Well-known member
Dear Checkmate Members First I want to Thank all of you Kind Members that took the time to Reply and Clicked Like on my Last two Action Marine Checkmate Story. It is Much Appreciated by Me.

Dear Checkmate Members I am going to Share with all of You My Third Action Marine-Checkmate Hi-performance Story. This Story took place in the summer of 1980 at Woodland lake in Brighton Michigan. There Lived one of my oldest friends from 1968 and long time Action Marine club member Jimmy. Jimmy had bought a 1979 black and sliver 20 ft Checkmate Enchanter with a mercury 200 hp outboard from me. We are still best friends even today 46 years latter. before I begin with this third Checkmate story I want to share a email I got from Jimmy in January 10, 2013 about the last Checkmate story I wrote for all you Checkmate Members here on this Great Checkmate Forum.

I Just got a email from a old friend that goes all the way back to 1968 when I first met Jim and sold him his first boat. I wanted to Share his email with all of you. Always Sammie from Action Marine

Jim did you like my Action Marine Story?

PS You will notice Jimmy's email address starts out vision89, that's because I sold Jimmy a 1989 22 ft Vision with a big block

Yes it sounded like something that you would do, I remember the weekend that you and Your mom spent at my house on the lake and you did the same thing with me, I never chined walked again after that weekend, you also spent some time running down Livingston Channel with me when we were out at Crystal Bay, the thing is that we can look back at all of the cool things that you did with love and friendship, and the distance might be far but the love and friendship is like next door.

Jim

This Checkmate Story took place in the summer of 1980 at Woodland lake in Brighton Michigan were my dear friend Jimmy lived. Jimmy's Checkmate Enchanter had one of my Hi-Performance Set-up's with one of my custom built Hi-Performance Racing props that I built for him. Jimmy's Checkmate Enchanter would run 72-73 mph on our Custom Built Keller Calibrated Racing Speedometer, which was Calibrated within Plus or Minus 1/2 MPH. Jimmy having a year of Driving his Hi-Performance Enchanter had become really good at setting his Enchanter up on the last few inches of its pad and getting the Maximum out of his boat. Jimmy had Won many races on his lake during this past year where he ran most of the time until he ran up against a new neighbor and his new 18 ft Tahiti jet boat. Jimmy was use to winning when he ran up against jet boats with his Enchanter but this Tahiti jet boat was Not the normal running jet boat. This Tahiti jet boat was a one of a kind custom built jet boat with a 800 plus hp, dual Turbo charged big block Chevy in it. This new Neighbor of Jimmy's was Gary, one of the owners of a boat store on Plymouth road called Wonderland marine. Gary had the Tahiti boat company build him this one of a kind custom Tahiti jet boat so he could be king of Woodland lake where he had also bought his new lakefront home. Monday mornings at my Action Marine was not like Monday morning at other boat stores where the store owners hated Mondays because that was the day after the weekend and there was a line up of broken boats out in front of there stores waiting to get repaired. At my Action Marine, my Action Marine Club members that did not run with us on the weekend would call me and tell me of all the races they got into and the fun they had winning most of them. Jimmy always called on Monday telling me of the races that he had won but this Monday he was not singing the same happy tune. He was up-set because this new neighbor of his, with his new Tahiti jet boat had blow Jimmy's doors off and Gary was giving Jimmy a hard time about his slow Checkmate outboard. At first I thought that Jimmy's Checkmate might not be running as fast as it was and something was wrong with it, until Jimmy told me that this Gary was one of the owners of Wonderland marine and that this Tahiti jet boat was a one of a kind custom built jet boat with a 800 plus hp, dual Turbo charged big block Chevy in it. I told Jimmy not to be up-set because he didn't win and Jimmy told me he was not up-set about not winning against a 800 plus hp jet boat, that he was up-set because this new neighbor Gary was saying bad things about his Checkmate. I then told Jimmy I have a plan and that I needed his help. I told Jimmy the next time you see your new neighbor Gary on the water to go over to him and act like nothing has happened and for you to invite Gary to come out to the Detroit river where there are lots of fast boats there that Gary can Race against. I will be there with my blue and sliver Checkmate Enchanter I/O and we will have some of our other Action Marine Club members there, where we will all have some fun with your new neighbor Gary and his Tahiti jet boat. The very next time Jimmy saw Gary running his Tahiti, Jimmy jumped into his Enchanter and went over and invited Gary to Join him on a Saturday run on the Detroit river. Gary was very excited to be invited by Jimmy to go out on this coming Saturday and run the Detroit River where he could Race some other boats and show them how fast his Tahiti could go. Little did Gary know that he was in for a big surprise and that he was about to learn a lesson that he would not forget in a long time. I told Jimmy to take his new friend Gary down to the Detroit River in Trenton Michigan, Between the two Bridges going over to Grosse Ile island and we will meet them there around 4 pm. I closed Action Marine at 3 pm on Saturdays so we at Action Marine could meet up with the rest of our Action Marine club members and spend the rest of the weekend Running the Detroit river and spending the night's at white sands or crystal bay. Jimmy and Gary were Running side by side on the Detroit river right where I told Jimmy I would meet up with them and that's when the Fun began. I pulled up on Gary's right side of his Tahiti jet boat at about 40 mph and looked over at Gary with a Big grin on my face, like I was about to swallow a mouse and nodded to him to a race. You could see that Gary was excited because here he thought that he had another slow Checkmate that he could beat up on and add another notch to his belt. I had told the other Action Marine club members what was going to happen to Gary and for them to stay back with Jimmy once the race between this Tahiti and I started and enjoy the race. Gary Hit the throttle of his Tahiti jet boat with it's 800 plus Turbo Charged hp and pulled hard from the rest of the boats while I was just staying with him so I could clock his top speed. You should of seen The surprised look on Gary's face as I stayed right with him till he topped out at his max speed of 84 mph, then I waved by by with a Big Grin as I pulled really hard up to 120 mph on my Keller Speedometer going under the second bridge going over to Grosse Ile island. There had to be 1/2 mile between Gary and I in just a few seconds from his max speed of 84 mpg to my 120 mph. When I turned my Checkmate Enchanter around to go back to my Action Marine Club Members there was Gary Stopped in the water beating his fist on the dash of his new Tahiti jet boat. I never stopped to talk with Gary or anybody else I had raced because I did not want these guys to ask me a lot of questions that I was not going to answer. I always felt it better to keep them guessing and send them home with there tails between there legs. When I got back to my Action Marine Club Members they were all having a great time watching the race and being together on this beautiful Saturday. Jimmy was the Happiest of all the club members because Gary had made him feel bad. I told all my Action Marine Members that we were not done with Gary just yet. I had another surprise for him and that I was taking my Enchanter I/O back to my Action Marine right now and I was going to bring out my 20 ft Checkmate Enchanter XS with its Experimental Mercury 300 HP Outboard. My Action Marine club members stayed there Between the two Bridges going over to Grosse Ile island while I was gone and when I got back with my Enchanter XS with its Experimental Mercury 300 HP Outboard we all went looking for Gary and his Tahiti jet boat. Well it didn't take us long to find Gary trying to beat up on some other Hi-Performance boats over by White Sands in Canada. There was 10 of us with 20 ft Checkmate Enchanter XS with its Experimental Mercury 300 HP Outboards out of the 25 Action Marine Checkmates now over at White Sands watching Gary as he was Picking on some smaller outboard that he knew he could beat up on. I told the other 9 Action Marine members to follow me and do what I do when we get Gary to race us. I taught All my guys how to drive there 20 ft Enchanter's with the 300 hp on them really well and I knew they could all hold there own against Gary's Tahiti since the slowest Enchanter XS- 300 hp package out there that day was a good 87 mph boat or better. My Enchanter XS had no problem running 90 plus mph. So now it was time to show Gary that all the BS he gave Jimmy with his Checkmate and his little 200 hp on Woodland lake in Brighton was not nice and that there was a price to pay for his actions. We pulled up on Gary from both sides with My Checkmate Enchanter XS -300 hp outboard on his right side, again looking over at him with that Big Grin of Mine. Gary was Really Surprised this time to see me in a different Checkmate wanting to race him once again, only this time I had 9 more Enchanters outboards for him to run against too. Well Gary tried to get us to run from a slower speed so he could have the advantage over us but that was not going to happen lol. I keep pushing Gary till I got him at around 50 mph before I nodded my head for him to go and from that speed all my Action Marine club members started pulling out in front of Gary's Tahiti and over taking his Tahiti's 84 mph. Once we all were out in front of Gary's Tahiti we all turned around to go back where we left the other Action Marine members while Gary keep going straight in the other direction from us till he was out of sight. That was the last time we ever saw Gary on the Detroit River. Jimmy saw Gary on Woodland lake running his Tahiti, but now Gary was not trying to pick on every boat he saw. He seemed to have learned a good lesson and was trying not be such a Tuff guy in his Tahiti jet boat. I am Not a Writer But I have Given it My Best for All You Checkmate Members here on this Great Checkmate Forum. I Hope all of You have Enjoyed My Third Action Marine-Checkmate Story and the Time it Took for me to Put all this all Together for all of You here. Best Wishes Always to all of You Checkmate Members. Always Sammie from Action Marine

Great story Sammie. Your Action Marine Club had some some extremely nice and fast boats for sure. The thing that impresses me the most is your friendships and great times you guys all had running together. Just thinking of all the stories your friends have shared with all their family and friends about this great guy named Sammie. Thanks for all your time you put into this one. Now I'm in the mood to go fire up my Checkmate and hear it sing. :thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

Keep up with stories, and the local pictures. Showed the pictures to my 75 year old mother, she spent about 15 years on the local waters with an old boyfriend through the 90's into the 2000's. They were out of Humbug with about a 30 ftr. She immediately recognized the White Sands and Crystal Bay pictures. She keeps bugging me, she wants to go out for a ride and hit Duffy's one more time. My answer is, when I get that 25 ftr.

I too have some high performance stories myself, some safe and some not-so-safe! But all fun! Take Care Sammie, Your One Generation To Late Friend, Merc245-Jeff

I just learned that the world famous or at least locally known Duffy's Tavern and Motel is CLOSED. Since 911 and the lose of unimpeded US boat traffic it was a hard time for them. Quick story, used to close Duffy's at 1am then race up river about ten miles and catch last call at the Pier 500! Ah those so unsafe memories! (all the rich kids from the US would take their daddies center console over to Duffs, on the weekends there would 8-10 boats with at least 4-6 19/20 yr olds on board.)

Sammie's North American RC Boats and Motors

Dear Checkmate Members I want to thank those of you that have liked my third Checkmate story and that have left a nice reply and taken the time to click Thanks for my Third Checkmate story. I sent this third Checkmate story to some of my friends in my email list and I got this reply back from my Friend Nick that I had built him some of my North American RC Race boats that I use to build after I closed my Action Marine down in 1990. I had broken 14 IMPBA World Records in 5 different classes in both the straight away speed and the oval course records with the RC boats that I built and sold under the name of North American RC Boats and Motors. I thought some of you Checkmate members might enjoy knowing this information. Thank you all again for your nice reply's and for taken the time to click Thanks. Always Sammie from Action Marine

My story is shorter

I remember going to a boat race in Fort Wayne ….This was a new boat club for us so we were not known at all.

I had a big table with all my boats & Bob Hope had his too. A lot of guys came by and drooled on the table …Saying those are really pretty . are they just models ?? I said no their race boats .We got a lot of chuckles .The other club members were mostly all nitro boats & a couple Tony boaters. When it came time to enter I asked to enter every event I could …..So there was open gas and open nitro. I entered both …..Soon as I paid for open nitro , several guys started to complain …They said we already have 6 buoys in the water ……why add more ….That pissed me off. I complained and they said …We could use the money let him race ……Well the guy doing the complaining was in my heat …..There were 6 boats in the race …This was the first time they would see it run . Well it barked right up and that big chamber screamed with power …..After a couple warm up laps I could see a big crowd along the shore …Guys were all asking ….What was that big red turd doing in the pond …..Well the clock started & I ripped down the front straight ….there were 3 boats ahead of me ….I cut the first buoy tight & the monster prop spray was all I needed ….I took command of the race on lap one …..That was the best feeling you can ever get ….I finished in first place . but most important I silenced the bully’s and they had a new respect for gas boating …..All the weed eater jokes stopped & I had a new following of friends . Sammie you hard work made this possible …We dominated the RC clubs for years ….Several of the guys went on to get into the gas boats after that event . Too bad you closed it down ….I really enjoyed spanking the boys .

You are the best …..People everywhere knew about Sammie from NARC

I had a similar story with my RC boat years back .

You were quite the motor man Sammie

Great story Sammie, and thanks for sharing! I love the pictures and history :thumb:

It blows my mind how fast those Enchanters were running. I would love to be hitting 75mph, I can't fathom 120mph:drool:

Take care!

WHY did Sammie start North American RC???????

Dear Checkmate members
Below is a couple of emails that will give you a better idea as to what North American RC was all about and why I started this new business. I started North American RC not because I wanted another business, but because I wanted to Help out my old Friend Tommy that was like a father to my wife Pam and I and I was like the son Tommy never had. I used my own money in starting this North American RC business in hopes that Tommy could take it over one day and be his own boss. Tommy was 70 years old and still working very hard every day delivering heavy packages which really up set me. Every thing was going as Planed with this new North American RC business until our dear Tommy had a heart attack before taking over the great business that I had built for him. The rest of this story is below for those of you here that want to read it. Thank you all again for your friendship. Best wishes to all of you Checkmate members. Always Sammie from Action Marine

Good Morning George..Thank you my Friend for the Kind Words and for Wanting to put the Pictures and History of North American RC on the Boat Dock Forum. I hope you as well as the Others on the Boat Dock Enjoy the Inside Story of What was A Great RC Boat Company with the People that Really Cared about the Product they Built and The Great Customers and Friends that North American Built for. Take Care and Thank you Again for all Your Help..Best Wishes Always Sammie-North American RC-Action Marine

Greenblast Your Intruder XS is very Rare and a very Special Boat...there was only 5 of the Intruder XS rc Boats Built with the 40 cc Blackhawk Motors, built before North American RC Stopped building Boats and Motors..Just so You know that North American RC did NOT go out of Business. North American rc had More orders than they Could Handle and it was only Health Problems that Caused North American rc to stop Building rc Boats and Motors. In Fact The Home Shopping Network Tried to get North American RC to Build them 2000 47 inch Intruders with the Mag 3 motor and Radio for the First Order to start with. North American had to turn them down because the Boats and Motors that North American rc Built were Custom Built Boats and motors to each Customer and there was no mass products built there...Every Thing was Custom Built for the Customer and His Needs. In Fact in 1996 North American RC Broke 9 IMPA World Records in both the Straight away and the Oval in 5 different class's and in 1997 North American RC Broke 14 IMPA World Records in both the Straight away and the Oval in the same 5 different Classes..Record Speeds were from 51 MPH to 65MPH all done with 2 47 inch Intruder XS boats and 5 Different North American Motors Ranging from 23cc to 35cc. Also in 1997 at a National IMPBA 2 day Event in Fort Myers, Florida We Moved My 47 inch Intruder XS with a Mag 3 up into the 90 F Mono Nitro Class and for the First Time Running a Gas Boat in the Nitro F Mono 90 Class, We Took 4 First Place Heats in the 2 day event, Out Running 11 Nitro F Mono 90 Boats at there Own Game. A Nice Article with Picture's of our Boats and My Dad Tommy and I were in the RC Boating Magazines.

Sammie Personally Built all the Boats and Motors that was ever Built at My Fathers North American RC with the Help of 5 other Key People. Our Goal was in Helping My Dad put North American RC on the World Map. I had My Own Hi-Performance Race Boat Business in Detroit Michigan. I use to Build Real Custom Race Boats and Action Marine was a Very Big Part of Mercury Marine's Hi-Performance Products and Racing History for many years. Everything I did on the Big Race Boats was Put into the North American RC Boats and Motors that we Built at North American. We Had Spec Sheets on every Boat and Motor and the Customer that these Boats was Built For. Spec Sheets included before and after Weight of each boat, CG,drive shaft length, custom prop pitch and cup,Strut Height, and Speed on our Stalker Radar gun, many times included with the package was a Video of the customers boat running on the stalker radar gun. Each boat was broken in by Sammie and his Wife Pam with 1 gal of gas before the testing began and the final Set up was Completed and Radar Speeds Recorded. Each Package got a Complete Day at the Private Pond. Every North American boat was Packaged with a North American Hat, T-Shirt and a Beautiful 8x10 Framed Picture of there Boat in our pond. Many Times a Video of there Boat Running on our Stalker Radar Gun was included also. The 47 inch Intruder XS with our Mag 3 was Guaranteed to run between 50 and 53 MPH..But Never was any of our Intruder XS packages sent out with Speeds Less than 51 Plus MPH. Our 44 inch Warlock Cat with a Mag 3 Ran 52-55 MPH and our Cracker Box ran as high as 48.5 MPH. Our 47 inch Viper XS was Set up For the 30cc stock Class with Canister Muffler and we had them running 42-43 MPH. Our 41 inch Baby Intruder Nitro Boat was Built for My Dads Pleasure, but Many times we would Sell it to Others that were into the Nitro Racing. We even Built a 60 inch SuperHawk that was really Wide and Deep for a Big Play Boat. Recorded Speeds with a Mag 3 and a running Weight of 23 LB's was as high as 48 MPH. It was only Health Problems that Caused North American rc to stop Building rc Boats and Motors, since my Father Died and North American RC was Closed Down. Sammie-North American RC-Action Marine

Sammie,

Those RC boats are nothing sort of incredible, one resemble a Checkmate with a canopy, I love them they are so cool. They are very fast too.
So please tell me what one cost I am curious. I guess 3 to 4K with all equipment to run it. maybe more. I have seen the RC boats at Hobby people Hobby Shop for 2k and not near as tricked out as your North American RC- Action Marine boats. one can tell the same technology as in your full size race boats are just scaled down. Each one looks like a work of art, I like the yellow and red V-bottom. does the fuel they use have a nitro mix?
I think the right person could pick up the pieces and start building them again to your specs.what do you think?

Mike

Mike The RC Boats we Built were 10-15 MPH Faster than any other Gas Boat that was ever built back than...at one of the IMPBA Time Trials there was two guys that built a Custom 35cc Race Boat and with this Boat they Broke that 35CC Class record at 51 MPH My Dad Tommy was going Crazy LOL.....We had Not Run Our 35CC Motor Yet and I only had 2 47 inch Intruders with 5 Different CC motors to cover all the IMPBA Classes Built for this Time Trial. So I Put our 35CC Motor in one of the intruders so Tommy could go out and Take the 35CC Record away lol.....Tommy Never Drove any of these Boats that I had Built and Set up for this IMPBA Time trial, So this was His First Time out with any of the Time Trial Boats. I Pulled the Cord and Tommy made 2 passes back to back pushing up these 2 guys record of 51 MPH to just a little over 65 plus MPH and then with out comming in he went after the 35cc Record in the IMPA World Record Oval and Broke that too...this was the same way we Broke all the IMPA World Records First the Stright away Record than the Oval..in 5 different classes. the last Time Trial in 1997 we broke 14 Records in the 2 day event. Mike the boats we Built were Gas with oil mix..that's why it was such a big deal when in 1997 at a National IMPBA 2 day Event in Fort Myers, Florida We Moved My 47 inch Intruder XS with a Mag 3 up into the 90 F Mono Nitro Class and for the First Time Running a Gas Boat in the Nitro F Mono 90 Class, I Took 4 First Place Heats in the 2 day event, Out Running 11 Nitro F Mono 90 Boats at there Own Game. We Sold the Complete 47 inch intruder like the Yellow and Red one with our Mag 3 and Radio for around $2500.00 complete turn key..this was a Real 53 MPH Race Boat Ready to Blow away any Body else in any Gas Class any where in the World..we sold our Products World Wide. We had Many Customers after getting there First North American RC Boat order More of Our Boats so they had Our Boats in the Other Classes Too..Some customers had Bought as Many as 5 Complete Packages From Me..that was the only way we Sold Our Boats. This way I knew every one Ran its MAX and every Customer was Completely Happy with everything we Built for them.

Mike These RC Boats are Raced all around the Country and in almost every city in every state. Mike I could of Sold North American RC at the Time Tommy Died but as With my Action Marine where I Had 2 Different people Wanting to Buy it instead of Me Just Closing it Down and Selling off everything..I Could NOT Take the Chance that Someone would Run my Action Marine Down into the Ground as it would have been with the Guys that Wanted to Buy North American RC...I Never Needed the Money and there was No Way that I Would Trust anybody with my Life's Hard Work or my Name....I Sent you a email with guys on the rc boat forum wanting more North American RC Boats this Morning..Yes there is Still Guys out there that Would Love for me to Build these Boats and Motors again...But when Tommy Died so did North American RC......It would Take for me to get back into the Designing of New Motors and Hulls and to Bring back My Team that Helped me with Both Action Marine and the Fact that we are all 15 years older now and many of us have one kind of pain or another I Would Not Ask them to Do this again. Old Dogs Like us Need a Rest LOL...If I was Still Younger and was Not in so much Pain I Think I would Bring You into this and Let You Enjoy all that I have, Along with all the Guys that Helped me with My Action Marine and With North American RC. I Think it for Now would be better to get Your Checkmate the way you want. One Never knows what the Future will Bring.....and Good Things Happen to Good People. Always Sammie from Action Marine

Great story Sammie.Brought back some memories of Mercury's weird 1980 300 hp engine.I only bought one and never could get it to perform well at all.Had it first on a Trimate III and then on a Switzer GL-20 but it was slow and unreliable. Obviously you figured it out and from the photos looks like you sold a bunch of them.I never knew Merc built many, you must have bought them all, sounds like you!Keep the stories coming, those were good days,Checkmate days. Robert Nelems, Nelems Marine, Jasper ,Alabama

Great story Sammie keep em coming. I am always amazed not having the technology and advacements in materials and products that are available today. How Sammie set records that larger boats have a hard time acheiving today. Not to mention the handling at those speeds. Very impressive wish I could have worked at Action Marine and been there to enjoy those times. I am sure there was alot of trail and error but man the end result sure paid off. Sammie get back out and so we can learn from the best. "The Master of Speed." Thanks for your help

I know the thread is a few weeks old but I'm just getting caught up from being off the grid for a while.......

I sure did love reading my friend Sammies recent Action Marine story about the Enchanters vs the Tahiti.
Whenever Sammie would say "I have a plan" --that meant somebody was gonna get a very fast lesson in boat performance.
Some great old pics in this thread too {love those Action Marine jackets}.
Thanks so much for another great story Sammie, sure does bring me back to my younger years in drag racing.
