Spooky ride today.

Here is something to think about. It happened to me years ago in my jet. At first I didn't know what happened, except my Pucker Factor Meter was pegging 1000% and I ended up facing the opposite way I had been running, dead in the water and half full of water!

I was running along into the chop wide open. I hit about three good size rollers and caught some very nice air a couple of times when the engine just stopped dead. With no control what so ever the boat nosed in on a slight angle and when it caught, completely spun the boat around, slinging the ass end of the boat sideways into the chop almost swamping my small Jetmate!

The boat had a good 8 to 10 inches of water in engine compartment and was up into the seating area. Thankfully the engine started right up and I struggled a bit to get her back up on plain. I kept her up on plain until the bilge pump emptied her out, went up near shore, shut her down to try and figure out what had happened.

Everything seemed ok, engine sounded fine, Pump was ok, wiring good. Couldn't figure out why the engine just shut down, no warning, no sputtering, just off it went.

After sitting and pondering for a while I realized that when I restarted the engine the key was in the off position and as you all know we all have some sort of little floatation device attached to our boat key, probably on a small chain. Now all key switches start out by inserting the key in a verticle straight up and down position. The boat runs with the key tilted slightly to the right. What had happened was the ignition switch had some age on it and turned with relative ease. It turned on easily and with the help of several pounding waves and the added weight of the floatation device it turned OFF easily, providing for an unwanted wild ride.

I have since adjusted my ignition switch so that the engine runs with the key straight up and down verticle and off is tilted slightly to the left. It won't happen again!!!

here's a pic of the one I flipped.

John, are those pics of the South Sask river. in Saskatoon? Any issue with rocks on that river. The only boats that run the North Sask in Edm. are jet boats.

Nice Avtar, you going to the game in Calgary? got your mellon and green paint I hope.

Sorry to all you Quebec guys but "Go Riders!!!!!! they got the best fans by far. I'm an Eskie fan normally tho.:(

Yup, those are taken on the river in s'toon, no rocks just sand bars, usually they change location year to year so I just spend a while idleing around looking for them in the spring, I go there every spring because the ice is off a month before the lake.

Not going to Calgary, just having some people over for t-bone and beers

This thread may have saved someone's life!!! Great job guys!!
Exactly Fastcheckmate. I had to look up "Prop Blowout".

We lost a good friend last year some of you may have heard. Although Pat was in a 30' Formula with twin racing IO's, I think blowout may have been a factor in Pats accident as this boat was capable of speeds well in excess of 80 mph. Here's the story below. There are pics at the end of the article.

During a test run of the "Hot Licks Boat" in the Patuxent River near Solomons Island Maryland, at approximately 4:45 p.m., on Sunday October 12th, 2008 an accident occurred.

Pat Reiter was driving, Bobby B on throttles, Passengers, Josh Reithmeyer and Kenneth N. Weisskopf

The boat was traveling up river from Solomons Island and going around Point Patience, #8 red marker, the boat suddenly hooked and went into a barrel roll. This information comes from Josh Reithmeyer and the fisherman that aided in rescuing victims afloat. Cause of the accident is yet unknown. The boat was taken by DNR for investigation.

Josh Reithmeyer was released from the hospital the same evening. Kenneth has a laceration to his leg and is still in the hospital. Bobby B has a lacerated kidney, broken ribs and concussion. Bobby is still in the hospital as well.

The rescue and search started immediately including the Coast Guard, Helicopters, DNR, State Police and went on into the night on Sunday the 12th. http://www.thebaynet.com/news/index.cfm/fa/viewstory/story_ID/10391

here's my experiance with my rig

I had a real bad chine walk with my 16ft 1979 Trimate II , I have a 2.4 that is 240-250hpa 6" CMC Hydrolic jack plate, I have a Britt's Cut Chopper prop that is a 28 pitch at 55-59mph on GPS she would ~ chine walk ~so bad it would just about toss you out of the boat ( even worse when slowing down fast )... I put a ~ Whale Tail~ on the motor and now with the bullet of the lower unit 2.5 in below the keel and trimmed , 1st and only run this year cause of money shortage I ran at 63mph on GPS with 1/2 throttle left and it was a real windy day with ~ White Caps ~ I was running with the stock tack ( need a good aftermarket, was only running 5,000rpm at 63 )

I didn't want to shake the boat apart on the waves
I had luck with the ~ Whale Tail~ on my rig.... maybe it might work on other set-ups and other boats..
( Hope that helps )
