Powder Coating a trailer

Sam I am

Well-known member
Well...it's almost January so it's about that time for my annual daydream about all the stuff I'm going to do to the Liner so I'll never sell it. Any idea what the cost of powdercoating a boat trailer would be? We have several places in Fargo that specialize in both sand blasting and powdercoating. I'm getting quotes, but thought i would compare to a national average as well if anyone has any data points, please share.

I also found a place in IA that makes boat dollies...I can fit the Liner in my garage if it's not on the trailer.

Looks like I'll be getting a nice bonus this spring...perhaps a new factory interior is in the stars?

How about having the trailer sandblasted then sprayed with Hercules bedliner. You'll never have to worry about rust again. Your Ranger trailer should have that now, think they call it Road Armour.

I'm getting quotes for both. I just pulled the trigger on two boat dollies. Guess I'm committing. If nothing else I can always sell the boat dollies. The dollies will make wet sanding the hull a lot easier. I'll update with my price quotes for the trailer.

Well...here's a few data points from over the phone quotes. These are CYA sight unseen quotes. I emailed pics to all of them to see if the price will come down.

Powdercoat #1: $900-$1,500 includes all sandblasting and powder coating. Very nice business with huge booths and ovens for handling big AG equipment. The range is dependent on whether two coats would be needed. I told him the trailer is going to sit A LOT...not a lot of use or blasting down gravel roads...in and out of the water a few times per year at most. He said 1 coat would do it just fine then...so a lot closer to the $900 end. 1 stop shop...nice.

Powdercoat #2: $600-$800 includes all sand blasting and powder coating. Big booths and big ovens. I checked out his website and he has a pretty slick media blasting booth that saves approximately 75% of the media costs by recycling...as a result he only charges $100/hr for custom sandblasting if he's powder coating the piece too. Otherwise $150 per hour for sandblasting. He does a lot of unique stuff like race car tube frames, harley frames, huge ag implements, trailers. Once again, a 1 stop shop...nice.

Edit: Powdercoat #2 just gaurenteed his price under $800 and will try to get it down further, but depends on the blasting and how easy the old liquid paint comes off.

Line-X #1: $1000 to just spray black or $1200 to just spray color and that did not include sandblasting and prep which I would have to coordinate myself...ugh. Not real patient on the phone...clearly making too much money spraying pick up beds for dealerships. Doesn't like messing with unique projects that are budget conscious.

Line-X #2: Wouldn't quote over the phone...small town place...couldn't sand blast...had no idea who to call...bummer.

Looking like powder coat #2 is going to win out.

You can sandblast and spray the liner on trailer yourself as long as your air compressor will keep up. I've got to have my Ranger trailer sandblasted then I'll order the road armour from Ranger and spray it.:thumb:

Update powder coat #1

Powder Coat #1 studied the pics I sent him and revised his quote to $2250! That's a total sand blast and then 2 coats of powder...yikes. Makes me wonder what powder coat #2 is doing...or powder coat #1 just decided to scare me off.

Sounds to me like powdercoater #1 just didn't want to do the job. The powdercoater I use at work quoted me about the same as your #2 for my 253 Trailer. I'm contemplating having it done next summer when I can leave the boat in the water for a week.

If you want to get it off the trailer on land the boat dollies I used under the Starfire are here in the shop. Drive down and pick them up if you're interested.

I appreciate the offer, I might take you up on that. But in the summer, its no biggie to leave it tied up to the dock for a week, other than it being left in the water. It is in front of mom and dads house and they are retired, so it will always be watched. But I might use them next year when I do the motor swap. It would be easier to do with the boat setting lower.

If they're not still here then they will be at Brians. He borrowed them from a marina for me to use and the marina is under new ownership now. ;)

Powder coat won't stop it rusting from the inside out. Put the money toward a newer, aluminum I beam trailer.

I understand what you mean, but my trailer is C-Channel steel, not tubular. As a result, I think the end product should be pretty good and not a waste of money. I redid a tubular trailer about 25 years ago and your right: it doesn't really pay if it's already a rusted out POS.
