WARNING: A friend of mine recently bought a late 80s Mate after a survey but found large amounts of hidden wood rot after the purchase was complete.

Like me, members on this board obviously love older Checkmates. But unfortunately, a lot of older Mates are just not aging well with their wood floors, stringers, core and transoms. While Checkmate was known as a quality boat manufacturer and built to the industry standards of the time......the brunt of older Mates are now 30-40 years old.

Anyone buying an older CM, please have a quality survey but also crawl, poke, and prod around the boat extensively before making any purchase, even if the boat looks ship shape from the exterior. Plus, don’t hesitate to ask for help from fellow CM members w- their vast knowledge and experience.

I just hate to see anyone buy a boat off this thread and then have major problems.

There are inexpensive bore scopes available on Amazon that allow viewing, taking pictures, and video through a smart phone. Under $40.

I found this to be a useful tool for looking in areas of our boat that otherwise can’t be seen, such as: under the floor, under the gas tank, down the ski locker drain hole, etc.

I just wanted to put this suggestion out there for anyone looking to purchase a used boat.
