I used poly just to keep the option of gel coat on the table should I choose to re-gel the boat (which I know will be mentally and physically painful) or attempt gel patchwork. The likely option though would probably be paint though.
My dad did the gel on my motor pad in black . 1st time he had ever sprayed gel coat . And ill tell ya its holding up great. every thing we read said mask off your section and apply the gel with putty knife cuz it is thick. My my dad insisted on spraying it thru a paint gun . he cut it with acetone put in the black pigment and some hardner and went to town . Then sprayed a layer of mold release over it to help cure turned out really well . So dont be scared of the gel coat . You have tackled everything else and are doing a great job .
I don't think the spraying of the gel will be too bad, as long as it's thinned out some with acetone. I think the biggest problem will the the ENDLESS sanding!
