Doug Smith comes CLEAN

Big Red, Ok i get that you caught him in a lie but why do you even care its not like you are riding around in a checkmate, or are even going to be purchasing a brand new one in the near future, you seem to put a lot of time complaining about the owner of a company to which you have no product from. I am not trying to start crap with you, just tired of the broken record about Smith. It is his company and thats that. If you think you could do better at keeping checkmate rolling get the money together and buy him out, until then let it go man whats done is done quit crying over spilt milk it doesnt do any good

I second that!! BR you have real good knowledge on alot of stuff and I have learned a bit from you, but lately I feel Its the BR forum. Is it just me or is it a high school clich here. Hey guys your god has a toon now and rode a baja just last week! Damn some of you guys live on what BR says and don't even question it. Good info is great and thats what this is all about but the bashing and bs is just that BS.

Their first post I made was just stating a article he posted. Where the thread goes after that is up to everybody else. If you dont like what I post dont read anything I post no tears here.

I have enough cash on hand to buy yours and sink it right in front of you so lets not go their. But you are correct on one thing I will not buy a new one, I rather save on a used one that looks new.

Nope, I was not implying that you dont have the funds, just stating what you have said over and over again about you not buying a new Smith era boat, and if you bought my boat and decided to sink it in front of me, well thats fine by me know why, because it would be yours you bought with your money and is YOURS to do with what you please
one more question if you would never buy a brand new boat from the factory then why put so much effort into caring about what Smith does with checkamte

I realize that things ain't what they used to be, espically with performance boats.. but, I don't think ressurecting Baja molds is the answer. The new 2000 BXR, low price performance boat might be a good idea... but, only as long as the quality is there (thats another story I've heard rumors about).

BR i get your point , but all the old product is still on the website and for sale...the colors on the zt350 i saw were just ok nothing great but the boat was impressive in person...again my point in all of this is whoever buys these newer style checkmates wont feel welcome here . and your correct we dont have to read your posts but then again you dont have to look at beckmates. but i do enjoy your posts and all the others that post that i dont fully agree with, i think its cool to discuss styles and disagree . i would just hope that the quality of Checkmate stays the same or improves and the original style boats are always available.and please please get back into a checkmate soon, call kunkels today and buy buy buy. or what if Doug built you a special BIG RED EDITION 28 OBX...LOL TAKE CARE

Couple of footballs and a fishing boat, I don't like it but, but he's in charge and he gets to do what he thinks is best.

So far I think he still needs to do more work to get colors and graffics right. I don't know why companies like Checkmate that build smaller boats don't take more of their styling from the leading big boat guys that have budgets for styling and are spending time/money to find out where trends are going and hiring leading designers.

If I was in charge I would be trying to take some of the Outerlimits/Nortech styling ideas and colors and get them on the new Checkmates I am building.
 
I am not against Doug, he might be a great guy, and good for the company. But what if he is not. What happens when he starts making the boats thinner? Brings out the chopper gun? What happens when YOU spend your HARD EARNED money thinking you bought a checkmate only to find its no longer a quality built boat that you would expect from checkmate?

Yes I love my checkmate, Yes I am going to buy another one very soon, and Yes its going to be a newer or even a new one. YES I will be PISSED if I find its a wolf in sheep's clothings (baja with a mate name).

Two things are going to happen,
1~ they build a ****ty boat and they go under, having to take them molds back to the dump where they were supposed to be .
or
2~ they maintain the quality and do not produce boats that have stress cracks in them before they even leave the factory

I doubt the quality is going to go down, I think it'll increase. Remember there's still some family working at the factory. I think they'd raise some cain if they saw quality short-cuts being taken. Remeber, they had a bunch of '90s era boats come back to the factory recently for new floors and interiors, I'm sure they're learning from that as we speak.
 
There was a reason the molds were at the landfill,they were old and worn out.Baja massed produced all of these boats and i'm sure they got all the use out of them. i can't understand why any company would be proud that they got there molds out of the trash! No matter what name they put on the side of it it's still a Baja and it will look and perform like a Baja. As for quality coming out of the factory i don't believe that it's as good as it used to be,i have been told of a lot of "cost savings" going on. I will say that Checkmate did need to upgrade some styling in there boats but that could have been done with what they already had.

Instead of starting a new Beckmate rant thread every couple months why don't you just continue one of the other 7 or 8 Checkmate bashing threads you started.

You like to put your beating a dead horse smiley up a lot.
I believe this thread deserves one.Because brother this horse is has been beat way to hard.

If you were to read through the links that I posted it's the same old,same old.
I used to think you were looking out for the better of Checkmate.But now I'm thinking it's something personal.

But hey it's a free board and you can stir the pot all you want.So good luck with your personal war on Doug Smith.

my understanding is the molds were no longer wanted because fountain bought baja and moved production to NC.. it had nothing to do with the condition of molds. reggie wanted to produce the outlaw series , so i guess he is a dope also according to the logic here. and you are the second person in this thread , ndanials was the first.. who have stated the quality as you hear has gone down... please let me know your sources and show me the defects in your new boats. i have a newer checkmate so i have a horse in this race. IMO the quality appears the same unless im missing something . dont slander the quality unless you can provide facts, and believe me im all ears if there is something wrong with these new boats please provide facts. thanks

I agree, in 2008 I had approval for 500K flooring through GE capital for another brand. I could have very well been selling Checkmates on the west coast. But the writing was on the wall. The economy was going bad. I declined my shipment of boats and glad I did.
The boat building companies started dropping like flies. I had a brief conversation with Kip in early 09 he said most all the traditional Checkmate boats and interiors were still available.
If you have the money I'm sure one could get what they want. The cost over a production model I'm not sure and if something has changed since I spoke to kip I don't know about it.
I resorted to selling engines ,parts,accessories, service repair and restorations and used boats when others went down. It's rough out there and boats are a luxury item people won't buy or repair if they don't have the money, the boat can sit untill the economy gets better and that's what is is these days period!

So more power to Doug Smith, I don't know the financial situation with his buy of the company but I would speculate that there are big payments to be made and the Combs are still involved because maybe they may get checkmate back if Doug fails, And if he doesn't every one gets paid. I know if I sold a business and there was a note to be carried I would not want to see failure. If this happens the doors could close for good if the Combs are not obligated or do not want it back.
So I say lay off Doug Smith it is what it is and bashing him online is attempting to undermine his company. Maybe we should all call your boss or clientele if you are self employed and tell them you suck when all we have is our own personal preference or opinion.

I don't think you do suck and been told your a nice guy in person but it's hard out there right now be cool put the shoe on the other foot.

I think that all of us have an opinion but the wrongful bashing of DS.and Checkmate in general is a little overboard.

Like it has been stated before.If there are new Checkmates out there that are built poorly nobody's talking.

As for my sources i won't say who they are.The quality issues i know about are that the gel coat is so thin it just has one side and the chopper gun ain't the checkmate way.As for the molds,they were long out of production and had no use for anyone.When they cleaned out the Baja plant they were hauled to the landfill.You can put all the bells and whistles on them you want ,but the core construction and hull design make the boat!
