1975 V-Mate II Restore

I used poly just to keep the option of gel coat on the table should I choose to re-gel the boat (which I know will be mentally and physically painful) or attempt gel patchwork. The likely option though would probably be paint though.

My dad did the gel on my motor pad in black . 1st time he had ever sprayed gel coat . And ill tell ya its holding up great. every thing we read said mask off your section and apply the gel with putty knife cuz it is thick. My my dad insisted on spraying it thru a paint gun . he cut it with acetone put in the black pigment and some hardner and went to town . Then sprayed a layer of mold release over it to help cure turned out really well . So dont be scared of the gel coat . You have tackled everything else and are doing a great job .

I don't think the spraying of the gel will be too bad, as long as it's thinned out some with acetone. I think the biggest problem will the the ENDLESS sanding! :yell:

you can touch that up red and you wont even notice. But it you are puting a plate back there then that will hide alot of it . Looking good tho . Looking forward to seeing some more pics posted up :thumb:
With the clear and color on the boat pretty well shot, I think I'd probably be wasting my time making an old looking boat continue looking old. I'm thinking of deviating from the historical look a little and add a little modern to it. We shall see? I'd like to replace the windshield with something more like this http://checkmate-boats.com/photopost//showphoto.php?photo=1352

I'm not sure what I'm going to do on the back in regards to a plate (whether to use a flat plate or jack plate...etc) so that's the reason I covered over the holes from the inside. It really depends on the motor when I get to it to see what I have and what it needs. I may just trade the jet ski for something newer and/or bigger. :bigthumb:

Your right there was alot of sanding . But it kept the old man busy and out of the fridge and I didnt have to sand lol :D

A 17' boat isn't big on the water but it's going to seem like a 40' yacht when flipped over and I have to sand everything five times or more. I don't know how people do the bigger boats without going crazy? My folks own a 25' Nordic Rage and washing and waxing that thing is a task.

Haven't bought a compression tester yet. It's on my: after the transom gets replaced and the balsa core is complete and...well, you get the picture. :brickwall: The motor is most likely going to be a fall/winter project. Trying to get as much glassing done while the weather permits outdoor sanding.

I'm setting the transom tomorrow. The wife took today off and so we were out and about spending quality family time. Tomorrow, it's quality time with the Mate.

You're more then welcome to see what you might be in for if you choose to redo your Mate this winter. I don't think I'm doing anything Sunday other then filleting or tabbing in the transom so I might be able to hook up with you sometime if you like.

that sounds good to me. What time? Hell if your not to far from from me I will bring the boat with me, maybe you can give me some tips. Pm me your address if you could:cheers:

What time would be best for you? I'll send a PM with directions but I wouldn't worry about bringing the boat. After I get the transon in today, I can run over to your place and check out your boat.

Adding some more

Oh, just an FYI...there is still some gas still in the tank. I have no idea how old or what the mix is but I don't have the means to dispose of it at this moment. Anyways, here is a better pic of the tank. If you still want it, I'll bring it over tomorrow.

damn and I thought i was doing good with the 115 hp mercury. do you know what pitch prop your going to use?
Not sure what's on the motor right now as it's unaccessible but I have two extra props: 19" alum. three bladed which is probably junk as the blades are dinged up along with a small crack. The other is a brass 25" three bladed prop that is also dinged up but see no visible cracks in any of the blades.

25 is pretty crazy right? mines a 21p. do you think the hook ups on the tank are still good? sure bring it at least that way i can see it.

What do you all think the boat and trailer will be worth, no engine, after its done, paint, interior, everything? I have a line on one that might be for sale. I want to compare the value of what it might be worth done to what materials will cost me to fix her up. In other words what would a restored VmateII and trailer be worth, no motor?

Value in terms of money will not be as much as what you probably will put in. The hull on Nada for my V-mate was around $800 for average. If I had to do it all over again, I would of never bought this boat with the metal flake in such bad shape but it's a first time rehab project so what the heck. Next time I'll make sure the gelcoat is in good to great condition to avoid re-gel coating or painting an entire boat unless it's a must have (like a Donzi Sweet 16) or a deal too good to pass up.

When redone, I'm guessing (no expert here) around $1,500 for the boat and the trailer will probably get you an additional $200 - more or less pending on condition and type. Maybe if I'm lucky I could get $3,000 on a good day for the total package with the old Merc.
