I got this beauty for a Craigslist trade and spent the afternoon removing all the steering and hardware in order to begin bodywork. I plan on doing a mild customization. The previous owner removed the side badges and half ass sanded the top. I wonder if anyone here knows what year/model it is? The name plate is kind of faded but I believe it is rated for up to 90 H.P. It is 13 foot long. Here are the current pics. I will try to keep the project upgated as I go along. Thanks for any help. P.S. I hope the pics work.

Look for the serial # stamped on the back of the boat, the last two #'s is the year if it's there, might be a playmate but I'm sure someone else will tell you forsure, cool boat:bigthumb:

I'm not talking about the tag in your pic, there should be a stamp on the outside of the hull at the back something like this. Almost every boat has one, even my 1985 pelican paddle boat has one, If you can read this on your boat the last 2 #'s is the year, exampal, the one in my pic is a 89' it usually can be read even after paint. If you were refering to this one as unreadable then nevermind, I guess you can't read it. also I think the max hp is probably more like 50-55

That is a very old Checkmate, and looks like it predates the 1972 Coast Gaurd serial number regs. My 1966 V-141 looked very similar to yours, but yours looks older. This is something definatly to get Mike Combs to look at. He would be the best help.

Thanks, I wasn't sure when they started doing that.

It does not have the stamp on the hull for identification. The only part of the tag I can read is the horspower reading and I could swear it reads 90 H.P. I have no intention of hanging that much power on the back (what am I crazy?). I got an old 35 hp ruse electric start that will be the starter motor untill I can find out what this thing will be like in the water. I am also starting the stereo system today so look for a separate post for that. I would love to get an original dealer pic if something is out there. Thanks everyone for your responses.

The older horsepower ratings are different than they are now. Some time in the early '80's the government made the manufacturers change how they rate outboard motor power. Before it was crankshaft power, after it's propshaft power.

So that older 90 rating is closer in reality to a 75 horsepower rating in todays numbers.

I think 1986 was the first year for propshaft rating.

Maybe a V130 Custom? Nothing else it looks like a rare old Mate. What shape is it in?

Here is a brochure pix to compare-

It's in really good condition. The only things I need to fix are holes on the dash that some hillbilly thought needed to be there. The transom is rock solid and you can actually walk on the bow without any cracking noises or flex. I am thinking of building a mini walk through windshield out of tinted 1/2 inch plexiglass. Any thoughts?

Oh and also does anyone know where I can get replacement emblems for the rear sides?

P.S. Thanks for the link but I can't tell from the picture if this is mine or not.

Mercury started rating engines at the prop shaft before other manufacturers, '81 if I remember correctly. All other manufacturers were on board with this by '85. I'm not sure if this change was so much a government regulation, I seem to recall reading that it was a standard adopted by the boating industry (NMEA).

That's a great looking boat by the way. It'll sure look nice when it's finished.
