Need Advice - Boat Seller screwing me over

[/QUOTE]
Anthony

I think I found a comparable boat for you in the same price range. The dealer is very reputable and this boat though it's a cuddy has second home status as far as a tax deduction. I thought it was worth looking into.

Description/ConditionPlease let us know that you found this boat on boats.com!

Nice cuddy cabin with cockpit cover and bimini top. Sleek blue hull, and fuel injected 240HP V8. This is a nice boat for a family or for extended weekends on the water.

The Stingray 220 CS has what it takes to provide a great day on the water, followed by a restful night. The cabin has a plush V-berth and dual seats that can be transformed to make the berth even larger. Twin screened portholes complement the large overhead hatch to provide natural light and ventilation, while the bi-fold doors with their smoked Lexan inserts provide outstanding access. Cleverly concealed, yet readily accessible, are a molded-in sink, butane stove and portable toilet. This added equipment can qualify the 220 CS for second home tax status. The 220 CS's large integrated swim platform, with its three-step stainless steel ladder and convenient grab handles, makes it easy to participate in a variety of watersports. The boat's extra deep interior protects its occupants from wind and spray and provides plenty of room for passengers to move about freely.

Thanks for looking into that Check! Looks like a great boat, but we need a BR. I'm not going to do anything rash here. Just look at some pics and call the state to see what the title status / history is. I think the title will tell the story.

I live here in the St Louis area and am VERY familar with the area so I can help ya out with where it is exactly, or even maybee run by and take a look at it, Im not doing much anyway with slow work now anyway

But in the sellers defence, Iv been in the same situation before , Need some money real bad and real quick, so up for sale something goes and get a "potentual" buyer that wants to wait to pay for it later in the meantime many other folks call and say that they will buy it now, and of corse I need the money ASAP for the checking account dosen't wait on automatic withdraws. So I can understand what kind of situation the seller is in.
As far as two guys setteling on a price over the phone,,, that dont mean "leagle binding" what so ever, maybee 80 years ago when a hand shake was good enough for a home loan,
Just like when someone calls and says they will be here tomorrow about 6:00 pm to buy the motorcycle, if someone calls and wants to come out at 1:00 pm and buy it, "come on out!!" It's not sold untill
CASH IS IN HAND

Put yourself in his posision, If he were to "HOLD" the boat for 3 weeks and tell all of the other callers that the boat is sold and pass up all of thoes buyers and then you change your mind about the boat 3 weeks later. then he has just wasted 3 weeks of his time and said that the boat is sold to a bunch of other buyers that might be right here in the St Louis area with cash in hand and can buy it the same day

and just because he is selling a few used cars dosen't mean ANYTHING at all

Have to agree with these guys, and IMO not sure what the draw on the stingray is anyways, looks like every other boat on the lake, goin from your liner to that is like steppin from a corvette into an astro van :poke:

I have to put a a bit of blame on Needafunboat also. Being I buy an sell on the side. I cant stand when somebody tries to talk my price down on the phone especially when they have never seen what I am selling in person.

Agreeing on a price before hand without personal inspection is asking to get burnt. Cash in hand person to person is the only way to deal.

The deal I've done without seeing the boat before hand was my 21SB. It was a REALLY far drive, though. The guy was straight up, honest and a pleasure to deal with. After talking some on the phone, I had no doubt that it was going to be everything he said it was. I just had a good feeling about the guy. When I got there the boat was in just as good shape as I expected. That was a relief after a drive like that! Alot of trust went into that deal...

Also, I did negoatiate the price on my 24 before hand, it was a very far drive, too. Lots of discussion over the phone and alot of pictures were sent... It was far enough that I wasn't going to bother if I couldn't get a price worked out.

I agree that being in person and seeing is way better to negotiate, but in those two cases it did work out. I think thats more the exception than the rule, though.

Well I don't call it talking a guy down over the phone but I always ask what a guys bottom price is over the phone before I look. Some people are very inexpierenced in selling stuff and list 1-2000 higher (on a 5000 item) then they want thinking they will be talked down. If a guy says I want my asking price thats OK, I just figured out if thats what I'm willing to pay if it's as good as he says before I drive out.

Once your in a new ZT you would have a tough time knowing whether you needed a Key or that paddle:(

When I bought the playmate I talked cash price over the phone, pending inspection and water run. Guy was hurting for money and space so that $4500 playmate was brought home for $2500. Upon inspection, it was 100% as described and still chat with the guy from time to time.

When I bought the enchanter, I could not water test because it had bad exhaust manifolds on it. I did dry fire it for a second and it started with ease and sounded good. Wish I would have walked away from it but I have learned a lot from it and about the boats because. Guy was a boat dealer and totally lied about everything about it down to the cracked engine block and salt water usage.

I go about it with "whats your bottom dollar?" or "I got cash money, will you deal?". If they don't want to deal then I walk away because they don't want to sell it. If its that good of a price then I don't even bring up money till I am there.

Anthony, Back to the boat, I would walk away from it. It is such a buyers market and the guy has dicked you around. Nothing worse than having to drive all that way to find out its not what he said it was. A title search will not show anything but who has owned it. If it sank at one time and was not turned into the insurance, there would be no branding of the title and you would never know till it was to late. Lots of boats have sunk, been brought up and dried out to fire up and run again. Problems arising down the road.......or water that is.

Hi Guys,

I was actually hoping this thread would die out, but you guys are too helpful! (no sarcasm).

I was totally po'd when the guy sent that one email to me. Since then I have talked to him quite a bit, he has sent detailed pics and the hull and trailer vin #'s. I don't think this guy is any better/worse than the average stranger. I am also sure he's gotten a lot of inquires on that boat. I'm not the only sucker around (or on this forum) who would offer him that money for the boat. He knows I'm going to run the boat and bad compression or soft spots are deal breakers - I'm not coming off as an overly easy buyer.

A title history will confirm what he said - that he is the first owner of the boat - that's important (to me) because then you are at least one step closer to knowing how that motor was maintained and the boat was used. You never really know on a used boat, but one owner is a good thing no matter how you cut it.

I realize it's a buyer's market, but I'd welcome some listings of 22' - 24' open bow boats with a performance oreinted hull and a big block (this one is a mag MPI with drive shower and torpedo B1). Again - no sarcasm, I just don't think there are many out there in reasonable condition for ~$10K. So I do think this is a good enough deal to make the drive for. I'm going to check it out closely and will have no problem coming home empty handed from 18 hrs of driving.

I also realize all of the posts are well meaning so I don't mean to come off like an ingrate - I do honestly appreciate all of the concern!

Thanks,
Anthony

For what it's worth...

...when I sold my Pulse, I listed on here and Craigslist. Started at $15,000 and then dropped down to $12,500. When the eventual buyer called and wanted to test drive I told them up front that test rides were fine, but advised them not to show up if they weren't willing to pay the asking price of $12,500. They said that was fine as long as the boat delivered. They showed up, I took all three of them for a ride and let the DD drive the boat. They already had a cashiers check for $12,500 in their pocket and the deal was done.

I think the most important thing in the whole deal was my willingness as a seller to be totally transparent, up front and honest. Honesty and integrity are paramount. I wish more people operated that way.

i dunno, if i were you, i'd run like mexican water through a first-time tourist. there are plenty of boats out there.

???????

Man I'm with Chris E ! I've been on so many long distance runs to look at cars and boats that I've talked to the people tons of times, explaining I know what to look for when I get there and they tell me on the phone oh no those things are perfect, etc. I even had one guy send me over a dozen actual photos he said was taken a week ago from when I talked to him ! HAH !! We drove 14 hours to look at some piece of you know what. The pictures where either when he bought it or from who he bought it from. Just beware! If he had that many offers the boat would be gone. Cash talks, BS walks !
