Fuel sender - sealing

knarloid

Well-known member
What should I use to seal my fuel sender if I remove it from the gas tank to drain the old gas and clean out any crud?

I presume a new gasket, but would it require some form of sealant also?

The other option is to remove the 2" diameter filling pipe, but depends on which one get me closest to bottom of tank with a hose.

My fuel sending unit thingie to be technical just had a rubber gasket between it and the tank. Five screws and it was open.

The fuel filling pipe was only one c clamp and probably easier to remove. Did you buy a pump or just a small hose and let gravity do its thing? You can probably stick a hose through the bilge plug and into the tank and suck most of it out.

I bought one of those manual siphon pumps, so can either have a 5 gal tank beside me in the boat or use the bilge plug approach.
The sender cap is a bit rusty and until I see how much/little is in the tank, I can't tell if its working properly due to any poor wiring.
My filler tube has 2 clamps, and will probably be the first attempt I use to see what's inside.
I might try tomorrow - just to piss her off.

Pissing the boat off is one thing :brickwall: BUT if your relating to your wife (equal and all important care giver) That is heading to REAL DARK TERRITORY.

I managed to get about 3-4hrs working on her (the boat) today. :sssh:
At least I wasn't under her (SWMBO) feet in the kitchen. ;)

Finished replacing the fuel lines, discovered the tank holds 96 gallons, but still had nearly half that in it. :brickwall:
Drained about 15 gallons already. At least the same again to drain. Will burn it in the cars in the coming weeks mixed with fresh stuff.

The rubber ring that makes the seal needs to be replaced, but I might just replace the whole unit.

Also took out the bolsters and side panels and remainder of cockpit carpet. Definitely need to replace the whole floor.
Not sure if the Stringers need doing until I remove all the old foam.

How's the transom look from inside? Hopefully if the stringers are bad they didn't have the wick effect to the transom. Once you remove the floor if you can replace it with coosa board that would be the way to go. However that's some expensive stuff!! Good luck on the resto!!:thumb:

Transom looked good from inside.
Thanks for the heads up on Coosa board - I like the idea of reduced weight.

What thickness would you think? 1/2", 3/4"?

1/2" on the floor and 1" for the stringers. The stringers will need to be doubled up to 2" total. I think the Enforcer was 1.5" for the stringers, so yours should be the same or thicker.
