Checkmate helped start Sunsation

I've driven 4 hours twice to visit the Checkmate factory but I've never visited Sunsation (much closer!)
Nice boats you've got there. A local dealer here used to sell them and I always enjoyed the graphics and modern interiors!

If you ever want to tour the factory let me know and we can make it happen. We always have a lot of Kool stuff happening, most people don't comprehend what it takes to produce a performance boat.

so whos the guy from sunsation that lives over here with me in clawson,mi? i am always seeing sunsation trucks driving around and he lives about 1/2 mile from me.

Yes, I live in Clawson stop by some time and knock the froth off a few.... If I am home I am usually in the garage working.

Joe, is that your green and black F4 I see ripping across LSC in the summer?

Yes it is, that boat hits a poker run almost every weekend in the summer so we don't get a lot of time running the home waters. Powered by a pair of 700's she will go just over 100mph. Perfect ride for going to church on Sunday :p

That's because when someone stops by to knock the froth off a few my kid runs out and slapped a sticker on it.

Nice to see a quality boat builder visiting another boat builders site! Welcome aboard Joe. I met some of you guys at the Miami boat show in 2007 and boarded the F4. I was very impressed...big boat, large cabin, tall freeboard and still runs like a raped ape!!!:thumb:

that is cool to know for sure!! my dad almost picked up a sunsation last year but the dealer in NH wouldnt give him anything in trade for his mate because he said the resale of speed boats was going right down because of the speed limit they put on the lake. great boats tho

You must be talking about Shep Browns.....

Did the speed limit ever go through on the lake?

Hey Joe,
Are you teaming up with Checkmate or Baja in boat building. :bigthumb:

No but I am pretty close with Doug Smith. We have a lot of mutual friends and help one another out when ever needed. Doug is a great guy and Checkmate owners should be proud to have him at the helm, he will keep that company strong.

Baja is another story, I am not sure that Fountain will continue to produce the line. From what I am hearing things are not going so well in that department. Hopefully some how someone will continue to produce the Baja line in the future.

I toured Sunsation back around 2002/2003 with a friend that worked at Baja that had an interview up there. What impressed me the most at Sunsation (besides the boats) was how the employees were treated like family rather than a clock #. I still talk about that factory tour to this day! I had a few "shastas" with Mike Mcleod here in Bucyrus at a little Baja farewell party.........he'll always have a few tricks up his sleeve!

Joe, I think I met you down in Sarasota at a Powerboat Mag test a couple years ago. The F4 you guys brought down was an absolute work of art. We brought the yellow Baja 335 down that trip. FEARLESS and Fountains TEAM TABOO were among others there.

Definately cool to see you here!

yes sir, shep browns. we loved the boat, but just couldnt make the deal:( and yes it went threw stupid, but it went threw. and i think they are going to loose allot of visitors.

my old man has his big boat 37 Riviera flybridge. its a nice boat. he had a 97 272 baja, traded that for an 05 25 outlaw for his toy in FLA. he bought the 26 Mate ZT in 03 new. i bought the mate off him this year, he picked up a new left over 26 outlaw for his condo in NH. i think if sheps had a sunsation he would have bought one if he could have got the right price.

theres a 26 near me her in mass at flightcraft. not for sale tho, but man what a boat!!

yes the speed limit is now here:irked: 45mph/25night! combine that with the current economy and there can't be much incentive for performance boat mfg's to be at Winni.
I've seen many of the same boats for sale here a couple years now!

Wouldn't mind having a Sunsation 288!!!!
