V MATE II new color scheme

happy

Active member
Hey all.. I've got my V Mate down to nothing again, bare hull not a lick of hardware on it. I want to shoot the whole boat metalflake, silver mostly with blue along the freeboard line and some blend work on the top deck.

Any suggestions on products? I know I'm going to use a silver base for the silver, but how about the blue?

Does anybody have a roundabout cost per ft? I know its more work than the usual paint job, but from what I've heard its dry time and patience. Is this correct? Preliminary estimates seem quite high starting around 8k. The boat is perfect, not even a minor repair required. any thoughts?

Thanks,

Happy:cheers:

OUCH !!!!

I'm sure when you're done you'll have the boat of your dreams, but have you ever taken a good hard look at what you could sell your boat for if it ever came to that? Most of us who are rebuilding Checkmates will likely take a bath if we ever sell, and that fact is somewhat of a driving factor in how much I'm willing to spend on my restoration.

I wouldn't sell her, way to many memories and good times. She has character and not any v-mates in this area that I've seen. When you pull up on the beach this boat breaks up the same ol same ol look, and will run with the best of the new out there.

This is what I wound up with, been working on her all week with the help of some talented painters.

I hope this link works. We are almost done wetsanding and buffing, what do you think? This is my lil ski mate with her 35th birthday suit.

Boat looks GREAT, I loved my V-mate II wish I still had it. Keep us updated on the pics.

the cost with the painters was 159/ft the product used were from Azco Noble, May have it spelt wrong. We have her all buffed out and sitting back on the trailer, now the rigging work begins. I'm gonna wait until it warms up a bit, I don't have a heater in storage and its in the 20's at the moment.

The boat looks outstanding!!:thumb: Any price you put into it is worth what ever you can afford. I have done a few cars in my time and they were worth every penny I spent.
What I see here is all talent those guy's are good with thr prep work and a gun. Now the finishes-- Take you time and you will have a timeless classic.
My only recomendation would try to find a motor that meet the year of the boat -- then you would have a true classic.

I have a 1978 Evinrude looper which has been modified over the years which will be going back on, I'm going to do all the rigging prior to hanging the engine. And yes, the painters are very talented, they do custom car restorations and have alot of first place trophies. I have been on the phone with Kip and his brother to get the original checkmate logos and seating. Now that its painted its time to get the interior pieces made. If work dosn't get in the way too much I should be boating this spring.

Checkmate has been very helpful, really nice folks. I'm glad I'm a checkie, and yes they can produce the logos.

Its very rare today that a company takes such pride in helping owners. I don't know how many times it has mattered "did you buy it new here" Checkmate is one company that is helping keep a lot of our boats alive and running. Big thumbs up for them and the help they give us in the community:thumb:

Hey happy, Be careful when you flip it over. I did mine in the grass after it had rained several days in a row. It had some mud on it but the ground sank a little bit and helped cushion it.

Thank you all for the nice comments on the colors and stripes. The pictures really do not do justice. As a football fanatic, never thought of the Dallas Cowboys, I originally just said silver and blue, I owe the color combination to my wife, I couldn't tell you how many times the stripes changed while we were taping the boat off. The painter locked the paint booth and thats how it came out. After I figure out what engine / guage package I decide on, and the interior is in,the painter's want the boat back to complete and "compliment" are the words they chose.
