Wavejammer craigslist find!

Well-known member
Been looking for a wavejammer for over a year now with no luck. My goal is to aluminum plate the hull and run it on the river with some friends who kayak. I wanted the jammer because its light weight and 3-4 people can carry it to and from the water easier than the longer and heavier waverunner. I did not want much as I knew it would take some abuse. So when I saw "wavejammer $400" I called him right away. Even better is he was 3 minutes from the house! He told me it needed lots of work and had not run in many years due to his work schedule. It also needed a steering cable and the tires were both shot but he would buy me new ones. I got up there and wow it was nasty looking! There was over a 1/2 inch of dirt and dust on it. I guess some pop exploded on it and it was also sticky. I took my finger and cleaned a spot and it was shiny as a new nickel! I did a hillbilly compression test (jumper cables & a finger over the hole!) to make sure there was no holes in the pistons, and also a spark test. I ended up getting it for $300 as is, aired up the tires and hulled it home. As soon as I got it home I did some cleaning, did some test, and got some parts. The guy had it winterized before storage. Compression is 145psi on both. I cleaned the carb and it was spotless. Gas tank was drained when stored. Its all there but I still need the steering cable.

As you can see, its way to nice for a river runner as planed. I am amazed at how nice it is. 1 spot on the starboard side the size of a dime and the touch up paint was the wrong color. You can see on the one side of the trailer, how it is stained vs the other side. I got some 13" tires that will fit perfect on it. Hell $300 invested, should be fun to get out on!

Now I need to get back onto the playmate, damn ADD:o

Great price. It looks like its in pretty good shape. Those little guys are hard as hell to balance at low speeds.

One thing though....... DO NOT use a jump box on this when you kill the battery trying to start it over and over. You will smoke the electronics in a heartbeat. :thumb:

Nice find yellow!!

that looks pretty clean
you should have taken a before pic!!

Hey matt how is that jump gonna smoke the electronics???
Unless others are different, i have had mine apart (dropped it), and it just had a 12V sealed battery in it ??.. Im not questioning you, with your background, you definatly know way more about electronics than i do... .. but I'd like to know why, and maybe someone else will learn somethin' too!:thumb:

I've ridden one of those years ago when they were being sold. As stated, you can not just idle around on those. Kind of like a jet ski, you have to be moving, or you'll have a hard time keeping it upright.

From what I have heard from a hand full of boat/pwc techs, its not a good idea to use them. I think some boxes step up the voltage in order to compensate for the lack of cranking amps. The higher voltage is what is bad for them.

Ask Jon, he knows first hand.

Interesting Matt. Thanks.

I got her fired up today for a minute. Fresh battery, plugs, new gas, and away she ripped! Steering cable shipped out today, so it should be here monday. Thursday will hit the 70* mark so sounds like a good day for a water test

It may be a party foul but damn I love the smell of 2 stroke smoke!!!

Brian,

Who do you kayak with? My bro-in-law, Jay Evans (check out kayakjay on youtube) kayaks with the whitewater warehouse guys. Just wondering how small a world it is. He lives in Middletown and now runs a landscaping business. He's been trying to get me out for a while but I can't roll to save my life. Almost broke his nose while he was trying to teach me.

Anthony, I go with a couple friends that I went to school with. There is a group that go on the lil miami river just down from ross to colerain (I am sure Jay will know where I am talking about). I have seen 30-40 people on that trip every week(wed or thurs evening) I try to stay away from the big group as I don't know much about kayaking yet.

I searched him on the tube and there is some crazy water in his videos!

To be honest, I really perfer something that has a motor:thumb:

Red, you got a nice looking one also from the pics I saw. If I didn't find one, I was going to talk to you and see if you wanted to sell it. The only reason I didn't from the get go was the driving distance to get it. I love them 500's easy to work on, I got tons of parts stored away, and used parts are all over. Heck I also bought a WR500 that runs good for $40, no title. Hull is cut up and in the dumpster and the motor and electronics are in the garage!

Got the trailer all done today. Sanded it down and hamerited it! Installed LED lights, DOT tape, tongue jack, winch strap, and upgraded the 8" wheels to 12"ers. Also put a pair of CB antennas on the rear corners so I can see where it is when I back it up. I will post up pics tomorrow.

Got her all together tonight. Steering cable came in today. Runs like a champ. Now just need to get it wet! I still have to do bearing buddies.

Wow, Yellow, Do you ever sleep??? I see project after project coming from you. Nice work!! They say its all about the details, It seems like you got it covered!!!
You need to come up to RI for a while and take care of my stuff while I have a nap:) :)

Karzrus, thats what I like about the 500's. cheap to buy, easy to find parts, and I think they are more fun than the big ones due to the flat bottoms! I would have no enjoyment with going 80mph on a pwc.

John, its Megans 03. She loves that thing other than less than steller power!

ckmate225, I never sleep!

Nope she is 800+lbs, has BBQ sauce on her face and chicken grease under her nails. Hair looks like a rats nest and has a big FUPA!!!! I don't have a wide angle lens on the camera so I don't have any pics:lol:

Guess you will have to come to the owners rally to check her out:p
