Headliner repair (Warranty Coverage Thread)

Daren,

For the record, I was willing to bring the boat to the factory for the repair from day 1.

Kip suggested waiting til after boating season. In the meantime he was looking for a dealer closer to me who could fix the boat!

Their mood has now changed and they feel they are not responsible at all.

you should check with the government or department of consumer affairs (or whatever you call in the states, you get the idea) and see what the statute law is regarding companies bought and sold and warranty liabilites that are duty bound to be performed. this wasn't a bankrupcy so i believe that warranty liabilities exist and need to be addressed. good luck

this is why doug is trying to get a strong dealer network. so probs like this can be fixed in there areas.

I have only heard good about them handling stuff I had a guy came in to see me bought a checkmate before i was a dealer and said that checkmate took care of a bunch of little stuff for him. boat was purchased before doug and fixed up when doug was there. matter of fact i think wildman sold the kid the boat here in ohio a little while back. know I get to do his service if he needs any. Having good dealers will only make things better.

that is different
the way it sounded before was that you wanted to wait

kip should stand by his word no matter who he works for. period

you hate to think that is comes to that

ask you interior guy about other options as to styles of headliner
such as paneling or plastic mirrors

glue, fabric and moisture are a bad combo.

Daren,

I am looking at a number of options. Thanks for the suggestions!

If I could find a very light weight panel, that might be the best option.

Joe

id think calling it in asap is correct, and you should be able to have the work done @ your convience ! my .02 as a consumer .

Why haven't we heard from the factory yet ?
And JW , my 1989 Senator has the original glued up headliner and it hasn't fallen down yet .

I've been to two dealers in New Jersey, one there would have been no way for them to fix it and the other possibly could have, but you would have had to talk to them.

BUT both of them could have loaded your boat on the truck for me to bring back to the factory. I was just there a couple of weeks ago, and will be there again before the end of the year most likely.

Where are you in NJ, because "Tri State" area doesn't tell me anything?

fixing your head liner

seamate ,,Thats a shame that they wont fix it I live In jersey and Iam willing to help you out I have restored a ,,83 convincor I custom made my whole interior the headliner was a bitch ,, but I can feel for ya!!!! I live in randolph you can email me at dtdjj@optonline.net I can fix it !!!!!

Coop,

I talked to Campisano Marine as per Kip's instruction. They could not repair it. They referred me to an upholstery shop who looked at the boat and said they would not tackle the job (Not enough room to work, Big job!).

If there was another dealer I should have talked to, then maybe someone from Checkmate should have let me know.

No offer was made to pick up my boat to return it to the factory.

The other dealer is a new one, they have two locations one in PA and the other in NJ, Checkmate sent me to the one in PA not knowing that I had to take the boat to the NJ location. So nothing could have really been set up on that trip.

Campisano is the dealer that I knew couldn't do the repair, but the other might be able to help. Its worth asking anyway.

They are Professional Boat Sales

Like I said, they may or may not be able to do the repair. But its worth asking, since I saw some repairs going on while I was there. Its not a one man show like Campisano's looked to be.

I got a letter from Doug Smith. I will print two quotes from Doug's letter.

"As you know the purchase of Checkmate Boats was an asset purchase and specifically did not assume any liability nor warranty issued by Checkmate Boats.".....

"We will, however be available to repair your boat as a courtesy and as a loyal Checkmate owner when you bring the boat to our factory."

First of all, Thanks to all the forum members for your support and advice.
Secondly, I am happy that my boat will be repaired finally.

Based on the letter, however, those of us who purchased boats from Checkmate Boats cannot automatically expect that Checkmate Marine will honor warranty claims!

I really am pleased with the styling and performance of my new Pulsare 2100, but I must say that I am a little nervous about a new performance boat without a warranty on the hull.

My plan for next spring is a Progression 22 / 300X.

Thanks Everyone!

Joe S.

Just for the record.....

I've been here @ Checkmate for 25 + years and i remember ( 1 ) hull we had to replace under warranty.

:bigthumb:What are you saying Kip everybody else will get the warranty shaft now that Doug Smith took over and changed the name. I do agree on Checkmate hulls being tough. It is rare to see one with stress cracks.

We all wan't to know the answer is their warranties or not. Simple yes or no will do

My guess is that the new Smith Checkmate will take care of the old customers who bought from the Combs Checkmate boats. Any little things like headliners (not downplaying that here), I would expect they would not hesitate to fix. I've already had Mike Combs send me parts for boats, even second hand, boats that I had, under warranty, no charge, and I don't even know if he even asked me a hull ID #. A seat pedestal on a Pusalre 4 years after I bought it new, and swim platform brackets for a 2001 Convincor of which I was the 3rd owner. And I bet that kind of attitude/customer service won't change much.

Big stuff might be another story I would suspect. Transom pulling out or a stringer come loose or something That would be hard to claim anyway. A boat isn't going to hold up fine for years and then suddenly have something like that happen. That stuff is hard to prove anyway and just rarely ever happens, especially to checkmates. Just my opinion, but boat warranties are really only good for small issues and parts replacements. Ever read that warranty real close, they don't cover very much.

That isn't the way I read the quotes from the letter, but I don't own a fairly new boat either, so I guess I'll shut up. Mine is waaaaaaay out of warranty (but structurally :bigthumb:)
