1989 Checkmate Cobra Sprint

I have one of these!

I know this is an old post but I found one here in Rochester, NY. I bought it and it's in mint condition. The one I have has a windshield and no header but it does have big Cobra sticker! This boat is so much fun and does about 44 with a 14x21 prop. Does anybody have anymore info on these?

Cobra sprint

I'm glad someone bought that boat in NY. I am in Michigan and bought one of these new from Kunkels Marine in Ohio. That boat was a blast and I have not seen another since I sold it. The info I was given is that it was designed for a new race class that was cancelled soon after it started. I was told there was about a dozen of them race and non race versions. I would like to find another one if you here of any for sale. I will try to scan in some pictures.

Hello all, I'm a new member and I'm pretty sure I just bought one of these boats you guys are talking about....this is LITERALLY the only little bit of information I could find on this model on the internet. It is a 1989 Checkmate Cobra Sprint with a 2.3 OMC engine, painted factory grey (the boat has about 50 hours on it and is MINT). It's the 2 (or 3, if you're ambitious) seater with the bench in the middle, closed bow, and hatch right behind the head of the driver. It is all black with a little bit of red, and the stickers that you seem to be referring to. I'll post pictures in the next day or two, but just curious. What are these things even worth?

Any information above what you have already provided would be great.

Thanks,

Steve (From Canada)

I will have some pictures later tonight. I also emailed Kip @ Checkmate and he sent me the only information they have on it, and the following email reply regarding information on the boat. It looks like I've found a real diamond in the rough.....any of you guys know what they have/could go for? I'll post the info kip referred to later as well!

"Steve, I’ve attached the only literature we have on the Cobra Sprint. It was designed for a OMC promoted racing class …..that ultimately didn’t go anywhere. We made a race version with header sticking out of engine hatch ( top photo )….and a production version ( bottom photo ). Don’t really have any specifications or anything on it ……probably only made couple dozen or so. Sorry we don’t have more info …….only made them for a year i think maybe 2 . Me and my brother actually went to a race in Kentucky with 2 race versions first year we made them…….fun little boat, Kip"

That looks really nice. What kind of speeds do they run. Looks like a Playmate I/O. Cool and enjoy it. :thumb:

"Apparently" it'll run in the mid 50s-60's as is (speedo goes to 65 or 70 if I recall correctly). This boat is light as hell and probably makes about 140-160 hp (does anyone know how much HP this thing makes????) so I can kinda see it pulling some good MPH. I'll GPS it this spring when I get a chance to get it out and let you guys know.

And If it was a playmate it'd take up a lot less room in my garage which would be nice. For now I have to store it criss-crossing the garage since it is 5" too long from the tip of the out drive to the trailer tongue to fit. I might have to invest in a trailer with a detachable tongue or something of the sort so it'll fit in there along with my car.

Wow, that boat is sweet!!! I've seen these before, there was one a couple hours away from me for sale on Craigslist for a while. Really cool little boats, bet they are as blast to drive!! You got a hell of a score, boat looks like brand new!! :thumb:

Not only have I never seen one. The one you have looks right from the show room. Thats a sweet find. If your only a few inches in your garage then maybe you could get one of these.

It looks like I'm 12" short for my garage, but unfortunately that coupler won't work on this trailer. If you look closer at the one picture you can see the frame of the trailer goes right up to the tongue. I'd have to cut those two additional tubes and move them back, and it just seems like too much work and headache, especially if this is the original trailer that came with boat. I could adjust that thing the nose of the boat sits up against 5" forward so that'll give me 5 extra inches, but that's about it. I either have to sacrifice some room in my garage, remove a portion of the outdrive every time I park it in the garage (not going to happen!), buy a new trailer that suits my needs or go to my parents house and measure the depth of their garage:brickwall:

Can you trim the drive back down and give you a little more room? I dont know how far your drive will go down on your trailer without hitting the floor but you can gain a few inches that way a lot of times.

The measurement was done with the drive about 2" from the floor. No more wiggle room left there unfortunately. I think I might be able to gain a few more inches by leaving the tongue of the trailer on the ground, and tilting the drive down even further. Its going to be a tight fit either way!

Turn the steering all the way to one side?

LOL. Yes I know, when the measurements were taken the boat was at the old owners house sitting flat (tongue supported) with the outdrive trimmed all the way down 2" from the floor. It's 20'8" from tip of the outdrive to the tip of the trailer tongue. It is going to be there for a few more weeks until I can bring it home and try to shoehorn it in at my place. Ideally I would have liked to install that hinged coupler and made it so that the boat would fit in a much shallower garage if ever required, but that was not meant to be.
