What Ever it Takes

Brian, I've got the Blue one from Auto Zone in the Vegas right now but just this week I replaced the Interstate house bank in the motor home that was close to 7 years old.

Hey Enticer1 - What happened to those Lifeline AGM types? Are they worth the money?

I agree Doug.
I have to admit i do keep it on a battery tender.I think you could make a lower priced battery last just as long with proper care.
Let's face it you can kill any battery in a hurry if you run it all the way down all the time.

Battery Tenders

Tony you just hit the nail on the head, a low amp battery maintainer is probably the key to make any battery last. After discovering that the stereo in the Vegas was killing my battery I bought a couple of cheap tenders at Harbour Freight and put them on the boat and the bike. They don't over-charge or boil out the acid and the batteries show 13.2 Volts when I put my digital meter on em. I haven't had a battery issue since, as soon as these cheapo tenders die I'm gonna get the good Deltron models.

FYI: I just recently put a blue top deep-cycle from Auto Zone in the boat because it was a free gift but the Interstate Marine that I took out that is four years old showed 95% capacity on my tester.

Battery Tenders, their for real !!

This post is pretty old, but still good info. I've had the same interstates( I think) for years. They do sit on a maintainer when not in use. I believe in the maintainers big time. All my batterys that aren't on them don't last when it gets cold.

I tried every deep cycle on the market when I was surveying to run my GPS base station, I would run them dead everyday and charge them every night, nothing came close to lasting as long as the optima blue top, it lasted twice as long as anything else I tried, lucky to get a year out of anything else I tried.

This last summer, I had 2 WalMart batteries and they both went bad. The second one took my alternator with it. Now I have a 1000 amp Optima blue top and no more starting issues. For the winter months, it is stored inside with a good agm tender hooked to it.

Slow charging on a tender over the winter is key to a long life. It keeps the electrolyte from settling to the bottom. I just replaced a pair of 86 month Interstates in my diesel that failed after 66 months and did a lot of reading before buying new batteries. From what I read, Optima was bought by one of the big companies (Interstate perhaps?) and their facilities were moved to Mexico. The guys on the diesel site were saying quality has been hit and miss ever since. I ended up getting 31 series farm/commercial ones from Advance Auto. They crank that diesel faster than the Interstates ever did.

The Walmart deep cycle battery I replaced with the current Walmart deep cycle battery I have in the Enticer was purchased by my dad 10 years ago. There was nothing wrong with it but I replaced it just for giggles.

I used to use walmart batteries. I think recently they switched suppliers or are just making crap batteries now. Everyone (12 batteries ranging from waverunner to caddy) I have bought in the past 2 years lasted no more than 16 months. I ended up with delco in the boat. 1 burnt up but I still have one left. Its been a great battery so I will stick with them. Now I need to buy a new bracket for the boat as I am going from the stock 24 to the upgraded 27 series. BTW, the tender is a great idea....... I keep saying I am going to but now with a 12v trailer winch, its a must for boat and trailer!

TIP OF THE DAY!!
Take and drop 2 regular aspirin in each cell. This will make the charge last longer and preserve the life of the battery. Goes back to my low rider days with hydro's. Trust me, it works!!

Second Tip of the Day

When topping off the batterys always use distilled water, there is a difference.

Brian, how do I detect that my battery has a headache ?? :surf:
