540 freshin up "I hope"

I got the motor in fri. It was not easy. It took two hours to get it set in with all the B.S. bolted on. I still think I saved time by installing every thing on before putting it in. I have allot of clearance up and down but the front is very close..I think this summer I will remote mount the intercooler to give room for servicing the front of the motor. I went on a 4X4 trip this weekend and did not get to fire it up.
I will get some more done today and have it ready for the lake this weekend if all goes well. It does feel good to have it off that cheap motor stand and back in the boat.

almost done . It was 96 today and we were covered up at the shop. I love weather swings, cars break down more then and that's what buys boat gas!
fuel system has been flushed and pressure tested with no leaks . If all goes well start up and first water test thurs.:bigthumb:

I cannot believe that it has been so long (7 month's) since my boat ran last.
When jumping in something like this project. I thought I was going to do a "Just A Fressin up" to the power plant and spend a little on some motor bling. Some how that went out the window. I have taken some heavy ridicule from allot of people about taking a perfectly running boat and taking it apart.
This project did not go smoothly in any way. The cam took about 5 weeks. The head gaskets took 3 weeks and then came wrong. Thanks to Bob at Marine Kinecits ,he was able to get them to make a set and overnite the right ones.
The blower set up is made for surpintine belt. When using this kit on a duel carb setup the outlet on the blower is way to close to the carb cover. Procharger said it will work fine .When under boost the hose will pop the kink out . We will see when I mount my Go Pro under the hood. I am going to run it this way till I make a hat for the carbs.
The Intercooler leaks water. Thank god I did not have the carb hat on when I started the motor or it would have filled it with water and could have broke it.
I have a new one that is much bigger and made to remote mount. It should be to my door thurs the 20th.
When I went to start the motor It back fired and kicked back and broke the starter. I could understand why it did not just fire right up. I had everything perfect. I called Bob and ask if my cam had a firering order swap. When he looked it up and said "yes I sould have told you that"a great weight lifted off my body. I swaped the wires and it started like it had never been out of the boat.
All of that was worth it ,when hearing that thing come to life. It sounds great and shakes the ground when its running.
I am taking this week off to get it done, cleaned and to the lake by this weekend.
here is a vid . I had to use Youtube I got bared from uploading vids on Photobucket.

she sounds absolutely nasty man, I love it. Can't wait to get my 540 purring soon. I hear you on taking way longer then what you ever imagine. I'm in the same boat right now getting wrapped up with one thing after another and never even having a moment to touch my own stuff sitting at home :( Got a bareblock and rotating assembly that's been all machined and ready for assembly for close to 2 weeks now.. still in the boxes

hitting the water today

I got the remote cooler in today and it is in the boat. I think it looks, and is going to preform great. I have some loose ends that need done over the next few weeks but all can be done while floating on the lake. I want to clean up the hose's and wireing and repolish everything. It got a little smeared up in the install. I will take notes on speed v/s rpm.and see where I need to go with a prop. I will need some help with that one.
wish me luck and hope to see you on the water..:thumb:

I went to Kinkaid lake fri about a hour before sunset. It sure felt good to be back on the water.
The boat ran great . I had a few minor things to repair on the boat so I got a 30 pack of coors light and Joe and I found a good place to tie up and we did the repairs .
I had the temp wire for the gauge swaped with the temp alarm . I had forgot to run the ground wire for the new gauges .
After the repairs we went for a ride. The lake was smooth as glass, and the full moon was brighter that I can ever remember. I was like driving on a well lit personal race track!
After that Joe went home and I stayed to finish the job (the 30 pack).

Debbie came up that morning and we loaded her 100 lbs of crap in the boat and we went for the day with no problems . The boat runs great . The extra power is bad a$$. Getting on plain is effortless. 1/4 inch of throttle when cruising at 3100rpm snaps you neck. I only whacked it once
and it was a O'shi7 moment for sure.
I like when going about 50 mph and then push the throttle down about 1 1/2 inch the prop wash looks like a jet.
The sound . O my gosh does it sound good when docking Its just nasty. the cam Bob made for me is great. He said 1000rpm for idle ,and I have 14.7 a/f never died or fluttered...
I got some things to find out about.
1. what should your a/f ratio be at 1/2 throttle ,3200 rpm, 3lbs of boost?
on a car this does not happen . I had 11.0 a/f ratio. and that is close I am sure.
2. I think I may need a differant pully for the procharger to lower the boost. I saw 6lbs at 4700. thats what I want at full throttle.
3.I want to install a knock meter to to keep tabs on that when buying fuel other than the 93 I get at my gas station.
4. I have lost the two wires for the trim indicator. I have looked and looked and some how I have hidden it.
Does the wire comming out of the drive usually hook to the motor harness or the boat?
5.fix the hindge bolts on the motor cover. They have worn the fiberglass out a little and I want to catch that before it gets big.
6. I have to run the inter cooler out flow hose thru the transom .

3lbs of boost at 3100?

Awesome bud! Knock sensor is great idea btw. Also, watch that 1000 rpm idle, bravo's dont like it too much. Hard on the gears. Slower shift speed the better. As fas as your afr's, im not sure. 11 is a little fat but boosted motors usually run that way. Bob should be able to enlighten you a bit im sure. Glad you are up and running great!

Nicely done and very impressive, also my trim indicator wire is in the
motor harness and I can see it behind the motor just below where the
distributor drops in.
