What paint to use

Ok so I'm restoring a 71 mx 15 I have a thread going on the restoration discussion part of overhauling forum. I'm planing on painting the boat and would like to go with the original purple or match it the best I can. One of my good friends witch is a auto body teacher at a teck high school. He knows alot but not much about painting a boat. He told me that he knows PPG makes a bottom boat paint. I was thinking about painting the hole bottom in this. Then just matching up the purple metal flack from House of Coolers to spray on the deck. What do you think of the bottom all black and the deck just purple. Also the product choice or what do you recommend I use. I used epoxy for my layup also I think that would matter on paint but then again I don't know.

I'll start the roll,
If your not leaving the boat in the water it doesn't much matter.
If I were to paint my boat today it would be dupont base/clear.
Unless I felt really good that day then I would go with house of color and some flake.

Bottom in a single stage epoxy,it will look just like gel. Sides and top base/clear, use a good epoxy primer, and good clear those are far more important than the base.

There are several good options out there. Do a search on this sight for paint you will get tons of info. A lot depends on how much money you want to spend and your skill level as a painter. I have used Imron on my boats and like it. It is expensive. There are other paint systems that may do as well and not as pricey. Here is a link to an older thread where some of use were talking about imron.

The Good Stuff

I just asked a friend that has been doing custom paint work for over 40 years and he recommended either Awlgrip or Imron for durability.

All the above and you can't go wrong!!! I have basecoat/clearcoat on the Enforcer and love it!!:thumb: Don't forget to look at outlaw33's convincor redone in gelcoat!!

black bottom?

Regarding painting the bottom black, i love the look of a black bottom as long as it follows the strakes up to the bow. This was my issue when I was thinking of painting my starflight. I decided to leave the bottom alone and only paint the sides.

All - What is the easiest to spray? I'm thinking of renting a garage for March and would use it to spray the top. (or should I just brush it?).

If you brush it you'll save alot of money. Won't need to rent. You can run up home depot and get a 5 gal bucket of what ever color you like and just pour it on and brush it out.

Spray it don't waste your time. You like black bottoms? Have you seen outer limits sv43 race boat great color combo with a black bottom. Something to think about

I was torn between Awlgrip and Imron when starting my restoration.
As I investigated throughout the custom boat shop world I found that the majority of them recomended Awlgrip over Imron.
They are both very good products as long as used/applied correctly but apparently Awlgrip may have a slight advantage with "slighty" better UV protection and Awlgrip maybe slightly cheaper {well neither is cheap}.

Last year I did have my hull bottom repainted black with awlgrip and it came out really nice, --- this winter the rest of the boat with Awlgrip.
