1970 Checkmate MX-14

Do you think I could disconnect the shifter cable so it doesn't go into gear and run the engine #1 in a trash can even though we drained a little lower unit oil?

You can disconnect the cables if you want . I run motors like that all the time . The shift shaft is just under the bottom carb . You can reach down in there and shift it by hand .....

If there is no oil in the lower unit DO NOT run it!!!! Even in natural there are a lot of moving parts in the case that would not take well to not having lubrication!

PS: If i read your question wrong i am sorry! would rather make an a$$ of myself that see someone smoke a gear case on accident!

Did you find out what the SS means on the other motor?
When you say its stuck in gear, do you know if its a lower unit problem or is it somewhere in the linkage or shifter control box?
Hope the lower unit is ok and its something simple.

I was planning to fill it up with oil before I would run it and then check after I run it to see how bad the oil leak is (check the color).

I never got a reply on the SS.
The guy I bought it from says the clutch dog is stuck or something. He also mentioned a circular thing on the shifting rod has slowly warn down. I was planning to drop both lower units and compare the differences of a working and nonworking lower unit.

I am not an TOP expert by any means but i was thinking that the original ss's were just a "hopped up" version. The only one i have ever seen had a little bit different wrap around with some venting and a coned lower. It was also a 15" motor with power trim. But for all i know it could have been all done by someone.

Well I probably won't be able to work on the engines for another week, since I've had only weekends open, and I'm going to the ACBS (Antique and Classic Boat Society)Blackhawk Chapter boat show in Lake Geneva, WI this weekend. I'm apart of a wooden boat club and youth group that is promoting wooden boats to the younger generations. We have restored a wooden boat that will be in the show.

Anyway, where is the best place to get lower unit seals, impellers, and gaskets and seals for the carbs, fuel pumps, ect? I'd like to replace as many seals and gaskets as I can.

Thanks again for all the help and advice. I realize this is not the most exciting restoration, and is not happening very quickly.

I haven't done a whole lot with the boat, but I did manage to get both engines on a stand in the garage. This is where it will be for the winter. I'm going to start the motor that's stuck in gear because I've yet to see it run. I'll pull the prop off though. And then I will pull both lower units off and have a local marina look at both and rebuild the better one.

With the engine off, I was able to take the transom plate off and take a look. I'll need to seal it up more. There's some cracking and quite a few holes.

Check your transom and make sure its not rotten ...

That's what I was planning to do. When we were trailing it for about 5 miles the engine was tilted up and it didn't bounce at all. Is there a way to check without lifting the deck off? Can I look at the wood from the holes that are already in the transom?

Also find yourself a good set of Power trim Rams and a good pump ....

That will be a last priority. I've been looking at parts for these old engines and all the other necessary parts for the boat and it adds up quickly. I would eventually like to get to that point but for now I don't need anymore moving parts. I was looking at a midsection of a short shaft merc of this model year at this old marina. It was just the midsection with the transom mount with the power trim parts on it and it looked like I would have to swap quite a few parts.
