Site Updates!

Hi Gang,

Over the next couple of days, I'll be working away at upgrading the forum software as well as a number of pieces of underlying software that we use to run the site.

The updates are pretty extensive and there is A LOT of work involved in this update, so unfortunately I expect there will inevitably be a bit of down time as I get everything updated and fixed up.

We will most likely first open up running our main white theme first and then the other coloured templates will be updated a few days later when everything else is sorted.

During our downtime, I invite you to head over to our sister forum Endless Boating, which has already been upgraded over the last few days. Since I've already been through the update process on EB, I should hopefully be able to minimize some of the hiccups and downtime here.

The newest software introduces a number of new and neat features which I'm sure y'all will like, so the short term pain should result in long term gain. :)

That would explain all the trouble I have getting the site to load sometimes. Thank you for putting the time in to keep this site moving forward!

Hey Papa,

The site updates didn't really have much to do with making the site faster per se. They were more related to adding extra functionality and patching up some security flaws that were discovered in the the software. Hence why I had to work quickly and get both sites updated! :)

If the site is loading slowly for you, best suggestion is run a tracert and see where the bottleneck is. If it's just the odd page loading slowly once in a while, it can sometimes just be a demand blip with the server. If it's something that lasts for a period of time, then let me know the details and I can give you some intructions on how to run a tracert and we'll try to figure out what's going on.

Glad you like the new theme - been working on that project, bit by bit, for a month or two now. I've still got some things left I'd like to do with it, but I figured I'd unleash it to y'all as it's about 95% complete.

I'd like to send out a big thank-you to Doug & Dean and the gang at 'Mate for being kind enough to continue allowing us to use their official logos on the site.

For those of you who prefer the old theme, I've put it in as an optional theme you can select. I've let the old grey and red ones go as I couldn't properly support both a light and dark theme simultaneously.

There might also be the odd situation where people need to select the new theme as the old one may still be showing.

Going forward, this new one will be the main default one though.

Glad you like the new look.

FYI, if you can't see the new theme on the board, you can switch to it using the drop down which is on the left side near the bottom of the board. The new one is listed as "Checkmate 2009".

You can also switch back to the old one there as well, it's listed as "Checkmate - White"
