1971 Checkmate MX15 restore

Yesterday i picked up a 1971 Checkmate MX15 for the great price of free. The stern is solid, but the floor needs replacing. I dont have to work today so hopefully i can get some pictres up and cut the floor out. I have a 90 yamaha im planning on putting on it.

Heres the trailer getting worked on. Both cross members were rusty and it needed a new axle. We're planning on getting a primer type coating for the galvanized and spraying it red.

Don't skimp on the restoration...

The next guy to buy it may have kids.....replace the transom and do a good job. The floor and the rest will come into play. Nice rare hull to clean up and resto. Not many 71's around. If you need some flake to spray, lemme know, i have a lot of color options. Good luck!! It will be worth it when you are done!!

Well the trailer is almost finished, the only thing left to do to it now is put on the bunks, replace the rollers, and put on a set of diamond plate fenders. We decided not to paint the trailer and are instead doing some black and red striping to accent the boat. As soon as the trailer is finished we will be able to get working on the actual boat.

looks just like the one I restored, ran a 140 on mine, fun/fast boat.
Hopefully a year or two down the road i can find a 4 cylinder yamaha to put on there. I already have the 90 and i'm planning on painting it black and getting a custom set of VMAX decals made for it so it matches the boat a better and adds a little custom touch.

Well i started buying a few things today to figure out which holes need to be filled while im doing the fiberglass work, and what new holes need to be drilled. My plan is to pretty much get the whole boat put together so no new holes will have to be drilled after paint.

I'm not for sure what I'm going to do for the dash, but the gauges i bought included this bezel.

I also ordered some pop up cleats for a low profile look.

Well the trailer is finally finished! The only other thing i want to do to it is find some decent aluminum rims to put on it, but that can wait till after the boat is finished.

Trailer looks great nice work ! Love the floor removal tool in the first pic. I had one of these boats in 75 with a 150 XS Merc. No GPS back then LOL but it would fly. Keep up the good work. Take a good look at the transom with the condition of the floor I would do it anyway. Do it right the first time you will be glad you did. There is a lot of good info in the resto forum take a look at CMPULSE170 that was a great help to me. YELLOWFIERO has some good stuff on paint that will be of help to you at this stage of your rebuild.... GOOD LUCK keep us posted on progress

I was always amazed at how fast mine took off, it wasn't a top speed boat, maxed out at 55 with a crappy 21p alumimum prop, but boy was it fast, faster than my friend with his 454 jet boat, faster than a jet ski, faster than my other friend with his 400hp I/O. It was a rocket out of the hole, I could be on plane in 1-2 seconds.

Thanks for the comments, I've been pretty busy lately and am finally almost finished with school, so I'll be on break for the summer. Next week I should have some updates on the floor and fiberglass work. Luckily my job starts early morning so I am usually finished by the early afternoon so I'll have plenty of time to work on it.
