Yukon's 1973 Project Jetmate

Looks like a great project, tons of potential, But being a jet boat you are gonna need some serious HP to go fast and by fast I mean over 60 mph. As for the water pump, you can use a regular old water pump like on an auto engine or an after market electric pump like they use on alot of race cars. I haven't seen any jet boats that didn't have a water pump. The headers are cooled via water hoses that run right out of the top of the manifold where the normal radiator hook-up is but they usually split into 4 lines 2 for the headers and 2 to relieve the pressure when you are at idle, its easy to put too much water down a header/manifold and it will flow back into the valves and you will get water in the oil. Also I believe on a marine engine you want to degree the cam differently in-order to to prevent this also. I'm no expert but there is a spot on sceamandfly.com that is just for jet boats, I would go there for most of your technical questions regarding the proper set-up for a jet-boat. Good Luck.

Thanks for the kind words of support 175checkmate and also to 92enticer ya, I guess you gotta point there. I could very easly of spent some coin and bought me a boat and rode it around.. it's a little more personal when your blood and sweat are mixxed in with the fiberglass.

Well, I have a day off today and the weather is great! To bad I have to tune up my ride mower and do the lawn. Hopefully though I might get a chance to mount my olds 455 onto the engine stand and start a bit of a teardown at least. Might even crawl around in the jetmate a bit and clean out her hull and take the gas tank out to prepare her for a power spray.

It seems that there is never enough time in the day for me. I work crazy hours and when I finaly do get time off... the house takes it up on me and leaves me no time for the fun stuff.

supergenius74... Thanks for your post. It gave me quite a bit more insite then I had before and I can see a bit of your words when I look at some of the parts I have that I know are for the cooling system. I also apreaciate pointing me to screamandfly. I will check them out and see what sort of further info I find there.

The deck is extremely faded and pitted under the metalic flakes. Hard to describe but it is very rough to the touch... kinda like inverted sandpaper... rather then the bumps of the sand... it's like all these tiny pits... can this be sanded and buffed and such?

I know you can't realy see the extent of the fade but I am curious what is concidered unfixable.

You can try a small area and see how it turns out.Sand it with 600 then progress to 1500 grit. Then buff it with a fast action compound then a leveling compound then a micropolish and see what you have.It might come out nice. You never know until you try.Do you have the plates that go inplace of the water pump?

Hey yukon I was looking at you're pics and realised what you have for manifolds. My buddie just payed over a grand for a set of them.Used.
With those pipes run the intake hose off the pump to a tee and then to the rear port of both manifolds. Not the riser but the back of the manifold. The front port on the manifold goes to where the water pump bolts up you should have two plates that bolt in place of the water pump that the hoses go to.The hoses off the t-stat housing go to the ports on the exhaust risers. And don't run a t-stat get a resrticter for it it goes in place of the t-stat.Well thats the style manifolds you have. This type of system works very well. Its more of a hp set up but it is a Checkmate after all.

You can find a lot of jet boat sites out there like http://www.havasudoug.com/.I'll get pics of this set up instead for you.

ps with a 455 and say a b impeller 70 + is not out of the question. My niebors 21 ft tahiti with a stock 460 runs 74mph gps the pump has had some work but she is stock motor wise.

Ya, I was extremely lucky in the fact that even tho there was no motor in her, the previous owner took the motor and stripped it and left pretty much everything I need to bolt on to another 455. Motor mounting plate, bellhousing, universal joint for the drive connection, intake manifold, nice holly alum. rocker covers and a very, VERY sweet HEI marine ignition system (MDS I believe) with the whole distributer and wires about as thick as my fingers.... amunst many various oddball parts for cooling system. heh heh... all that and a classic checkmate and trailer for 200 canadian!!! god I love my job sometimes!!

I have seen a few setups that don't have the water pump (mounting plate as you described with 2 holes and either 90 degree or T stats) This particular setup he appears to of used the water pump on the motorThus I don't have the second plate... but I'm sure I can track one down somewhere.

Thanks btw for the very descriptive info on the setup. You wrote in such a way that I can actualy visualize it... bravo my friend. Thanks. The only thing I don't quite get is the restrictor... I take it that restricts the water from backing up into the heads at an idle like supergenius74 was decribing above?

My day off tomorrow... gonna either clean out the shop and organize all my boat parts or clean out the boat some more and possible the engine bay... so much to do and so little time it seems...

I probably won't worry to much about the faded deck for the time being... A buddy of mine has a 26' Doral Phazer with a merc 454 and says a friend of his can do miracles with gel coats any colour but red (for some odd reason). I may get him to do it for me... aparently he works cheap for friends.. can't argue with that!! I can't wait to give my buddies Doral a run for his money!!!

jetmate

Hi,
I just joined the forum and saw yukon's jetmate. I also have a jetmate, I've had it since 1980. I put it in moth balls in 1986 for about 12 years and then brought it back out of retirement to restore it. It's just about ready to get wet. Maybe this week end or next. It has new paint and interior, I rebuilt the pump, and the engine has just been redone. Had to, I spun a rod bearing last year, so we did everything to it including roller cam and lifters. Can't wait to fire it up. I have a big block chevy in it hooked up to a Berkley pump. The pump has an A impellar with a shouldered wear ring. When I get time I will post some pics and more info. If any one has any questions about jetmates I've been playing around with one for a long long time.

Welcome Jetmate! Lets see some pix! You revived a very old thread, this project probably never panned out

The term for reviving a very old thread is "Necroposting". :thumb:

Don't remember ever seeing this thread the first time. Looks like it would have been a nice boat all finished up.

JETMATE

OK OK I'll put some pics on this week. By the way I fired it up in the driveway yesterday, Sounds Gooooood !!!
