100+ MPH CHECKMATES 100+ SPEED (Nominations)

I don't know where this uncle's cousin's friend stuff comes from. I personally know this guy/boat, that is, 1st hand knowledge. As for heresay, again, the gps says what it says, on more than one occasion. Do you accept eye witness testimony with gps back up? I assume gps is the preferred method of clocking because its easy. (electric eye would be more accurate). I owned a radar gun and they're a joke. Not accurate and dangerous. I was radaring a skater once at 121, he came so close he got my leg wet. So much for the gun. It is currently at the bottom of the lake by way of a mishap.

I clearly stated my reasons for limiting names and gave a clear 1st hand testimony with gps back-up. Your response says something about your charecter and ego. Utimately, its not really about how fast a boat is or is not, its about charecter and ego. Putting the best construction on everything and verifying if the skeptic desires. Sometimes (?) we fall short, there is truly nothing new under the sun.

We can make this thread alot shorter. I won't budge from my claim (because I was there) and you won't budge from your skepticism. Let the egos roll. Simple as that.

Being you know the guy and have seen the boat in person. Can you atleast tell us what year and model the Checkmate is ????

For my character i am a A-HOLE and I don't care who I piss off and I will not bite my tongue I speak whats on my mind or whats the truth. Never thought about my ego just trying to keep a thread honest.

Msmile

You seem to be the only guy that talks about this boat I have read boat site after boat site to get some kind of grip on this boat. And the only thing I have found so far are your post's

Post by you

As I've posted before; there was a 18 foot checkmate with a blown 540+ cubic inch (not a 572) with a mercruiser twin prop counter rotating surface drive. It ran 116 on the gps. That's getting it for a 18 foot boat. I don't know the boost or size of the blower. 250+ hp in nitrous too.

6-30-08
I'm an outboard guy but the fastest sub 20 checkmate would be an i/o. There is no replacement for displacement. Phrased another way: There's only one thing better than cubes...and that's more cubes. Local guy had a 19 or 20 foot checkmate w/ roughly a blown 750 hp. Blackhawk drive Mercruiser. The thing went 115ish, no joke. 102ish w/ same motor naturally aspirated. He never got the nitrous hooked up.

1-24-06
I've mentioned this before, a guy in omaha with a 19' checkmate, bbc, blower, nitrous, and a blackhawk ran 116 on the gps.

4-30-05
18-19 foot checkmate io in Omaha ran 116 on the GPS. A 20-21 checkmate io ran 101-3 ish too. As for hp and barn doors...speed is speed is speed.

1-13-03

I have a buddy with a 15+ year old 19 ft checkmate. He got it on a wednesday last august and ran it in a local shootout that weekend. In the 4 days he pulled the motor and drive and slipped on his blackhawk and mill. 107 on the gun! Yikes. Downside- parts avail.(including props), handling (terrible around the docks) and down time. Discontinued and not many people have messed with them

What I would really like to know what story are you sticking with
:sssh:

102 ish
107
115 ish
116

Boat size

18'
19'
20'

Does he or does he not use nitrous

And 1 more thing you posted 6-30-08 that it ran 102 ish naturally aspirated. When in 2003 it ran 107 and in 2005 it ran 116 what did he do take the huffer off for one pass then stick it back on for the second pass.

You should have spent your time researching the boat. Again, putting the worst construction on everything addresses character. Impune, impune, impune.

It was a 84 Mate, closed bow, between 18-19'. Owner didn't know model and didn't care. He thought was 18'9". My previous statements are correct.

It was blue w/ silver w/ 260 Alpha Drive in original form.

Motor was a 540, 30 over, calcuates to ? 548? 540+ just as I said.

Nitrous was on the boat and availible, as all his boats, but not used. Technically, my statement is correct.

The blower was a B&M 420 Mega Blower, which was on and off the boat. My statements are correct.

Owner est. hp @ 650 Naturally aspirated and 750-850ish w/ blower.

Boat ran 102, natually aspirated at the Cottonwood Marina Shootout. I guess there's a pic and some ink of the event: omahariverfront.com, archives, Cottonwood. I'll see if I can find it.

Interesting note, at power the gunnells (where the shifter is) would move up and down 4-6 inches. That's cajones!

The 116 claim stands. (w/ blower)

I did screw up on the bravo claim. I said the rig was 10 or so slower. The correction is the natually aspirated version was a good ten+ slower but used half the gas. The bravo was slower yet but accelerated better, handled poorly.

WOW!! Something stinks.
In post #17 msmile said "I don't know the boost or size of the blower." But in his last post it seems his memory is coming back.
You would think we could at least get a pic.

This may help.....

More than 2000 people turned out on the banks of the Missouri River at Cottonwood Marina to watch this year's 'Race Against Time'
5x5shim.gif
Although the weather was a bit chilly, no one really seemed to mind too much as the crowd of over 2,000 spectators stood on the river bank to watch some of the fastest boats in the area compete for the Race Against Time. A total of 65 boats were entered, many of which came from as far away as Kansas, Missouri, South Dakota & Arizona.
The boats were divided into classes determined by their hull type, length, engine classification & number of engines. Each driver started down the 1/2 mile course and passed through a radar trap where their speed was recorded as their score. Awards were presented to the top 3 participants in each class.
In memory of Bernie Balkus

Race day was sadly memorialized by being dedicated to the memory of our friend Bernie Balkus who lost his life on the job in a train accident only days before the racing event was held.

After a memorial 'Cottonwood Flyby' ride with Bernie's Challenger, the memorial ceremonies included dedication of all subsequent boat races to be named the annual "Bernie Balkus Memorial Missouri River Shoot-Out" boat races.
5x5shim.gif
Bernie was eagerly looking forward to racing his powerboat in the then upcoming shoot-out Bernie was a true dedicated boater and, if we may say so, a local river boating icon. For so many boating summer weekends up to, and including the present, you could always catch a glimpse of his long sleek "Roadrunner" 1999 Challenger Offshore powerboat splitting the silence and making way out on the river. You'd have seen a big suntanned Bernie with his wide toothy mustached smile fumbling with a drink as he wrestled the helm with his blonde best friend and wife Sheri in the bolster-seat beside him holding onto her hairdo. In the back there would always be family or friends. The last thing you see, of course, is a trailing wake of foam behind the stern and Bernie's trademark - a skyward spouting "rooster tail".
He was usually found boating anywhere between Sandpiper and Cottonwood Marina - out there on the Missouri River he loved and lived on. He was known and loved by so many people and will be remembered by us forever as this event will now be known as the 'Bernie Balkus Memorial Missouri River Shoot-Out'.

I assume that msmile's friend is the guy from Omaha at 102MPH. The 1993 Checkmate runs quite a respectable speed as well.

I only wish that his friend listed the type of boat that he ran at 102MPH! Gotta represent if it is a Checkmate!

Thanks HD. I also researched it,but only went back to 2003.If that is the guy a pic would be nice.:poke:

Being msmile will make us do his research this is what I found. Is this the boat or not "MSMILE"

OMAHA, Neb. --

Edward Guyett, facing criminal manslaughter charges in a boating death this spring, has been released without bond after a hearing today.

Guyett turned himself in Wednesday.

Investigators say Guyett was driving his boat (pictured, right) at 116 mph May 31 when his friend, Bruce Turner was thrown from the watercraft and died.

Turner's body was found four days later.

I just got the info in to confirm the next 100+ boat for are thread and you will not belive this. I heard Kunkels's may have had their hands under the engine hatch.

The owners name is Jack

Sorry to see the end result of such a fast Checkmate MSMILE. I was kind of hoping that the "Shootout" info. would be enough....

On a brighter note, I can't imagine being strapped into that little V-Mate @ 100+!!!!!:eyecrazy:

That is one sick ride!!!:thumb:

that is very sad....thanks red for your investigating....on all of these....also as I said before, my hats off to that guy....just wished he'd put all that power in a larger hull.....would have been just as fast and hopefully safer. Now that 251 that ran 114 I feel was a fluke....all the planets were aligned and everything went just right...because other attempts have not worked out, he has a buddy running a 251 also that runs at the radar run that has been the boat to watch the last 3 years....scary is a understatement !!! he's crashed twice(not really), just has not hit the water. This past year we all thought it was over this time....but his luck prevailed..so any waylove to hear/see these fast boats...but stories like the one from nebraska kinda sets you back a few steps....maybe it's just me....Rob

Hdaddy-Thanks for the research. That same engine went into a 1000# heavier Eliminator 22 daytona and ran the same speeds. The other checkmate (21) on your listing would run 102-3ish. The owner's name was Larry and he sold it to the guy listed (I thinK) whom I don't don't know. I raced Larry with that boat a couple times and it was a legit 102-3 boat. I have zero idea what Larry ran for a set-up. All I know is he ran neck and neck with an Allison BassBoat / 2.4 Bridgeport. Keep in mind the speeds at the shootout are not optimal due to boat traffic, etc (especially hard for smaller boats). The Allison listed at 103+ was blown off by this first checkmate I've been referring to.

BRed-I mispelled impugn but it still applies. Character, honor, ego. Yes, you have your pic. Too bad its not on the water. The Checkmate has since been parted out. You questioned whether the rig ran 102, 115ish, 116, etc. The answer is yes, all the above. If the rig was run with three different motors, two different drives, different props, different pulleys (blower),--it would stand to reason the rig ran different top end numbers. Its called dialing in the set-up. For what its worth, the accident did not take place at wot, probably 70-80 mph. Rogue wave. Been there, done that, I've got 5 days in the ICU to prove it.

BRed-I mispelled impugn but it still applies. Character, honor, ego. Yes, you have your pic.

Yes I will agree with you calling me "impugn" but as stated in my first post of this thread.

Please do not post any here-say photos of boats that may have ran over 100. If you post a pic of a boat that runs over 100 you better have proof threw links to other sites if you are questioned.

You provided no info on the boat or links talking about the boat. You made me and others research your boat for you to end all this crap. You could not even tell me what make the boat was. Anybody else that post mystery boats here in this thread will get the same treatment as you instigated on yourself. I am just trying to cut out BS claims on fast boats and if you cant understand this you are the one with the ego problem.

:bigthumb: Yes your claim of this boat running 100+ is granted. A better pic of the boat would be nice if anybody can dig one up.

We should ask Chris to delete all the posts between when MSMILE makes the claim and when we find the results of the "shootout" to keep the thread on track (and less ugly).

It is a damn good thread, the BS kind of dilutes it.

JMO.

Ok guys, I've sat back and watched this thread for a while, eating  and enjoying a Captain & Coke and it dawned on me that this thread was starting to sound like the B.S. you hear on Scream & Fly.:shakehead: You guys need to pull the plug on this one and get back to the original post...Pictures of Checkmate that go 100MPH+. I don't care to read all the bickering, heresay, and bs:sleep:. I want to see the hardware, rigging, hulls and talent that make Checkmates one of the best boats out there!!:bigthumb:

well if we did not go thru the B/S and reds research we would not have gotten to the info on that boat...I think he deserves a thanks....and a lot of this post came down to proof..even the 251 I talked about I did not have much on...had a pic though...and just goes to show...how few have hit that mark....I thought this was great ! Rob
