Anyone Towing something big with a Toyota Sequoia?

I've driven the dmax, I'll agree that they are nice trucks... drive great, good power, and a fantastic auto tranny. I was pretty impressed with a stock 05 my boss had.... don't get me wrong, I still love my cummins and I'll probably never own anything any different- but I'll give the dmax credit for being a great truck as well.

The cummins is a great motor as well. Tho a nice looking truck, I am just not all that impressed with the truck its in. They still dont have the trans figured out IMO. I got a buddy with a modded cummins and he has gone through 4 trans already. Dodge is working with his trans builder to see what they come up with for upgradeable parts that will make it to the mopar parts counter. This is the first time I have ever heard of this happening, I think its a good step!
As for a power(less)stroke, I had all fords for company trucks. All the problems we had out of them, I would never buy a ford for personal use. Everything from a wire harness melt down on a F650 the second day I had it with less than 150 miles on it to bad rust on the doors of a super crew.
My ratings
1~chevy
2~dodge
3~VW rabbit pickup (only for coolness factor)
4~ford

Either way you look at it, as briannelson2003 said, tie some money up into a rig also. I would hate to see a nice looking check all smashed up or even worse a check owner's family smashed on the side of the road.

The solution for dodge's weak tranny is using a good tranny shop that builds high performance trans for pulling/drag racing. If your friends truck is out of warranty, go with a tranny that will last! I know of a good tranny builder in MI that is reasonable, built quite a few autos for sled pulling trucks, including a friends- HTS/Dave. There are a bunch of good tranny guys out there that can fix it right and permanetly for him- Suncoast, Goerend, ect. If he is going back to the same builder over and over he is just throwing his money away- imo.

I have manuals in both of mine, so no problems here- just put a bigger clutch in it and your good to go!

He is using a high end trans in it. Lets just say he is 17 and could fuk up a tank if you give him enough time!!! Its not out of warranty but with the mods, dodge will not cover the trans. The good thing so far is that the trans company has covered all the rebuilds so far and I think they got it done right this time. This one has lasted longer than 3-4 weeks, LOL. His goal is to have a good pulling truck that is a daily driver........with age comes wisdom!

I need to call him and see how the truck is doing, last week he dropped 2 injectors and burnt a hole in one piston and broke a valve. Like I said, he could fuk up a tank!

I agree on the manual trans. If your going for pulling hard, autos just cant take the abuse the manuals can. A cummins and a manual make a great pair! I dont know about this but I thought I heard something about dodge using a allison trans????

I don't know... I quit paying attention to the new trucks when they finally put an egr and particulate filter on the cummins... I do know that I'll never own a brand new diesel again because of this epa bullshiz. The exhaust is cleaner, yeah great- but it burns a hell of alot more fuel...so this is what they call progress? That shlt drives me absolutely nuts!:irked:

they already have a solution for the dpf filter, $300 for 2 feet of 4 inch pipe! i will try to make my own.

LOL, That's what I did with my converter. Cost me $50 to have a shop do it so I didn't even get dirty! Worked great, better mileage, and sounds great with the banks exhaust. You can really hear my LLY's turbo spooling up now:thumb:

I agree the cummins is a great engine hands down, but if I am spending that much $$ for a truck the damn trans better be able to hold up to at least the stock engine...and they don't..thats B/S to have to spend more on a high $$ trans...

Yeah, the trannys were marginal even with stock power in the earlier dodges... not so sure on the later trucks- I've heard they have come a long way... I do know that the manuals are pretty tough, though.:thumb:

Wow, this thread warmed up a bit while I was out of town - splurged on a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean and some disney time. Saw some crazy boats down there!

Anyhow, I've since purchased said sequoia and even towed the starliner out to Kary's with it. A starliner isn't a huge load, even for my mountaineer (a 6 cyl btw), but the sequoia was far far more stable and had much more power. The biggest difference is engine noise - the mercury was so loud and any downshift under load seemed like it was abusive to the truck. The AW trans in the toyota is not GM smooth for sure, but the whole package is super solid and firm. It's not a very fair comparison though - V6 midsize vs. a V8 full size truck.

Thanks for all of the input from everyone on the trucks! I agree that a 3/4 ton would tow far far better than this truck, but we tow maybe a dozen times a year and just don't need a pickup. My rig is only about 3000 lbs and I wouldn't say "I couldn't feel it" - but it was a very relaxed ride even at some pretty high speeds. I think the extra 1300lbs of a 234 persuader would be still be a relaxed drive. I don't plan to go any larger than that in the near future.

Nick - Dodge does not make the 6spd trans. they put behind the new cummings. I believe it's an Allison, I sell them a few solenoids for that trans.. I don't know much about it, but haven't heard anything bad.

No apologies needed! - who doesn't like hearing about the big trucks?

My bro-in-law is in the market for a 1 ton dump right now. Speaking of which - there is a good deal on a dodge 3500 with a 5.9L GAS engine. That really doesn't seem like much motor for a 1 ton truck, and as mentioned, the trans issues are a little scary. I thought it was maybe a misprint and it's the 5.9L cummings? Does anyone know if they put 5.9L gas motors in those trucks?

What's wrong with ford??My 4.6 handles my (dry weight 7500lb,loaded weight 11,500)37ft trailer just fine, even got up to 75mph once...NJ is pretty flat.lets see if I can blow it up in PA next season..

Nothing worse than seeing a small auto pulling a large trailer. Not only is it unsafe for those in that auto but others on the road as well. Too many have been killed around here by overloaded trucks, suv's or whatever else. I have talked to some azz clown that said his sequoia towed his 27' cabin cruiser to cumberland every time (4 hr drive) and that he never knew it was back there. I am sorry, but I have towed a 25' carver with my 99 k-3500 crew DRW gas and tho it was no where near unsafe, I knew it was back there. Ever heard the saying "the tail wagging the dog?" Just because the trailer hooks to the ball does not mean it should be pulling it.

I drive a 04 duramax crew, DRW. I know whatever I hook to it, I will be able to safely get there.

Geeze...forgot that I posted that one. Well all I can say is the Pulsare is not at all overweight. The sled trailer at 4500 lbs. is borderline for my truck but to say that I am being unsafe or careless is another thing. I have plenty of highway miles pulling trailers plus the Wells Cargo trailer has tandem electric brakes. If the weather conditions are not great than I do what most people should do...slow down! That's what puts those "others" on the road in danger.:poke:

I agree 100%. Most people don't slow down tho. I have had my class A CDL for many years now and its amazing what I have seen while going down the road.;)
