It looks like it can still be done. The 2003 280 has almost the same deck as the new 260.. it will be a little harder to do the vents on the 1997.. but we'll look at it if you'd like, Drez feels it shouldn't be a problem.
